91 Firebird.

Ok the first two are basically how she sits right now. The v6 just had it. Wouldn't start anymore. It had gone through alot in the 2 yrs since i got it. Bought her Aug of 06. Was broken into the following spring. Including someone dumping a crap load of stuff down into the gas tank. Which had to be cleaned out. After that i found out that it had a bad lifter. Fixed that and then a brand new lifter went. She sat for awhile during winter, then I drove her for a couple months and one morning the damn thing wouldn't start. Now im going to be dropping in a 350 TBI from my 89 Blazer. This coming Feb. Hopefully by this summer i should have her screaming down the road again.

Re: 91 Firebird.

Thanks. Yeah i love this color. I see a few of em on this site but never seen em around here. I have to see how my rattle can paint is gonna come out. So far it looks good. Just putting a bunch of layers of clear on right now. Looks almost identical just looks alittle newer than the original paint.

yeah 91fireiroc,car looks to be in pretty good shape.
2 pieces of advice.
1.don't break those front fender gfx.
2.when you put the 350 tbi eng. in,you'll have to change your fuel pump. The v6 mpfi cars use the same f/p as a tpi car.Just a heads up in case you didn't know.

Re: 91 Firebird.

yeah i got the fender and gfx off right now. I think ill have to take a more recent pic tomorrow if the sun decides to show up. Yeah the side mirrors are the only place fading on the paint. The bumper is being repainted due to a break in. Interior is in MINT condition except for the driver seat. Normal wear on it. I mean its the original paint on the car from 91 so i didn't expect it to be as good as it is. Thanks for the compliments.

Re: 91 Firebird.

Did you want the v6 intake and Tb? Ive got em sitting in the garage right now. I can take pics of em this weekend and send em your way. The v6 has been pulled out for awhile now. Im just now looking at taking my Blazer 350 and 700r4 and dropping it in. Its running and driving 350 unlike the one i got in the garage. :P So if you want that i can get it to you.

Re: 91 Firebird.

Here some pictures from today. Slowly doing some work. Just found out after doing alittle in depth research about my car. It was in a pretty nasty accident a few years back from previous owner. Never was disclosed. Needless to say im questioning the auto-x idea now. Also checking out a second third gen. My buddy and i have been working on two different projects. This and an 89 k5 Blazer. We have to replace all of the floor just to get rid of the rust and also need to do some majoy exterior body work. He dropped the feared question. "Should we just drop the bird on the Blazer frame" :P. Its been an idea for awhile. Trust me i respect the birds for what they are. A SPORTS CAR. And i probably wouldnt go through with it untill we checked if the frame was straight....... Which it isnt. So its not a great car for Auto-x or even drag racing. The two things i wanted to do. So that takes me to the now feared conclusion. Do i drop the build off on someone else and let them deal with the frame and such or just have some fun with her and drop the bird on the Blazer frame and do it right. Unlike alot of the birds i have seen on stilts. We had planned on taking it as 4x4 and a second third gen to car shows. Yes it may seem a bit ******* but hell. This car does have alot of sentimental value.

Re: 91 Firebird.

Last two...... Also i just noticed. R3dn3ck is i guess a bad word :P Also If you guys have any advice about the car and how to save the body from a trash heap and without going 4x4. I mean the frame is alittle tweaked. Just a tiny bit but noticeable.

I believe it was an option through the factory on V6 cars. 91 and 92. Formula never had the option only GTA and Basic Firebird

So normal V6 Firebirds and GTA's had the option, but not Formulas and T/A's? I'm confused. lol

Re: 91 Firebird.

Yeah it was on the Base firebird models, v-6 or v-8, in 91 and 92. The Formula was not offered with the ground effects.
Mine was broken by the tow company. Has anyone seen these cars with the ground effect from the rear of the fender back and the formula nose without the ground effects in front of the fender? I have seen pictures and it looked pretty good, but what about in person? I have to do something, and if i can lose any weight off the front doing it, I would be happy. Spending $160 a piece is not an option!!! LOL

I know the Formula's were very basic looking.

Now I'm more confused. I though having a V8 instantly made the car a T/A?

Yeah don't really make sense. Mine was a formula that I converted to a base firebird, LOL. Base Firebirds did come with v-8's, acctully most of the base firebird were v-8's. Here I will add some more confusin to it, I just bought some firebird SSA fender emblems for my car....LOL

I am so effing lost. So how does the T/A differ from a normal Firebird if both have V8's? And how does a GTA differ? Apart from the hood, mine looks like any third gen with gfx.

Re: 91 Firebird.

Beautiful. I need those stock Trans Am rims. I bought mine with custom rims and didn't like them so I got rid of them and I could only find Firebird (plain stock) wheels. For the longest time I thought about ordering the Gold TA wheels but they are just so rare and expensive, and I'm not even sure I'm in love with thim so I came to the conclusion they weren't worth it.

First take a look at his spiler. Now take a look at mine...

His is a regular Firebird spoiler, while mine is the Trans Am wrap around. Another common difference is that a Trans Am has a hood with 2 front luvers, while a Firibird doesn't. I'm not sure a regular Firebird has Tuned Port Injection either. (It might only have Throttle Body.) Another possible difference is extra's/features. Most TAs are loaded with everything available that year. The only thing my Trans Am doesn't have is power seats and that light sensative automatic rear view mirror. (My Dad's '87 Z-28 had those. But I've not seen any other F-body besides his ever have that).

Re: 91 Firebird.

Yeah. It got confusing with the graphics on the cars and such. I know the suspension and what options available were different between the different classes of the car. I had those original rims but about 2 yrs ago i let a buddy take care of her while i was away. Then i find out he traded brand new tires with those original rims for the GTA rims. Yes i know they are GTA rims but i had just spent 500 bucks on new tires. The tires that were on the GTA rims were bare. So useless none the less. I thought about selling them but i would have to have a nice offer. Since i would not have rims for the bird anymore. Though, it wont be on the road for a long while. If you want the rims let me know and PM me an offer. I'll think about it. Cuz i do need money. I had just found an 89 with a 350 down the street from me. I'd like to purchase it but im alittle short on the money.

Re: 91 Firebird.

Your quite correct. The basic i believe only had the 305 TBI. Ive seen a couple around town and none had a TPI. Then the v6 had the MPFI. Mine is pretty basic. Nothing is electric WHICH i rather like. Im more of a clean basic fellow. Also you had posted just as i was posting the above post :P

So wait... T/A's had vents in the hood as well? I know my GTA has the GTA hood, which has four vents total. What does a normal T/A hood look like?

Re: 91 Firebird.

The early SE Firebirds had a hood similar to the 85-90 T/A hood except without the rear heat extractors.

So 4 Hoods: SE, Formula, T/A, base

In addition to the differences listed a few posts above, the T/As and GTAs had 4wdb and posi rear, better suspension, 140mph speedo, 8k tach, leather wrapped shifter, ebrake handle, and steering wheel. Also, starting in 1989, all Trans Ams got the 16x8 GTA wheels. Firebirds did not have this option.

Re: 91 Firebird.

The GFX were an option (RPO W68) on any non Formula Firebird. It is just an appearance package that the vast majority of 91-92 birds had. All it was was the GFX. Base birds still had the plain flat hood and the ugly little Mustang spoiler.

Trans Ams had TPI 305 or 350 (some exports had the 305 TBI)

Firebirds had either V6 or the 305 TBI

Formula had 305 TBI, 350 TPI, or 305 TPI

I guess I could call my 91 W68 Firebird a wanna be Trans Am too.....although I did swap in ALL of the WS6 suspension, gold wheels and 9 bolt from a GTA and I have a 350 now.

The GTA is basically a T/A with pretty badges. I can't think off hand of any options that the GTA had that you couldn't get on a regular T/A.

Re: 91 Firebird.

So how does WS6 differ from a normal Firebird's drivetrain and such?

And then what exactly is the GTA? Anything different?

WS6 is the RPO code for a suspension package that was available on Formulas, Trans Ams, and GTA's. It's basically bigger sway bars, stiffer springs, and usually included rear disk brakes, although I think that with the advent of the WS7 package the rear disks picked up the J65 RPO. It has nothing to do with the drive train.

The GTA is basically a Trans Am with fancy badges and a higher price tag.

Re: 91 Firebird.

Drivetrain was the wrong word. I know it's suspension. lol. So if I get a set of new springs and shocks for a normal 305 Firebird, they'll work on my GTA?

And I know about the rare rear drums on the WS6... cause i have them.

Re: 91 Firebird.

Been working on the engine bay slowly. Been sanding and smoothing out all the edges in the bay. I'm trying to go for a nice clean look to the engine bay. I want to have it bare. Nothing extra except whats needed to run the engine. I like keeping things to a minimum. If anyone could post up some good clean engine bays i would appreciate it. Need some ideas.

Re: 91 Firebird.

Thanks for the kind words guys! I bought the car about 4 years ago, specifically with the intent of doing the swap. That is the reason for the hardtop (hopefully more rigidity given the unibody design) and rear posi w/discs.

My latest problem is I can't find the friggin wire for the speedo. I know it's green with a black stripe (or black with a green stripe - I've got it written down somewhere). I put a full Casper's custom harness in it, so I have the speedo signal wire labeled from the ecm, but can't find the wire in the dash. I have been fishing around underneath the dash to no avail. I haven't pulled out the instrument cluster yet, which I was trying to avoid if possible.

Those guys over on Thirdgen.org are a bit silly when it comes to swapping out the beloved small block. However, I myself haven't yet noticed any adverse side effects since pulling out the 350 in favor of the LC2. More power, cool whistle sound, lot of people scratching their heads wondering what in the heck is under the hood. One guy at the parts store heard me start it up, and said to his buddy "that thing has a miss." I guess it does, if you count the two cylinders it's missing.

wrong section for this, but check the electronics section, also to help you out you simply need to put the correct resistor inline of your vats wires under the column. do a search for vats resistors, or vats bypass and youll find everything you need to know.
