How many different style tail lights did firebirds come out with for these birds? I know I've seen at least three or possibly four different styles?

Show me all the different styles, show me your tails! I'm contemplating changing what I have...

 

here is what my tail lights look like, as far as I know they're the stock lights for a '91 GTA;

 

I believe 4 or 5 difderent types. Yours is tbe most sought out after though. Its hard to find & if they are in good condition they are expensive. Also they tend to delaminate over time from what ive read.

 

interesting, thanks for the info... my lights seem to be pretty minty however from what I recall I seem to like the tails with the bird emblem in the middle.

 

Oh yeah. They definitely tend to delaminate. My driver side taillight decided to start delaminating at the end of last summer.

And Brisk, if you don't want your 91 GTA tails, let me know. I'll be willing to take them off your hands.

82-84 Firebird's had 1 Style Base birds (including 85) got them in red, S/E's & T/A's had the same lights, only Smoked.

85-90 Trans Am's & GTA's has a Checkerboard Design, also tinted (My personal favorite)

86-92 Firebird's and Formula's had another style

91-92 Trans am's & GTA's have ones like yours.

 

There are only two areas where I'd disagree with what you wrote. I would say that the 82-85 base firebird lights that were red with a clear rectangular section for the reverse lights should be considered a different tail light assembly than the 82-84 T/A tail lights that are tinted/smoked over the entire assembly including the reverse lights. Also, the 85-90 T/A checkerboard design tail lights weren't actually tinted. The black checkerboard design makes them appear tinted from a distance, but the spaces in between are actually pretty clear.

Base FIREBIRD
1982 - 1985 Ribbed no blackout
1986 - 1990 Firebird Tailight, soothe, (Yellow Emblem in center section)
1991 - 1992 Same as 86-90 but Red Emblem in center section

Formula is same as Firebird from 1987 - 1992

S/E & Trans Am
1982 - 1984 Ribbed Blackout "Trans Am" type lens
S/E 1985 - 1986 Trans Am Smooth Grid taillight
T/A 1985 - 1990 Trans Am Smoothe Grid tailight (several center section color birds tho, Seen Blue, Red, White, Gold, Silver) (Also GTA 87-90, only Gold Birds tho in center section IIRC)
1989 Trans AM TURBO, same as 85-90 TA, but unique center section
GTA & T/A 1991 - 1992 Only 2 piece rear tail light assemblies.

 

Great info in this thread, I went through all of these when I went to replace my 85 trans am tails due to severe delamination and cracking. Wound up replacing them as originals but with a silver bird insert for the center section. That bird does vary alot as mentioned above, and do note for those interested in jumping year styles... The 82 to 84 ribbed tails took a FLAT center bird insert, while the newer years had a curved emblem. Sucks if you wanted one of the two blue emblems made, one is black and blue, the other is white and blue, both are flat *sniffle*... Also, be sure to remember the 84 trans am anniversary tails, ribbed with white lines across...this is where you find said white and blue bird.
