1992 firebird build
I am going to start re-beautifying my 1992 firebird. It is a jamaica yellow v6 with light beige interior and t-tops . The interior is starting to look pretty ratty, mainly due to previous owners. The carpet is bunched in spots and worn down to the jute in other spots. The top of the center console is cracked. I will take pictures soon showing everything. You guy probably understand the 20+ years of wear.
I have a set of black/gray tiburon seats that I am going to install. They are are comfortable, yet supportive. The fronts should fit perfectly, after I fabricate brackets for them. I think I may have an idea to install the rear seats as well, we'll see. I might even end up with some storage under the rear seats.
These are tiburon seats (not my picture):
I want to go to a black and gray interior scheme. I like the clean look of an all black interior, but I want a modified stock look. I'm thinking black carpet, panels, plastics, and headliner; with gray inserts in the panels and appropriate plastics. Maybe gray consoles (upper and lower); Darker gray, like in the seats. I might make a leather shift boot with gray stitching, to tie it together.
Eventually I would like to do a gunmetal paint job, but probably not this year; maybe in the spring.
To do list:
*hood latch cable
*SIR light
*pass blinker
*headlight bushings
*rear latch problems(either plastic gear or the mount)
*get pass window to work correctly (track adjustment )
*install decent interior
*install newer door and hatch weather strip
*fix t top leak.
*get some real t-tops (glass)
*Properly install the amp that previous owner had in the car. It has shoestring thin + wire with no safety fuse and a large ground that is not installed in the amp. I wondered how the battery was going dead.
*fix holey battery tray ( I installed a deka sealed battery so it doesnt get worse). Deka (east penn ) is made here in PA.
*general tune up before back to college.
Looks like there is a junkyard trip in my near future.
The theme of this build is going to be budget, yet not half-a**. As such, I am going to incorporate a lot of junkyard and craigslist into the build.
I'll get some pictures up.
I'll also try to take pictures of the upgrades as I do them.
Thanks for reading this long post to the end.

Re: 1992 firebird build
I went to 2 different junkyards today, everything was picked over. I did manage to find a hood release cable. I also found some black carpet that I might go back for if I can't find anything better somewhere else. Does anyone know of a decent junkyard in western pa ?

Re: 1992 firebird build
I worked on the hatch motor area today; I noticed that the gear nut is indeed faulty. It has 3-4 teeth missing in a single spot. I think I read somewhere that this would be from someone slamming the trunk like regular latch kind. I also forgot to reattach the release cable so I successfully locked myself out of the hatch. . I'm gonna have to shimmy in there to remedy that problem; should be fun. .
I also noticed that the fog lights no longer work, which adds to the to do before inspection list. Oddly enough, the sealed beams have moisture inside of them, guess it's time to replace them. The headliner is officially sagging now too, I am going to try to salvage the headliner; I may fiberglass the back side of it and redo the fabric. Although, it really would not bother me to go liner-less for a while.
I took a few pictures which I will soon post. I have to host them on flickr.
I will try to document the fixes; either in video format or with pictures.

Not sure if I am going to hammer out this fender or just get one in better shape. It's a smooth dent, albeit large, so it should hammer out well.

There is moisture in the sealed beam light, apparently they are no longer "sealed".

Dirty engine bay, what 20 year old car doesn't have one though.

Half the speaker box, the afforementioned amp with shoestring power and NO GROUND WIRE ! I wonder how they didn't cause a car fire with the crappy wiring; it definitely drained the battery well.

The hatch motor assembly. I would reccomend tracing an outline as seen; otherwise, the latch may not be in the same spot upon reassembly.

A good conditon dash pad, only problem is the corner; it's a real eyesore though. I'll figure out something to do with it.

Re: 1992 firebird build
I ordered the headlight bushings and hatch gear nut from TDS. Should be here monday. I just have to get some gasket paper and some white lithium grease and I'll be ready to remedy the two more annoying problems.
I did get the hatch cable reattached yesterday.

Re: 1992 firebird build
Lost steam with everything this car needs; given the 20 year old rust and everything. I am probably going to sell it. I found an 05 monte for 2500. Its a shame but I don't have the time the car needs.

Re: 1992 firebird build
It's alright. I should have looked over it more thoroughly before buying it. I never thought to check for all the little problems that a 20 y/p car would have. On the bright side, I did get the 05 monte. It only had 2 prev owners, except the last one decided to smoke in it. I did manage to fix some of the problems before gettign the monte. I fixed the headlights, the tops, have a replacement hood cable and new gear nut.
The monte also already has the interior color scheme that I was planning for the 'bird, the tiburon seats should look pretty stock in it, and the rears look like they can be made to fit.
