Local Maryland's, Emissions help needed! :)

yup thats right my car sucked with hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, hey but i did pass the fuel cap pressure test

State standards:

Hydrocarbons 220 PPM
Carbon Monoxide 1.20 PCT

My test:

398 PPM
1.36 PCT

slp 1 3/4 headers non air, no smog pump, no cats, slp catback, i turned my fans off and was running 220 temp at least when being tested.

maybe having cats right now would be a good thing, any cheap methods to get me to pass?

thanks for your help.

Do you have dual cats or single cat? I'm pretty sure cat(s) would pass.

yeah dual cats have been deleted with pipes, but i guess i have no choice, i should of just stayed home and lowered the front end alittle more, but i still would like to pass emissions, i didnt know my numbers would be this bad.

anyone have any numbers like mine and then put a cat(s) on or did something else and then pass? thx

Count me as somebody who had very high HC and then installed cats (dual cats) and watched those counts drop dramatically.

HC limit = 220ppm

BEFORE Cats: 871ppm
AFTER Cats: 310ppm

This was with the MiniRam, no EGR, no AIR, and a 230/245 cam.

The only way I was able to pass was to force open loop and run really really lean. I ended up passing with 17ppm ... that wasn't a typo. It was 17ppm. But that was very very dangerous because the car was running crazy lean.

Cats make a huge difference. If you put cats on then you will pass the HCs.

I remember that my CO dropped too. I just don't have those numbers in my memory (getting old - lol).

so 2 way cats with the air pipe fitting will work then?

i think not having these cats is causing me to run ruch also, i lost about 30 miles to a tank now, i wonder since my erg is broke it migh be causing a problem also, to many things are going wrong and my emission numbers show it.

plus i let my engine run hot like over 220 or so and the damn car was almost stalling in the lanes waiting for testing.

darn Maryland for having emissions, why cant we just donate 20 bucks a year to the wildlife fund

I failed emissions twice and replaced:

- Cats
- Spark plugs
- Spark plug wires
- Coil
- Distributor cap and rotor
- PCV valve

And STILL failed. Too much HC. However, the guy at the testing station said that if I did all the work myself, it's worth $175 toward the $450 waiver fee.

Pat, who is really close to "selling" my Firebird to my dad in emissions-free Nebraska

do you think an oxygen sensor might help emissions? if it is worn out it can make your car run rich, I think

I am brining this back.

why didnt they test for NOx ?

they tested for CO2 6.0 PCT State Standard
13.13 PCT results

things i plan to replace.

egr crap, two cats 2 way. i cant really add air tubes in anymore.

fuel vapor canister might help, and air filter.

if you are not on the roller they have you tach the motor upt to about 2k-2.5k. I got a waiver last time i was therre because i had a low profile tire on the front (flat) and they told me i could not go in to the bay because of the 4x4 "hump" would make my radiator air dam scrape. they will not allow a car in to the bay and have them back out when you are done. so if the bottom will scrape they will give a pass. little hint .. 2 years and running.....

just want to say i tired it again and did nothing but take off my air box and unhooked the battery for a few seconds, passed the test this time.

they said my car is in the computer now as "idle only" and the person last time should of never had it on the roller to begin with.

anyway my carbon went down quite a but and my hydrocarbons barely passed

what a good friday the 13th.

Hmm, guess I will give it ANOTHER swing. (This car has NOT passed the entire time I have owned it, about 4 years now. I just get -pounded- in fines every so often. )

if ur too low then they will do the "idle test" still.

which means they dont put u on the roller u just drive over it some and then they hook u up to the smog things on the tail pipes and just test for like 2 minutes or so. i kept the idle up some.

i just put in a full tank of 93, got it to around 220 degrees, reset the computer, and pulled the air intake going to my air filter

it worked, i went to the one up in Glen Burnie.
