Historic Tags in MD

Since there’s a couple of threads here, all with all sorts of info, none of which is entirely correct, I’m starting a new thread.

As of right now, in MD, you can fill out the correct form HERE IS A LINK, walk into ANY full service MVA station with $51 (before this month it only worked at the Glen Bernie one) and register your >=20y/o car as “historic”

And if you just bought the thing you do not have to get it inspected to get the tags.

I just did it Friday with an ’87 TA that I bought.

October/OC show???

The law was changed right at the end of last summer, I think it was as of September, but officially (according to the MVA) you couldn’t do it anywhere but the glen bernie MVA (sort of their capitol if you will) and the new form didn’t exist till this year.

I've got a few questions as I am entertaining the idea of moving back to Maryland for the first time since I left in 1994.

1) By current rules, does this include heavily modified cars being registered as "Historic?" My '90 has zero emissions so this goes a long way of me making an informed decision. (I realize that I would have to wait until 2010 with my '90)

2) Does it truly exempt both emissions and safety/visual inspections?

3) Having read the previous thread, too, does it still rely the Camaro not being made for the 20 year rule to count, or is that all "out the window" now?

Thanks.

Yeah i did mine for the Oct. show and it was with the old form and at the Annapolis MVA like i said. There was a thing on the form that I filled out about having paper work and making sure the car was not modified, they didnt even ask they just gave me my tags. My car has no emissions stuff either so dont worry abuot that, cause no emissions required. I thoguht that the law didnt change till Jan. 2007. Either way its great news for 20 year old cars now.

Did you read the form that I linked to?

2) Does it truly exempt both emissions and safety/visual inspections?
It does exempt you from emissions testing and the visual inspection as far as the state is concerned. The actual emissions regs are federal and clearly state that it’s illegal to decertify a car that originally came with emissions controls, irrespective of what the state you live in does, and does set some fairly stringent fines/punishments for it.

Read that any way you like, technically it means that registering the car as historic in MD is the same as registering it in a state that does not do emissions testing. I don’t know of any reason why in either case you couldn’t get pulled over and car impounded for removing emissions devices even if you don’t have to pass an emissions test.

3) Having read the previous thread, too, does it still rely the Camaro not being made for the 20 year rule to count, or is that all "out the window" now?
Again, did you read the form that I linked??? It’s pretty clear.

Yeah, would love to have read it, but I am at work and cannot open pdf's here. I'll get home in about an 1 1/2 hours and read the form then.

As of 1/1/2007

New member here - so be nice

But that is what I heard when I called Glen Burnie on 1/2/2007. At least recently and prior to 2007, you could obtain historic tags if your car was 20-24 years old and no longer manufactrued (Camaros ceased in 2002?). As of 1/1/2007 the rule is 20 years and older.

I am looking into removing my Cat Conv from my 4bbl Z.

Yes but now it is more clear, and new members and old will not have to search half way through another thread to get an answer.

He he, woops… I gave up reading both old threads… not very patient sometimes… sorry. I figured that eventually they’d get there but for the ADD out there I’d put it in here right at the top where any moron can find it.

For everyone else… to give credit where credit is due, I showed up to buy Rob’s car and he already had the form printed out for me and everything… I just put my name on it, my name on the title, walked into the MVA, stared at the flaming morons in disbelief for about a half hour till my number came up they handed me historic tags and that was it.

After that I went looking on their online forms site since obviously they’d updated since the last time I checked and decided to post this since I get probably half a dozen people asking me about this BS at the shop each week…

No glory hogging, just like stevo said, wanted to make a few people’s lives easier…

As for the other questions… the way the new rules are done, doesn’t matter if it’s in production or not, 20 years for everything… READ the form/link in my original post.
----------
Anyway, like I kind of hinted at earlier, this is kind of old news, one of the guys at the shop has had his ’87 Monti SS registered as historic since like October I think it was, it’s just news that it’s that easy and the the form is online as of this month.

Yep, the one off Clopper. The people who work there are great - if you are decent to them, they go out of their way to help you out. Not like most of the Montgomery or Maryland state government facilities. I got four sets of tags when I was there Friday afternoon -- the first two sets were for me and took about 10 minutes from walking in the door, through the two lines - then it got crowded and it took me another hour or so to get historic tags for a '78 Fire & Rescue truck my boss just bought (what for, don't ask me) and an '05 Dodge Power Wagon. I'd suggest the Gaithersburg MVA over any other one in Maryland.

MVA express is only driver's license services and tag returns, unless they've changed.

Got my Historic Tags for my convertible last Thursday. Transfered my personal plates to Historic Status! Only took 10 Minutes in Frederick.

Keep a look out for 1BADZ4U, well, when the weather is right .
