Just rebuilt my first T56..
Just finished my T56 rebuild, with carbon fiber blocker rings, billet synchro keys, steel 3/4 fork, bronze fork pads, and all new Timken bearings.

I also rebuilt the second spare I had, with all stock parts. I'll probably put an ad for it in the For Sale section in a few weeks.
Did alot of reading/prep-work on the rebuild, seems pretty straightforward, just takes patience and care..
I'll be swapping in the rebuilt T56 for my current one (whining 3&4 gears), shortly.

Re: Just rebuilt my first T56..
I don' t know about a good investment
I have close to $2K in just parts, into the 2 trannys now. Still way cheaper than a D&D viper retro though..
I will be selling the 2nd trans, but not for what I paid you for it...
(But luckily it's in ALOT better shape now... ;-) )

I'm about to take on the same project in a week or 2. I figure I'll tear it down and make sure I dont need anything besides the things you listed (I have the same list of upgrade parts you put in yours) and I'll place my order for the parts all in one shot.
Who did you get the parts from? Anyone local or mail order?

Parts ordered from http://www.thegearbox.org
I used the Tremec T56 service manual, along with 2 web articles that filled in most of the other gaps:

Re: Just rebuilt my first T56..
Sorry, I left the slushboxes to the pros.. I never got into the 700r4 or had opportunity to open up a TH350 or 400..
The ground effects had some hidden body work under the paint, so I had to put them aside until Spring.

Good deal.. Another Mag article with some slightly different views:
http://www.highperformancepontiac.co...ion/index.html
Where are you taking your trans apart? I'm not sure if I'm close or will have time to help, but give a shout if you run into anything strange. (and I already have all the "special" tools made up to do the rebuild..)

Re: Just rebuilt my first T56..
I just put the rebuilt trans in this past weekend and it drives very nice. I found out the T56 I was running, was rebuilt very badly, and accounts for all my symptoms too.. (Whining 4th gear, lugging in 5th and 6th, etc.)
I've got 4 T56 rebuilds under my belt, and I've been asked to rebuilt T5s (Mustang) too. All good stuff..

Re: Just rebuilt my first T56..
Mike,
The 700R4 I just rebuilt was the one I got from you.
It had a bad Reaction gear to case bearing. Its the the very last bearing all the way in the back.
It broke and went through about everything else.
It was rebuilt recently though. All the clutches were brand new.
No clearence issues at all.
Wanna help me rebuild the T56 in my 99? lol.
Just some bad syncros.

Not a problem with doing your T56 rebuild.. Just let me know.. I have my orig torn down completely, just waiting on the bank-account to get a little fatter before rebuilding it as a 600hp spare. If you have the T56 out of the car, and the parts kit, we could rebuild it in one day.

Re: Just rebuilt my first T56..
The only tools I bought was Craftsman snap ring pliers.
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...rd=ring+pliers
Everything else was standard. A nice long flathead came in real handy too to get the other direction snap rings out.
If you really want to take it 100% apart you will need some type of press but to replace all the clutch bands and bearings you dont need it.
My best friend was a Haynes GM Automatic book.
When you take it apart just keep the clutch bands in order.

Just added a T5 to my belt:
http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~davis/z28...web/index.html
These are Mustang WC's, but basically the same as the Fbody's..
You got me motivated, I think I might take a crack at a 700r4..
