gps for speedometer and odometer?

Has anyone ever used a GPS for the odometer and speedometer?

My dash in the one car doesn't work at all.
I was thinking of using a gps but I wasn't sure if they would work for the odometer with out resting (each trip)

I was also concerned about the size of the font on the speed on the screen.

Any suggestions on which GPS would be able to work for me?

FYI: That's not legal, at least for an odometer. I would think for the speedo as well, but I'm not 100% on that one.

Re: gps for speedometer and odometer?

I don't think it matters if my supercharged 1976 motor matches miles on the dash of my 82's unknown mileage body.

I just need to know my speed and how many miles till I need to change my oil.
(I need a gps for work anyway so 2 bird one stone...)
Anyone got any useful GPS system info ?

Re: gps for speedometer and odometer?

My GPS reads my speed, but i have noticed that it is not in par with my speedometer, close though. It could possibly work as a quick fix, but I'd definately advise you to get your speedometer and rpm guages working correctly before you get used to looking at the GPS for the info that youre guages should be displaying to you. As far as RPMs go, i have yet to see a GPS read as far into it as RPMs, but it could happen.

Re: gps for speedometer and odometer?

Does your gps record the miles traveled over time (aka months)?
How fast is the refresh rate on your gps?
My RPMs read fine its the speedo that isn't attached (broken missing parts, cable, gear in trany, etc)

Re: gps for speedometer and odometer?

no my gps does not record miles traveled, at least i dont think it does. i do know that it records driving time though. the refresh rate on my gps is pretty good, it either refreshes every turn when i am using it as a gps, or its at a constant refresh state if i am just driving around with it on. hope that helped.
