need motor to get my baby running again (sniff-sniff)

Yes this is a sob story but everyone that reads my posts knows I am full of them! I have a cracked block in my tpi 350 iroc and would really like a cheap motor to throw in like real cheap! I cant aford to buy another car so i definatly can not afford to spend more than 150 or 200 but I will give you my old motor if you want it 4 a core or some thing the only thing i ask is that it is the whole motor exept intake-up and running no knocks I dont mind some blow-by Or high milage just 87 or up with L-98 heads. Please Please Please I dont need performance I just miss my car

my friend is always selling 350s on ebay, but i doubt he has any ones with L98 heads, what's wrong with yours? as of a couple months ago he had a few 87 newer blocks around, some rebuilt, and some not, I'll give him a call later today and see what he has

i will look at the shop tomorrow and see if we have any 350's laying around. the problem is that engine blocks go extremly fast this time of the year

unless you know someone, expect to wait a around 2 weeks to just get the maching work done at a maching shop, its a mad rush to get engines built this time of year

Yea it does seem to be a rough time of year for motors. But I guess its ok cause I still need to line up a garage to do the swap in.

You know I'd offer to do the swap in my garage if I didn't have this 406 thing going on.

Of course it's still a possibility after I get all the engine swap etc..done on mine. But it wouldn't be till like April-May till I'd have space. My engine won't be ready till end of Feb. Then I have to drive down and watch it get dynoed and haul it back here in the S-10.

It'll be neat to find out if we really get close to 500 HP like Gustaf claims....

Yea 500hp will be great I would still expect to see more torque than he is quoting but who knows and as far as motor swapping my swap will probably happen untill closer to summer any way cause now my girls stupid import has taken importance o-well things happen for a reason maybe a motor will fall on my lap and I wont have to worry about all the money involved wouldnt that be great? I gues it might hurt a bit though---- nah it would be worth it!!!!!!

just talked to my buddy, he sold all of his '87 and newer blocks, he has and older style engine for sale, runs, not sure of miles, but probably high, he'd take 175 minus heads and intake, those would be more.

let me know if anyone is interested

Vic

Whats wrong with your heads?

You said your block cracked, so why cant you use an older short block and just bolt on your heads?

I thought at 350 TPI was just a hydralic cam, not a roller

Excuse my lack of knowledge.....but what sensors cant you use on an older block that you can on a newer one?

My understanding is that the only differences are the rear main seal and cam type. Which shouldnt make any difference. People put 406's under their TPI and there are NO 400 roller blocks from the factory.

Fill me in someone, what am I missing??

I think I know what SweetS10v8 is getting at.

The location for the knock sensor is the same on older blocks too, so that's not the issue. I have a knock sensor on my '83 L69, and it's a non-roller two piece seal block.

Yes you would have to run a hyd. tappet cam though, and I assume you'd need the rockers, lifters and pushrods from the older engine. And maybe a different cam to match the RPM range of a TPI motor...

OR - I'll probably be selling my completely rebuilt (under 10,000 mi.) L69 with a Weiand action plus intake, Crane cam, distributor, and rebuilt E4ME with B hangers and DR rods installed already!!

Maybe you guys are right maybe I am wrong but peterson performance told me that the tuned port will only function properly with the roller cam. I dont know too much about motor builing so I leave it to the pros but you could be correct he also said that the head bolt angles would be different and the L98 heads would not work on an earlier block unless I converted over to an 85-86 TPI setup of course he is also the same guy that tryed to sell me on the idea of destroking so who knows so I am confuzed I dont know what I am doing! I wish that I just had the money for my ZZ4 and stealth ram and vortech supercharger.PLEASE LET $10,500 fall on my lap soon!!!!!!

so I am confuzed I dont know what I am doing!
Where do you think I got my screen name?? lol

AFAIK, No blocks were drilled from the factory for angled head bolts. L98 heads are pretty much the same. Vortec heads however, require a different intake....due to different angle/bolt pattern....but I think the head bolt pattern is the same on those too.

Roller cams are better, or can be better because you can open the valves on a shorter duration, and of course they have less friction. The same "ramp" on a hyd. cam would be too steep and cause the lifter to dig into the cam lobe.

But the stock TPI cam isn't really that radical. I'd think you could get a hyd. cam that pretty closely matches what the roller TPI cam gives you. And destroking an engine will never make sense to me unless you're running in a class that is CID limited.

EDIT: Please don't take anything said above as fact, because as I said earlier - I'm no expert on TPI's. Experts feel free to correct me if I'm wrong...

just for the hell of it...

Umm...I've got a 305(yeaaah, i knoooow!) TPI I'm asking 700.00 for. It's originally from an 86 Z28 and has 54,000 miles on it.
Let me know if you'd suck up your gut for a 305(hehe!)
