Car Legality (Chicago Guys)

Ok I "MIGHT" be moving back to Chicago(god hoping) this fall and plan to bring this next spring.

To prevent any harassment from Chicago's finest ,What will I need to change aside from the tint ?? It has no catalytic converter and its a 1982 trans am.

What are the rules with safety,Smog ?? Can I do AV plates on it since I have collectors insurance on it ??

I don't want to hear negative BS about what it is.Just looking for a straight answer thanks

Dave

Re: Car Legality (Chicago Guys)

You'll need to pass a idle smog test once, after that you should be good. IL recently stopped doing the IL240 dyno roller test. So all pre OBD2 cars just need to pass the sniffer at idle, and then they are good forever.

No emissions test is required for '95 and older. A buddy of mine bought a 89 Iroc from Nevada early this year and does not need tested.

I was told they have to pass the sniffer once at idle, and then they are home free.

Haha I just recently moved out to OKC from Chicago. I hear You about hopefully being able to move back. So I'm subscribing to Your thread because my cats and smog equipment have been removed. I would hate to have to convert back to stock!

Sorry to hear your in OKC now,Get ready for a many bad surprises in the OKC metro. This state is so behind its not even funny

Here in Oklahoma we don't have safety and or smog inspections.

But I hear if we have more smog days they might bring back smog checks.

Re: Car Legality (Chicago Guys)

You will have to put a front license plate on it. Window tint, its illegal on the front side, but you could probably drive around for years and never get pulled over for it.Its hit or miss.

Re: Car Legality (Chicago Guys)

I know people who have driven around for years without a front plate! Leave it off, you'll likely not encounter any issues with it because of the nostalgia associated with Knight Rider.

Not to say you can't get ticked for it, but you should be fine. When I finally get my car painted and the front bumper cover replaced I will not be putting a plate on it.

Thnx man

Crap I forgot about that stupid front plate.I have seen people put there plates in dash in front of the windshield if they have no mount in the front bumper as in my car.But ya I hope not to get harassed because of Knight Rider,But again I have to live in Chicago(School/Work) you guys know how those CPD cops can be

Ill probably have to worry more about getting pulled over so they can "check" out the car.

The tint well I got pulled over in Niles in my other car last year with tint all around it had Oklahoma plates and it was legal for Oklahoma. But the cop was cool so I didn't give her any heat.

Re: Car Legality (Chicago Guys)

He'll be okay. I see plenty of Vette, bird, camaro guys who don't run front plates because there really isn't a place to put them on.

Can still get a ticket though if you get a jerk of a cop. You are more likely to get in trouble for the tinted windows though.

Re: Car Legality (Chicago Guys)

first off NICE CAR!!! i just recently purchased an 89 GTA and took it to my DMV in downstate IL and all i did was fill out an application for title that cost $65 and paid like $78 for registration which they handed me the plates right then and there. i dind't have to pass ANY test or anything. walk in, pay the money walk out with plates and my title showed up about 5 weeks later.

as far as the front plate, i wouldn't worry about it. i haven't run one on my car and refuse to put one one. i think it totally takes away from the looks.

for your tint, i woulnd't worry about that either. i would assume you only drive your awesome car only in nice wheather which would probably mean your windows are down anyway.

let's also face the facts too. your car is kick *** and by legalizing everything then your car would no longer look like a replica. it would look like every other '82 bird out there. if you're just out on evening/weekend cruises the only reason you'll be getting pulled over is so the cops can check it out. although if you run around with your red lights on then i'm sure you'll get pulled over and probably ticketed.

did you pick up your red lights from http://www.knightlight.co.uk/index.asp ? i too love knight rider and had to put a set of those lights on my computer. see below

http://www.dorkfest.com/jesus/downloads/box.MPG

i tried to embed it but it wouldn't work, so you need to click the link.

if you EVER want to sell your car Dave, please let me know! btw, you got the inside done too?

Thnx Matt for the props that's a BADa$$ GTA you got there,Looks pretty clean for a Midwest car, LOL

On the plates and registration,I shouldn't have A problem with that. But its the unwanted "attention" that I'm worried about.Chicago and Normal are very different,I'll just take the front tint off and and take my chances in Chicago hopefully I won't get harassed to much and cause I know it will happen.

Nah,I'm not dumb to run my scanner on the road that's a big NO NO

Sorry bro I have had this ride since High school when it was black and gold and only had 61K miles on it and hope to have it until,I'm old and gray,My interior needs recover,But I have a parts car with a mint '82 interior and a buddy in TN has a kitt 2 TV dash waiting for me to put in. .I should be done with it this time next year depends on the job I get and how much it pays.LOL

Thnx,

Dave

Re: Car Legality (Chicago Guys)

thanks dude! if it were me though i wouldn't pull the tint until you had to. most likely, even if you did get ticketed for your tint, as long as you pull it off and proove it then they will drop the ticket. i'd take my chances as long as i could. you never know....

Re: Car Legality (Chicago Guys)

For Illinois, it is illeagal to not have a front license plate, to have any license plate covers, to have tint on drivers front windows, illegal not to have emissions equipment. That being said, leave your car the way it is.

I have not had a front license plate for 3 years now, never been pulled over. Had tint for 6 years and never been pulled over. No emissions for 6 years and never been pulled over. Only thing about emissions is the exhaust shops in IL are not supposed to touch a car if it doesn't have a a cat. There are a few shops who will do exhaust work on cars without cats though.

Basically police in Illinois will only pull you over for small stuff (light out, tint etc.) if they think you are "up to no good" or "driving suspicously" (drunk driving). that is why when you watch Illinois news you always hear so and so was pulled over for tint and the police found 50 dime bags. Or pulled over for a light out and found to be drunk driving. Police use it as an excuse if the have a hunch you are doing something. Do not give them an excuse to pull you over and you will be fine. I forgot to put my current registration sticker on for 8 months before they pulled me over to remind me about it.

Even if you do get a ticket for tint all you have to do is take it off and show the courts that it is off and they will drop it. Then put it back on. I had a friend who did this several times.

Being in larger cities also gives you the benefit of being less likly to get pulled over. Smaller towns have much lower poverty rates and therefore everybody's is likly to be newer, in good condition and 100% legal. Larger cities have more people driving more cars that should be in the junkyard.

I have several friends who work in law enforcement who have told me this. Unless you have been driving like a jerk or have been rude they will send you on your way or at most give you a warning. I was pulled over for a tail light bulb being out once. Officer just wanted to make sure the car was not stolen and I was not drunk driving. I asked If he could write me up a warning so I f I got pulled over again on the way home I would not get a ticket. The officer looked at me strangly and just said "No one is ging to give you a ticket for that!"

Hmm...... all good points

It will just be a special occasion/weekend car thus lower my odds of getting pulled over for bs

Sorry to sound so paranoid,But you guys know how Northern Illinois LEO's are sometimes.

I would get a beater car for the winter (if you can)they tend to use 4 inchs of salt for every 1 inch of snow around here, making it a one big slush mess. Its hard to find a clean thirdgen around here other than the ones stored winters, and people generally drive like idiot's in Chicago FYI.

Re: Car Legality (Chicago Guys)

My 86 has tint and I get pulled over or get "extra" tixs for that one. I had the tint shop write me a removal reciept and took it to court, beat the case and kept the tint off, but it is a hassel and I think tint on the front will get you pulled over for sure.

On my 92 I have no tint and no front plate. The only time I got a ticket was in DuPage county which seems to be full of jerk cops and that was on the College of DuPage campus and the cop had nothing to do. Only other time I got stopped was in Iowa and he said he was enforcing the Illinois law and wrote me a warning ticket. Why did he even care. State trooper going above and beyond. I will never put the front plate on. I have never seen a 'vette with one around here.

Sweet car...Welcome back
