Post your winter beaters!

I'm sure a lot of us midwesterner's don't want to take our third gen's out in the yucky stuff outside in the winter - so i figured this'd be a neat thread.

If you have a winter beater(s) or any other car you drive aside from your third gen post it up!

I actually have two myself - one being my primary toy actually over my thirdgen - but just because AWD can be really fun it sees the winter roads now and then :P

1st up:
My 1992 Plymouth Laser 1.8L 5spd FWD - around 60whp!! Hell yeah - is a e-brake sliden champ :P

And my other baby:
1992 Eagle Talon TSi AWD 5spd - has a hefty amount of mods, if you actually want to know them let me know and I'll put them up but here she is:

Re: Post your winter beaters!

Have a 03' chevy tracker. It has a 2.5 v6 with auto 4x4. Pretty much beat the snot out of it. Served as a hunting vehlical through the woods, often iced fished out the back of it, and hauled livestock feed in it often. I even managed to break the track bar that connects from the axle to frame. So much load bent it untill it snapped. Smashed fender into side of tree. The valvetrain is rattling something fierce and engine is missing (think it needs new plugs and plug wires.) It's got me through a lot and plan to keep running it.
Don't really have any pics of it sorry

Re: Post your winter beaters!

Well, I'm not driving the 'Bird in the snow, but I don't have a beater of my own yet. I'm just having my mom or dad drive me to school like they did before I got my own car anyways. I also get to use their cars whenever I need them if one is available, they are a black 2001 Impala LS (3.8L v6). I really love this car to be honest, we've never had a problem with it yet, and its got some really good get up and go. Then my mom's car is a silver Cobalt, pretty much totally base, no power windows, locks or anything.

I'm looking for a 4x4 Ram, Ramcharger, K5 Blazer, or something similar for myself as a winter beater/utility vehicle, but since its not necessary yet I am keeping my search narrow to one of those, which I would love. If I actually needed a winter car, hell I'd drive a civic if it meant keeping my car nice. Hopefully by college next year I'll have found something decent.

Yeah that's true, I just seem to have a bit of a prejudice against them thanks to all the r!cers we see. But yeah nothing wrong with em as a fuel efficient family car.

Re: Post your winter beaters!

Well, my old post is now totally invalid. Today my dad and I picked up a black '87 S10 Tahoe 2.8L for $600, pretty solid, lots of rust on the sides of the bed, but hey its a beater. So now it'll be my winter car this year and hopefully the next few years in college. It's also now our year-round hauler, which is nice because now we don't have to dirty up the '54 Dodge truck in winter when we need to get lumber or what have you. No pics cuz its dark, but I'll try to take some tomorrow. It is DEFINITELY a dog, not used to something so slow other than the '54, but I'm cool with it. $600 for a running car without any outstanding tranny, brake, engine or safety issues is pretty damn good in my book.

Oh yeah, I named it The Bear. Funny story with that. I was driving on the highway listening to my favorite classic rock station, and I could barely hear it over the sound of the truck (Its got only the right speakers, and the truck has a short, LOUD, tbh kind of r!cey-sounding exhaust). So I switched to 98.9 The Bear, which plays more hardcore metal-style rock, which since its louder, I could hear better. I think that music fits this truck more anyways, so that'll be its station most of the time, hence the name. First time I've actually been inspired to name a vehicle, normally I call em Birdie or The Truck or stuff like that.

EDIT: Got some (really shitty) pics!

Don't worry, it looks much shittier in real life!

Also, not driving it until we can replace the exhaust on Tuesday. Turns out the muffler is loose in the back of the cat, and my dad's worried about fumes getting in the cab, so we're replacing with a stock catback.

Re: Post your winter beaters!

I have a 2000 Ford..ewww Ranger XLT 4x4 lol, i find it kind of ironic that my winter beater is in way nicer shape and two and a half times more than my camaro lol. i only payed 2500 for the ranger wich is the only reason i bought it. probably after all this damn snow and cold when my camaro is back out i might try to sell it for wat its worth and buy a cheap 500 dollar truck and dump the rest of the money into a MOTOR lol

Dude you should get a 36in Cherrybomb to made it rumble. i bet it would sounds better than the stock just get someone to weld it in w/ new pipes and a polished 3in tip angled down behind one th the rear wheels.

Haha yeah that would be sweet, but we've already got the new exhaust on it. Besides, any money I spend on upgrades will be spent on the Firebird! Anways, the new exhaust sounds way better than it was, even has a hint of that low rumble that makes me love my Firebird so much, though not nearly as good sounding of course.

Nice cars btw!

I bought it from a young couple nearby and use it as my DD/ winter beater. It came with some sort of amp and two 12" subs in the trunk. Yeah, it looks funny to see this old guy driving down the road with Foghat thumping!

Re: Post your winter beaters!

Oh god no, the eclipse is a fun car till the the timing belt goes. Make sure u change them no later then 100k miles at a time. My wife had one when we first dated and the idler for the timing belt went. It had already had a rebuilt head with just 120k. Bent a valve. Put it together and the oil pump went a few months later. It was the base car so I sold it and got a better one. Same thing. Timing belt went and had to rebuild the head. Got it together and it had a spun rod bearing. Junk.

Oh ya my winter cars are the Camaro and Mustang this year. Last few years where a explorer or honda accord.

My talon gets the timing belt changed every 50k.

No wonder you had a bad experience with one - you're supposed to change them every 60k - not 100k xD

Just gotta take care of DSM's and they'll take care of you

I've got two beaters between my wife and I.

We bought this car from her dad, it's a 2001 Focus. I hate the car, I want to trade it in for a G8 GT really soon!

Yup... no beater this year. I'm using public transportation to go to school and I'm borrowing one of my parents vehicles when I go to work. If I ever want to hang out with friends I need them to come get me. Oh well, I'm saving a lot of money.

Re: Post your winter beaters!

Because I cant afford driving 60 miles round trip in my 2500 I got this little POS civic dx for 900 bucks 5-speed ac that just broke before winter and currently 238,000 miles. Im practicing my body work and paint on this before attempting on my nova so its something I can learn on and not really care. So far one quarter fixed, rocker panel fixed and a few other bits and pieces that needed alot more metal than thought.

Re: Post your winter beaters!

amazingly enough, right now my 89 firebird base model with the 2.8l engine is my daily driver. I also have a 89 Chrystler New Yorker, that I need to drop the fuel tank on, once I have it fixed the bird will be relegated to the garage to begin the rebuild, and update. I am going to build a chevy 350 small block to put under the hood, thinking about upgrading the rear end and rebuilding the trans to handle the power.

Calling it a pos/junk just because it has some extra maintenance to it and you neglected to do it is quite a stupid statement.
