Car buying advice, 1989 IROC-Z

Hi everyone, just asking for everyones input on this. I owned a 84' Berlinetta a couple years ago but had to get rid of it. Now that I'm almost out of college (going for Automotive technology) I'm looking to get another third gen. Theres a 89' IROC near me that looks promising but I don't know a whole lot about the cars themselves and if the price is good for it. What do you guys think, this is what the seller has told me

"$8,500 OBO. 1989 iroc-z Camaro. 5.0TPI automatic transmission. Runs and drives great. Small dents and paint isn't perfect. Vehicle is all original. Cash only clean title. I have owned it for 15 years and it's time for someone else to enjoy. I am the 3rd owner of the vehicle. Nothing major has been done to it since I've owned it, did just put 1400 into it with getting some new sensors put in/fuel pump last fall to get her running nice and smooth. She does have a shift kit, I didn't put that in the description. In the second photo you can see some discoloration above the wheel well, not sure what happened there as I have not done any body work to it since I've had it the past 15 years"

Pictures and RPO label are shown below

It does appear to be mostly stock, sans the exhaust tips (could be just tips or could have had exhaust work). How many miles are on it? The car looks like its a little rough given the asking price.

Looks to be 127,000 miles as it's the 5 digit odometer

I've seen this car on FB Market place. How's the undercarriage look?

I had have to ask, but from what I was able to get from a report, it's been in South Dakota all it's life up until recently when the owner moved to Nebraska

Re: Car buying advice, 1989 IROC-Z

A couple of things:

The clearcoat has failed; the car needs a complete repaint along with correct repair of that poorly-repaired nose damage and rust repair on at least that passenger-side-rear wheel well. Additionally, if there's rust you can see, there's likely to be rust you can't see; you'll need to get under the car and look the underside over.

With 127K on the original drive train (what about the suspension?), it's likely the car will soon need some major mechanical repairs. Ask the seller for maintenance documentation.

That sub box and amp is a red flag that the wiring has been futzed with; that's something else you'll need to inspect very carefully.

There are better 3rd gens out there for what the guy is asking for that one. JMO, of course.

Whatever you decide, good luck.

Honestly this is what I was looking for, thanks a great deal for your input, I can thank you enough, I will ask the seller a few more things and see where that goes but as it stands right now, I'll probably hold out until something else comes up!

Thanks again so much!

... and it's a LB9 MD8 GU2 QYZ... 195HP, AT with a 2.73 gear, 215 65R15 tires and rear drums, 127K miles. Don't except to go fast.

Looks like a $6000 to $7000 car to me not seeing under side or hearing it run
