whats up everyone?! I'm new to this site and I need some advice on what type of headers and ehaust i should get for my camaro. I was leaning more towards the super competition hooker headers. However, I heard that in Cali. it is illegal to have the full-long headers. Is this true or have people been telling me non-sense? Anyways, if you guys think otherwise on brand let me know and also on the size, whether it has to be, 2 1/2 or 3? Also, I need advice on a complimentary exhaust system to the headers. I hear Flowmaster is best on sound but lags a bit on performance. I've been told to go with SLP, Borla, Corsa(how about Hooker exhaust?) I need to know what size, 2 1/2 or 3. I'm having trouble deciding so if any of you guys could help it would awesome.

yes long tubes are and NOT smog legal but hooker does make headers that are smog legal and they are the better of the headers out there. the only headers that are better are the SLP's but they cost $$$$. go with the 3" exhaust

oh and welcome to TGO

Long tubes aren't all "illegal", it is just that the majority of them do not have AIR injection, thus making them non-CA-smog-**** happy.

I got the newly redesigned Hedman's that have this sweet ball and socket gasketless flange like the rustang headers have had for years. Couldn't be happier.

Just like the day I ripped all of that crap out of my engine bay

I'm a Flowmaster fan, but go 3" and 40 series or dont bother.

Some members here have other muffler brands like Spintech / Magnaflow / SLP. It is a personal choice and each muffler sounds different and the same muffler can sound different on another car because everyone's setup is different.

I'm happy with mine, it's quiet in the cab but loud as fvck behind the car. I love watching people cover their ears when I fly past them or start up

Actually vin, LTs are illegal because 1. No AIR injection usually, and 2. They change the position of the catalytic converter. Because of that reason only shorties are "legal" in CA. The best legal shorties for thirdgens are imo Hooker 2055s. Edelbrock also makes the TES headers and there is the expensive SLP alternative.

Go 3" on the exhaust and get the catback you think sounds the best. There are alot of sound clips in the exhaust forum.

I'm going to have to disagree w/ ya on that one.
SLP (hense the name Street Legal Performance) has always made 1 3/4 headers that are emissions compliant.
They provide a lot of extra hardware for the setup hense the $800 price after adaptor, etc.
The majority of techs will not note the cat placement on a general smog.

I was going to go with an all SLP setup when I started out, runners, exhaust, etc, but found my Hooker 2055's for too good a deal to pass up.
I do have the SLP CAI, TC, thermo and airfoil though.
Good quality parts, wish they made more.

Those are shorty headers del, they're legal. I was talking about long tubes. No one sells long tubes with air provisions for thirdgens.. they do for fourths but not thirds. Even the long tubes with air are NOT legal, because of cat position change.

oh...

I agree esp. for thirdgens because all LT's for thirdgens don't have AIR and I believe those are Hooker Super Comps only right?

Yeah I see the diff w/ those long tube Hedmans.
You're right, no AIR. I've got the tubes on my Super Comp shorties.

I didn't even know about the whole "cat placement" thing.

i dont even our current guy at the shop would catch that he is very very tough haha he used to work for bar for the ref station

there is no diagram that says exactly where the cat is supposed to be,

as long as the cat is there and air injection is there thats all they are looking for

That too, and no long tubes have a CARB EO number, because of the cat placement thing. My smog guy doesn't give a **** what's under the hood so I'm set
