Hey, anyone had a 700r4 go out on them? How much time from when I have a NOTICEABLE slippage between shifts will this thing finally build up too much heat and die? burnout: <(that guys spun!)

i had suddenly lost 3rd gear in a matter of minutes on the highway way outta town, i babied it 50 miles back to my house, and by the time i got home, i barely had first left lol

I drove mine without third gear for the better part of a year - just did some in town driving. After you get a new trannie, and if ever it gets towed, make sure they put your rear wheels on dollies. They didn't with my first trans and it fried it but good. They try to tell you that it's okay to tow it up to 25 miles, but it isn't true. The rear pump is designed to have torque/force thru the trans from the engine to the rearend. With mine, they towed it and the torque went backwards, from the rearend forward, and burnt up the rear pump. Anyways- drive it till it stops if you have to then do a quality rebuild. I found a great local mechanic that did mine for $1200 with a shift kit, stronger internals, a bit higher converter, and a poly trans mount. My first trans died at 60,000 and everyone I've talked with says the first trannie always goes quick. The key is change your oil regularly and keep it at the proper temp. Do a search for the proper temp, I believe it was 170. It's on my list of gauges to add as well. Good luck and good bowling.

FWIW, I was getting some serious flare up between gears although the tranny didn't slip. I tried all that bullcrap Lucas tranny additive but it didn't work.

What I ended up doing was simply throwing a corvette servo in. It cost me 15 bucks off ebay and I had a good friend in Stockton (Ramair20) put it in for some games in trade.

After that, the flare up was gone. The remaining problem was evident at the dyno... some crap with WOT and the shift points (fuct if I know). Tony drove my car and would prolly say it short shifts but it works fine for my purposes. Worth a shot for 20 bucks or so? I don't know.

Not really. It was simply going into this neutral-type state between gears and just spun the engine.

Remember?

Well, it's really driveable now. Just not great for the track.

you should have made them pay for you trans, cars should be towed by the drive wheels. I always asked for a flat bed when I had my car towed

the camaro im getting has a 700 in it thats just about done. it still has all the gears, but it slips somethin fierce. i can brakestand on it, and itll stall all the way to 2500rpms. its pretty bad.

Yeah, for 20 bucks its worth a shot. Thanks, Ill try and get ahold of one this weekend and find out if i gotta drop the pan and valve body or not.

After i got my trans really really hot at an auto x and decided to do my last run anyways 2nd gear was gone complely. It just jumped from first to third with a big clunk. Drove fine though as long as i didnt go into 2nd or 3rd rather heavy on the gas. it was fine around town.
