Check the tbi board, then realize that it is much easier to find a used tpi setup with computer and harness and deal with a referee station then to play with the tbi.

If you got the money to burn and the time for a project, engine swap is the idea. If not and you want a great daily driver with consistent performance and decent econmy on the freeway with torque for any traffic situation, the 305 will do you fine.
Check out some threads on the TBI boards and read all the stickies over there. Getting over 200 HP in the 305 TBI can be an expensive proposition. There's nothing wrong with the engine depending on what your needs are.

well thats not true a tbi can make more power
but you get farther with a tpi system
i would start off with basic stuff, exhaust headers, 3 inch cat back with dual cats, air cleaner, feel like some grease work a cam and rocker arms.
this will require chip work but for the money i would just go with headers and intake cause the headers can be reused, and than just switch to a 350 tpi
you actually dont have to go through ref really 350 tpi was an engine option that year so its just a basic swap over
welcome to the board

the BIGGEST thing to remember in building a tbi motor is the tbi unit itself. You MUST reprogram the chip to give the car more fuel, or you won't get anywhere.
First off, your heads suck. Completely. They're the horrible 305 swirl port heads. Finding some replacement heads off a TPI car would give you some more power, porting them is even better.
Second off, you have a very small cam. A quick cam swap and you'll be +30 rwhp with some tuning.
Consider a full headers back exhaust as your first mod, you won't be disappointed. It's a little less daunting than a heads/cam swap, but eventually you'll want more.
