My evening at SRP

Sorry for intruding on your territory, but just wanted to say howdy.

I'm in the Sacramento area on business, got finished a little early and decided to head out for Wednesday night Fun Drags night. I'd dropped by a couple of times earlier and just spectated, this time I decided to pay the extra $8 and try to run. My rental was a 2007 Impala with the 3500 V6 - no barn-burner, but not the slowest thing out there!

I saw several 3rd gens out, some pretty nice, but never seemed to get a chance to talk to any of the owners. Probably because there was a really clean '55 two-door post (327, dual quads, 4-speed, 9", etc.) that was right behind me while we waited for the first run.

So, how'd it go for me? First run was a 16.51 @ 84.6 with a .118 RT & 2.4 60'. 2nd run I thought I'd try more stall, produced a .198 RT with the rest of the run slower - 2.5/16.64/84.5. That was the last TT I got, first round I dialed a 16.55 and hoped for a better light. Wasn't to be, I must have drawn the only person out there that could cut better than a .2 light, while I had a fantastic .258 RT - but I was still way ahead at 1000', backed off, even hit the brakes, but still broke out! His .185 light combined with his 16.000 on a 15.99 dial was enough to put me away. The crazy car picked up .17 by 1000', probably would have run at least a 16.34 if I'd stayed in it. Too bad I couldn't pick up the RT by the same amount. . .

I got back in line to do some fun runs, but before I ran again a Civic spilled its guts from about 1000' on, so that ended the night at about 9 p.m.

Fastest 3rd gen I remember seeing was running low-13's on street tires. But, I wasn't able to see all the action.

I can't tell from their website how long they run, but I'll probably be back in the area next month.

Cool, thanks for stopping by.
You know a real raceway crankster when they take the v6 rental car during a business trip out.
What did you think of the track compared to where you've been before?

What color was the low 13's 3rd gen, blue?
Couldn't be Eric (porky), but his red IROC was 'sposed to be out there too.

The only tracks I've been to lately are Bandimere, Heartland Park, and Pomona, all "Tour" tracks. SRP is like a blast from the past with a barebones operation, creaky bleachers, and a laid-back crowd. Cool. One big difference is real-live spectators - most ET racing spectators are racers waiting to run or watching friends after they've gone out.

Man, I'm trying to remember the color of the faster 3rd gens. I think one was red and one was blue, also remember a primered front clip one in the staging lanes that I never saw run. I just wasn't taking good enough notes. . .

When I turned the Impala in this afternoon, I had driven it 146 miles and it averaged 25.2 MPG over that time, including the 3 runs. Not too shabby, huh?

When I got back in town, I met my wife and son at his horse riding event before going home. My wife & I then went down to see our other horse, which is under a vet's care (if you think the car hobby is expensive. . .). On the way home after that, my wife asked me about the Impala and running at SRP, and said, "Too bad you can't take the Camaro or '57 and run it out there." That got me to thinking - if they're still running those Wednesday night races next time I'm out there, I could just drive the Camaro over. The company will pay for mileage up to the cost of a plane ticket, so. . .

A new silver Impala, by chance? I was paired with a black Mustang in the first round of eliminations. A clean car, but barely faster than the Impala!

That's pretty cool, too bad I missed ya up there. If I had known you'd be there I probably woulda made the trip. Did you see a cammed LT1 camaro putting down 12.6s at 112? That was my friend Todd. He has an LE1 package, smog legal.

I took my Camaro to sears point though - it's closer and I was with friends. No best times, just low 13s in the 104 range. I could only borrow a set of nittos and wasnt hookin with them at all. I want those MT E/T streets back!

FWIW, I'll be back in town on Wed, Nov 1. Not sure how soon I'll be able to get away from work; last time Wednesday was the last day of the task and we finished early, this time it is the first day. So, we'll see, but I hope to be able to get out there and wander around the staging lanes if nothing else. I'll try to take better notes of what/who to look out for.

I went up to watch your run. Looked like you had a decent light but slipped on the line (since that's the only run I've seen you make, not sure what's normal for you). Other guy was close to his dial, but couldn't tell how much he had on you at the top end.

I helped the silver '85 get his car jumped - he didn't get it running until they started running the next lane. He pulled back into lane 1 right beside you, I talked to him for about 20 minutes, then had to make a trip. I looked for you and the blue Z owner, whose alarm was going off but he wasn't around. It started the sprinkling and everybody split.

I'll probably be back in town 2 or 3 more times, in the next month. I gathered from the SRP website that these Wed night runs go through November, but I couldn't determine if anything is going on in December. I'm seriously considering bringing out the Camaro, but at best that won't work until next month.
