WORLD OF WHEELS IN CHICAGO
By Scott Phillips (Roselle, Illinois PD)
What a Show! It may well have been the best ever. McCormick Place was overbooked for the show by 60 cars. However, ALL of the participants were provided room for their displays. There were well over 500 cars and exhibits. Of course, most impressive was the police racing teams and DARE exhibits.

Arlington Heights, Illinois PD’s 1992 Camaro sported a fresh paint job and was very impressive to say the least. Roselle and Bolingbrook PD’s racecars were in the same group and made for a great display. Both cars were in line with each other, (of course, the Olds was first) and were complimented by trophies, big pictures of the cars in action, display boards, too many handouts to list, and a TV monitor. Both Officer Scott Phillips of the Roselle PD and Sgt. Mike Johnstone of the Bolingbrook PD were there for the duration of the event, at least 10 hours a day. Both officers nearly lost their voices from talking to so many young people.

Thousands of folks from all over the Chicago area came by, many on them youngsters. These kids got some great memories when the drivers of both teams let kids sit in the driver’s seats of the racecars while their Dads took their pictures. Trading cards were also a HUGE hit! The gave out well over 4000 of them. Many topics were discussed ranging from street racing to alcohol abuse and even to home security and safety.

The rivalry between these two teams is heating up enough to melt the Chicago snow. Bolingbrook High School’s Auto Shop, assisted by Sgt. Johnstone and the BPD Heat Team, is building a Pro Eliminator Chevy Monte Carlo strictly for the strip. It will be driven by some of the Bolingbrook High School Shop Students.

Meanwhile, the Roselle PD Racing Team has recruited several enthusiastic Seniors from Roselle’s Lake Park High School to participate in the Friday Night Auto-Meter High School Drags at Rt.66 Raceway at Joliet. Under the guidance of the 1998 Modified Cop Champ, Scott Phillips, the competition is sure to be exciting. Check the ET Racing edition of national Dragster for reports.

The Illinois Chapter of Beat the Heat, Inc. wants to invite all our members to the Chicago Shootout at Joliet’s Rt. 66 Raceway. This event will be on Saturday, September 16 and will benefit the Wish Upon a Star Foundation. All Heat Teams are invited and we expect to see the Southeast Wisconsin and Indiana Chapter Teams at this event. We would love to have a 16-car field at one of the premier drag racing facilities in the country. You can contact Sgt. Mike Johnstone of the Bolingbrook PD for more details.

There were many nice comments about the Beat the Heat Teams at Chicago. Bolingbrook Police Chief Each was quoted as saying, "These guys are true Ambassadors of Police. They have given the citizen a different and positive attitude toward police through these race cars." Ann Scalina of Elgin, Illinois remarked, "It’s amazing how well these officers work with young kids. What these guys are doing is truly wonderful.

Scott and Mike’s comments were, "Can’t wait for Spring!"

Big Thanks! Go out to those who made the trip to Chicago possible. They include Barker Automotive in Bartlett, Illinois, The Roselle Police Association, Detective Mike Marotta, Hollywood Kennels in Roselle, Village Autobody of Bolingbrook and Heartbreak Towing in Bolingbrook.

World of Wheels is a very difficult show because of the huge numbers of people who attend. Hats off to both teams for going above and beyond the call!

I believe we are all true car people here and there are truly some fantastic cars there. I go to probably about 50 shows a year and this is one of my favorites. Best way to know is to go.

Maybe I will have to go this year...

Have the changed the cars in the last 5 yrs? Gave up because I got sick of paying $$$ to see the same things every year.

I've been to WOW 3-4 times... There's always some nice cars, but also plenty of stuff that doesn't really belong at a show you'd pay to attend. I'm hard to impress overall, so I'm pretty apathetic toward WOW. I get easily annoyed by crowds and the overly-excitable people that often attend such events.

If you like lowriders, washed-up B-list stars/sorta-famous people looking for exposure, and bike tricks, there's always something at WOW for that. Lots of vendors selling the same stuff as the vendor you just walked by, etc.

Overall, I've seen better cars at free weekend small town carshows. But there's also nothing else going on this time of year. Overall-- not worth the $$$ or hassle, IMO.

well it was fun back in the day when they had decent shows
and i was able to meet my hero Dale Earnhardt (3) and other nascar drivers: Kyle Petty & Rusty Wallace there and got their signatures...on several stuff...
lately it has been nothing but imports and a lowerider shows which i'm not into...
however from what i was told they're trying to go back to their old ways and hopefully show more muscle then anything else.
My Uncle is Planning on showing his 2002 WS6 Ram Air/ Year One/Carl Black Stage 1 Trans Am prototype...so hopefully if he does i get to tag along for free..perhaps we should make a gathering date for this?
i haven't been back there in like 3 or 4 years..so wouldn't mind checking it out again.
