Would it be faster to shift from 1st through 3rd rather then leaving it in 3rd gear..
Hey
I am going to the track again on friday night and I want to know if it would be quicker to shift the car manually from 1st through 3rd instead of just leaving it in 3rd for the 1/4 mile. What do u guys find the quickest with auto transmission.
Thanks

I'm assuming your automatic...
Yes it's alot faster to shift the auto yourself. You can bring each gear up to the redline then shift her. If not the redline, get used to where it is your car pulls hard to, then when you reach the rpm where it doesn't pull as hard, thats when you know to shift.
I found the 305, that was around 4400-4600 rpm.

Mine is set to shift at 5500RPM in 1st and 5000RPM in second. The transmission still shifts at the redline. I can bring it to redline without driving it manually. Is there still any advantage.
I've heard that when the shifter is in the 1st or 2nd position it almost doubles line pressure which makes it shift faster and improves clutch life. I might be mistaken about that though.
If the transmission is working properly it should be best to leave it in D.
I know my 4L60E uses the computer to control the ****s. It hits the same point every time.
That said,
In my '85 t/a I found it was faster when I shifted it myself...but then again it had a few trans issues.
Try it both ways at the track and you'll know which works best for you for sure.
