track prepping tips?

im so happy because one week from friday im going with some friends from my school and another school as a car club thing to texas motorplex in Ennis. the only 1/4 mile track really around dallas. i was wanting to know if anyone had any tips on how to free up some power or somethin that will help me run faster as of right now this next week im doing the following:

1. oil change (its time for one)
2. Zmax engine/tranny restoration kit (basically fuel and oil treatment)
3. advancing timing 6 degrees
4. weight reduction

is there anything else i can do that anyone can think of? also any ball park on what ill run w/ my mods? im hoping for a mid 15

oil change

Always good, can never do too many of those

ZMax junk

Id skip the oil additaves. Most of those are jsut snake oil anyway

advancing timing 6 deg.

More timing isnt always better. It can slow you down real easy if you run too much, even if knock isnt detected. Try adding base in one or two degree increments at a time and see if your times improve. Dont goover 6 deg past the stock setting though. Another thing is that timing and fuel are coupled together so more timing will generally result in the need for more fuel.

weight reduction

The spare tire and stuff that goes along with it are about the only big ticket items you can remove w/o altering the car. Maybe the rear seats + seat back but thats a pain to take out just to save 40 lbs or so.

When and what time are you going to Ennis? I live near there, and if I have nothing to do, I just might show up!

lower your rear tire pressure to 22-24psi and raise the fronts to about 45psi. Also, try to run it with as little fuel possible, i always run mine with <1/4 tank.

I ran my car with 1/4 tank of gas once. It was faster with a full tank of gas and the MPH was up too so it want because of the fact i was hooking up. There is no problem with hooking up with 2.73 gears.

You might also look into buying an open element filter for it if its TBI and you dont have one already.

yeah i already have an open element. but we're going the 14th and the gates open @ 6:00 p.m. also i need to do somethin w/ my tranny cuz it leaks fluid so i put in some a few days ago but i raced a guy in an f150 today and he beat me cuzi just held my foot to the floor and it took forever to shift it just stayed at like 5k rpm and i dunno if i shouldnt romp on it or let off i need to check my timing real bad too so hopefully everything will work out and ill get the e.t. im wanting, also i think my car is running real bad cuz i ened an oil change. that affects performance quite a bit right?

Did you make sure to check the fluid with the engine running, trans in P/N, and the vehicle on level ground? Other then making sure the tv cable is adjusted theres not much else you can do. The trans may just be shot. If it is slipping real bad you wont get the time you want. Same reason I dont go. Dont want to look like an idiot going down the track with the motor turning at 6500 rpm the whole way only to turn a 16 something. Your pretty much just burning up friction material, heating up the fluid, and wasting power when its slipping like that.

FINALY SOMEONE SAYS IT.

actualy in my current chip, i am retarted timing 3* in the upper rpm ranges. and advanced 4* in the lower areas, along with smoothing out the timing curve. advancing the timing helps with building cyl. pressure at the lower RPMs, but hurts you in the upper rmps. remeber, it is all abotu cyl. pressure, and timing it so the burn happens at just the right point. it varies from car to car, but don't crank the timing as far as you can go, just give the motor what it wants.

Depending on your tire, going below 26psi could do more harm than good in that your tire will cave in the center.

Removing your front sway bar will save roughly 30lbs up front and help with weight transfer.

Good point. If you have relatively wide somewhat economy minded tires then they probably have a more compliant carcass and theyll 'cup' in the center without enough pressure to support them.

i just got my oil change today, man it was really black! i also bought prolong oil treatment instead of Zmax, thanx vwdave by the way. the guys at jiffy lube were talkin to me about stuff to do at the track they were saying that i can disconnect my AC compressor and if i turn my heater on while runnin itll act as a second radiator or something.

Dont add anything to the oil, just put the oil in by itself. The lube manufacturers already put in a good, balanced additive package and the designer oil treatments that are on the shelf are of little use. If you want to do your car a favor, use a quality synthetic in place of the conventional oil and change all your fluids on time. Remember gear oil (+ friction modifier if appl.) in the diff, transmission fluid in the trans, and motor oil in the motor. Shouldnt add anything else as the manufacturer already puts in the necessary additives to help ensure the best performance and cleaning properties of the lubricant.

If you want to add anything to your oil, use Lucas oil additive. The stuff makes your oil stick to everything. It'll stick to the cylinders walls, crank and camshaft to prevent a dry start.

this is the conclusion to my thread because today was my last bit of work, i removed my spare and jack (easy) i took out my back seats i dunno why everyone said they were a pain its just 4 bolts, i took off my wiper fluid resevoir, adjusted my timing finally. for some reason my timing was already really advanced to 14* or so and my car always idled real high so i turned it down to 4-5* and i went to go get gas and drive around a bit and for some reason it was like fighting to stay alive and throttle response and power sucked so i advanced it back up to 8* and wow it runs awesome better than before and now ive shaved some weight off so im excited now hopefully it wont rain and i can see my work count for something at the track, also anyone in the dallas area who wants to come we're going on this friday and the gates open at 6, it would be nice to have another third gen there plus im most likely going to be the slowest car there because almost all of my friends are spoiled heres the list of cars goin and tell me how spoiled they are cuz no one paid for anything
