8.99@87mph WTF????
Im pretty disappointed in my car for running a 8.99, but i dont really understand why it run such a high MPH and didnt run the time. It didnt spin of the line, but i did have to baby it off the line to keep the carb from studdering. anyone know why it would run such a high MPH and not the time and ways to improve? Thanks for the help

i do think your right, but i just roll in to the throttle and not punch it, but im not babying it for very long, but i hope your right, because i found my studdering problem being too much pump shot from the secondaries, so its fixed now

mw66nova is dead on. I had a similar issue at the beggining of last summer. Because I had to be so light on the throttle (more for traction reasons than carb though) off the line, I got a VERY poor 60' time, and was running like 15.3 or 15.4 at some rediculous speeds like 95 or 96mph. I even ran a 15.32 once at 99mph LOL.
But yea.... get the carb in tune so you can romp on it right off the line, get a good 60' and our times will drop. Once I had a good set of tires on my car, I was able to get on the throttle alot harder off the line, and ran MUCH better times, like 14.6 or 14.5... and thats with no other changes whatsoever. Only tires that let me get out of the hyole alot faster.

all the above are right.
your babyin it off the line makes it slow in the first 330 feet and then your power comes in and takes off! goin off the line slow will make your ET's horrible but mph is the indicator of your power.
and 700r4 gearing sucks too. the 1-2 shift is a drop. that alone also helps make your times slow.

Im not understanding the 1-2 shift drop, i do have 3:73 gear and a built 700r4 and i shift a 6,500 rpm

he is refering to the wide spread in gear ratio between 1st and 2nd. 1st is 3.06:1 and 2nd is something like 1.7:1

yeah its a 3.06 to 1.63... quite a drop tho it really doesnt seem like much in the car, but it does play a little role. i could definately feel it when the car had 2.77s. second really killed over, while first was just a rocket. 3.27's now help alot but still its effective in slowing down acceleration.

with my steep gears(4.10's) and loose converter (4000) i don't really notice this drop either, but i suppose it's there! my car would probably be faster with a th350 (lighter, less distance between gears, etc.) but i'm not willing to give up my street car just yet. i like the fact that i can drive my car anywhere...and boy do i!

no idea, what is your setup?
i ran 8.2x's at 82mph, so i'd imagine that 87mph would be good for some 7.8's.
go ahead and invest in some good tires too!

Hopefully the weather is nice here next Sunday, and i have all my new parts and i can get some improved times, keeping my fingers crossed!!
Anyways, i really thank you guys for your help and comments, i was really disappointed when i looked up at the times display at the end of the track, it wasnt til later some people told me it was @87mph, but thanks and if you have anymore suggestions let me know

excuse me while i roll my eyes, lol! my car is a daily driver as well and it acts JUST fine on the street.anyhow, i shift at 6500 so there is a ton of difference in the setups, and i'm sure that's why i can utilize the 700r4 like i do.

all i was saying was if i wanted to optimize my ET's for my given combo, more stall on a different better gear ratio trans like a TH350 would be more ideal. also better suspension/tires. but i'm not gonna sacrifice the daily driving qualities that OD 700r4 provides me, and the handling my suspension gives me.

:update: i pulled the engine out the other day, to replace the oil pan and inspect the short block, so i decided to take the cam out and see how it was wearing....6 lobes completely wore off. Im going to replace the Comp XE268 hydrolic cam with a solid lift cam. And i just got a 3200 9" convertor to throw in it. So next time at the dragstrip it should run ALOT better.

I installed new heads on it around a year ago, they must have been to tight adjusting the valves
