Bad day at the track....9 bolt took a crap
well after waiting about a month or so for saturday test and tunes so i can race my car again, today was the day.
new mods since last time were some chip changes, spohn torque arm, and advanced to 10 degrees timing (base)
great weather... 59-60 degrees or so. sunny. little to no wind...
i did my first burnout and lined up. from what some buddies of mine said, i was only spinning the right side wheel untill i let off teh brakes to carry the burnout thru, then the left finally caught.
its been doing similar activities for a while just not as bad i guess..so i knew the posi was on its way out.
well i lined up, stalled it up as high as i could go, and left on the third yellow.
new best 60 foot! 1.79 on my full exhaust only 2800 stall L98! i had near 3/4 tank gas too.
but i soon realized something wasnt right. cuz thru top of first it kinda felt like the car spun tire but i know it didnt.
i went thru the traps feeling confident on a nice 13 second run, somewhere in the 13.7's i hoped. but as soon as i started turning to exit off the strip, the rearend made all kinds of noises... grinding banging bumping around,, like something was binding up.
i thought i dropped the crossmember or exhaust or something weird. but it went away as i straightened out... then came back as i turned again. so i pulled over and looked...everythign looked good.
but the damage is done... the posi is shot... it BANGS loudly and bumps/bounces around sorta as i'm turning..and only in the turns... i drove home 20 min at 50mph and it was fine. so it sucks..i got one run in. and my car is down now for awhile
and to make it worse....it was a bad run...14.0 at 94mph!!! WAY OFF my average of 13.8's at 97 which was in the 80 degree heat!! so i was wondering if any posi damage slowed my acceleration??
or if something else is wrong with the motor now...like too much timing or something durin the gasket installation went wrong and i'm down on power??? i have no idea now and am very dissappointed.

Sorry to hear that man!
Time was probably posi related, and posi probably went out totally during the one wheel peel - thats alot of strain on poor little spider gears.
Pull cover and check out ring and pinion, if they are ok - it a 1hr fix with a new posi.
Or if you want my 10 bolt with 3.73's let me know, sorry bout problems.
I had given a member on here (2) 9 bolts, one of which was a 3 series carrier.

i still have my original 140K miles 2.77 gears and posi. i could always put that back in but its gonna suck LOL... i think if i dont bite the bullet and try to get a 12 bolt, i'm just gonna put that ls1 rear end in. 3.42's and bigger brakes, that aint too bad

If you do go with a different rear end I may be interested in the 2.77's and old posi carrier, mine's doing the same stuff with the 1 wheel peel and making a pretty nasty hiss going down the road.

heres some pics, u can see one piece layin in the bottom of the case, and a piece sittin in the little opening on the posi carrier.

I think you need a 3500 Stall, Drag Radials, 4.10's, and let it eat. Gears help autos do wonders!

TPI doesnt like that tho... i got a 2800 that seems to flash to 3000-3100. 3.42 gears now and 26inch tall et streets. that seems to be the best combo for stock TPI. full modded TPI might get away with 3.73's, but would be perfect with a 9 inch and 3.50's or converted 8.8 with 3.55's

TPI's actually like low gears and big stalls. 2.73's with a 3500rpm lock up stall will feel like 3.73's in a Mustang. It's just where TPI makes power, we need a big gear to use the short fat power band, going through the traps at 5700rpm when your engine quit making torque at 5000 is bad, as is blowing up either the tires, or the gears on the line.

yeah i ran some good times with the 2.77s
when i launched right on the street tires, i could cut high 1.8 60's and run 13.8's-13.9s. my best was 13.89 with a 1.89 60 foot on the street tires. on slicks it would have went bottom 13.8's and 1.8x 60 foots. but i never got slicks for it till after the 3.27s. 3.27s already went 1.79 60 foot with the EST wire disconnected. best run in the heat was 13.79. TPI love those gears. they dont have topend so they need those more highway gears

You guys need to get line locks for burn outs..your posi`s will thank you... years of trouble free use, not preachin` just been there and done that and learned the lesson

Let me second that one! That's the next mod I'm looking into, I spun a posi cone out in my 9 bolt because of a weak brake caliper, never again! Line Locks are cheap and they'll make your posi VERY happy plus you save rear brakes and will be second to none at a burn out contest
As of late I've been doing my burn outs with no brake, the guys in the staging lanes don't appreciate it but if it keeps my rear end alive a little longer screw em.

i'm sure a line lock would be great but i dont drag race all that often....and dont do brake standing burnouts often either. that gear oil only has about 14K miles on it, probly less... surprised it looks soo dark

well the posi is a cone type diff, but yeah it prbly was from the posi only spinning the one tire. it was wearing out and one tire spins harder than the other and the last two trips to the track, i was only spinning one slick and then the other would come on later
