thinking autocross
im looking into a 91 t/a. its a stock tpi 305 and 700r4. before i get the go do a search routine i plan to and read what i can find. before i go tearing into the car and change everything i want to know minimal what i can do. im not really thinking anything for the engine. i want to change to a stealthram but after i build a motor not for a 100k 305. mainly suspention. the car will duty as a driver for the most part.
rundown is i want to know gradually what i can do. i consider myself a good driver in just about any car and road condition. i want to get my feet wet in competition and im not in the position to dump funds into the car yet.
if i get the car ill probably get ready for the next season at raceway park in englishtown.
thanks

Re: thinking autocross
The 700R4 is a tough trans to autocross with. You really should go with a manual.
The 305 TPI has enough low end torque to move the car nicely. You need a good suspension set up, a set of GTA crosslace wheels to save weight, some sticky tires and at least 1LE front brakes.
It is a hard car to autocross though because the nose so long and the car is really big.
Give it a try, it's fun!

It's a lot of fun, even if you have a mushy v6 suspension.

Re: thinking autocross
Tires and suspension will be the best place to start. In autocross you'll find out that your car as stock can handle more curves than your capable of taking. And I wouldnt try too many hard turns with a bum shoulder, ask your doctor. Have fun.
Re: thinking autocross
I have an auto and it hasn't hampered my outings. Its all how you build them.
Some would say I have an unfair advantage since I do not have to work as hard in the cockpit. Heck I am even famous for having one behind a pathetic 165hp V6 and still noone has touched me in autox.

With a bum shoulder, consider a steering wheel ****, like they used in the 50s/60s.
My whole left side (arm, leg, EVERYTHING, due to a brain injury) and I got me a $10 steering wheel **** at Tractor Supply.

Re: thinking autocross
sorry to hear about your brain. i thought about a suicide **** just to tick my wife off. now im not sure whats up with the t/a. im trying to trade my 80 camaro. i just cant belive how much trouble i am having unloading this thing. i thank barret jackson. thanks to them cars worth $0.50 sell for 20 grand and my car with 10 grand in it isnt even moving for almost half price.
as far as auto vs manual in my experance its on driving type and the course. i know in my 80 with the 350 and 4spd i can rip down a curvy road to a degree and in basically the same time hit al lmy marks in my wifes 07 auto elantra. i know of guys in montess's and gn's doing it so its possible. just have to tune the suspention right

Re: thinking autocross
i used to run autox in my 98 camaro 3.8 v6 auto and it did fine i usualy left it in second and ran it. its a lot of fun for that car being stock i plced usualy in the top 5 of my classes but the rear tends to slide out because of it beeing so light. but im setting up my thirdgens to run it the 82 is gona be my hardcore handler. oh and be careful on tires cause take too much air out they can get too hot and slide or stick and roll over themselves

Re: thinking autocross
You'll find, that the 3rd gens, have some of the best handling set ups, short of $$$ cars.
We had a local Rustang LOVER switch to a 3rd gen, in Modified class. He got tired of losing in his Rustang. He hated driving his 3rd gen, but hated losing more!
