Went to the track

So this is my second time to the track with this car. I have about 10 year old dry rotted tires on it (all it does is spin the tires all through first) and still was backfiring through the carb on a hard launch. So its not tunned yet. Better than last time I reported. (14.4 @ 99) The first race it backfired so i let off and then got back into it. Then when I shifted into 2nd (@ 4500 RPM) it didnt shift till ~6000RPM and when it finally did it broke the tires loose shooting me towards the wall and then towards the other lane where i was racing my buddy in his '91 GTA. I managed to keep it in my lane and finish, but that is why the first one is so bad.

1/8... 9.160 @ 80.04
1000'... 11.822

my Dads time was:
60'... 2.248
330'...6.163
1/8... 9.220 @ 81.55
1000"... 11.843
1/4... 14.062 @ 101.92

He is still going on about it. But all in all im pleased. I need new tires then i can tune the car for the track. But for out of the box and running low 14's im happy.

Re: Went to the track

I have the 268 voodoo cam (227/233 @ .050" .489/.504) and i figured about a 9.5:1 c/r give or take .1. I still have the stock 3.23 rear gear. I also have dougs headers and the only exhaust was 3" headman x-tensions.

Re: Went to the track

ok, lets use some common sense here, you say you have dry rotted junk tires on it but yet you take it to the track to see how fast you can go. do you know what a tire can do at 100mph if it fails, you dont want to find out.please make shure your car is in proper working order BEFORE going to the track, check the tires ,brakes , seatbelts, suspension, and look for leaks at home, if you see something you are unshure of , get professional assistance.

Re: Went to the track

His tires probably arent that bad. He just thought it sounded like another good excuse to use because he didnt even get 13's with healthy Vortec setup.

Are those DEFINITELY Vortecs=96-98 vortecs. 062 or 906 castings with the 8 intake bolts or are they 87-95 Centerbolt valve cover heads. Or could they be 305ci vortec heads.......Or you have a LOT of room for improvement. That should be a 12 second car.

Re: Went to the track

they are the 062 castings (12558062). The tires are an excuse but it is also the truth. I didnt have enough money to put into new tires so i used them. The car sat around for 10 years. When i got it, it didnt run so i bought a motor and started building it up. It has power, no doubt about it. I just havent been able to tune it. I dont have an exhaust on it yet or anything. I used those tires cause they held air and the tred looked decent. They where as hard as a rock but i wanted to run it before the tracks close. The heads are off a 97 5.7L chevy truck. I know its not the smartes thing to use those tires but like I said, i wanted to run before the track closed. (bad judgment) I still need to tune my carb better and dial everything else in. Those runs where on 14* initial with the heaviest springs in on the dist and still had the plain spring in on the vac. sec. on the carb.
