Fricken thing wont fall out of a tree. Had it tuned down to 10.72 last season/fall before we put car away with 16% convertor slippage, so i put the new 4.56 in to get this tank moving better and cut down on convertor slip.
First pass today/of the season, 11.04...WTF, felt like it spun, green track, no biggie. second pass dropped down to normal race psi...first pass i went 1lb higher just to see if it'd take it, it did'nt so back to 10psi. Second pass 11.03...now i'm hot. Alright, let's eliminate any timing/advance issues by just locking out distributor, so locked it out and checked it prior to moving it and it was showing 40*....so we pulled it back down to 34* where it was supposed to be...it starts alright, but has a little step it has to take before engine starts spinning.
well, they called the gamblers race, so i ran up there, and now i'm lost ET wise since if locking distributor was going to fix my problem i did'nt know how my RT would be effected of ET...so i threw a 10.99 on the window, my guy red lit, ran it out and it did a 10.94 and picked up 1mph. pulled plug and it's still black...i'm already down to 68/76 jetting, so something is a miss there.
Ended up going on to win the gambler, so that was nice, but i'm so tired of everytime i goto the track it goes slower...i'm losing my fricken mind LOL!!
Carb is getting sent off to Pro System after next weekends first points race, then i'll bolt that on to see what it does if anything, then i'll look back to the timing and see what i see, probably install a know good dizzy and check it out.
If that does'nt do a thing, going to send original cam i built this engine with the first time back to Bullet and have them fix it from the carniage that happened and stick that back in....if it STILL does'nt get back into the mid 10's where it should be, then this convertor is coming out and a different one installed...man this is pizzing me off

hey man i feel ya, I had a crappy day also. I had the ever slowing car, ran a couple of passes without the bottle..ok little stumble out of the hole, i had changed to colder plugs since i run the bottle most of the time, so i spray it in qualifying for the quick 8, chevelle in front of me runs a 9.5 something (cool as hell just about on the bumper, 3600 pounds guy runs some nostalgia class)
so i decide i need to know what it will run , 9.46 i think it was...im like wtf? it ran a 9.29 on a foot brake, so first round i get a bye, run it out to 1/8 and shut it off, picked up a bit since i started at 30 % 2nd round....the damn trans brake decides not to hold, didnt roll when i let go of the brake pedal, but hit the gas and it jumps foward out of the lights...friggin red light, try it on the return road works fine, works fine in the pits, made a few more hits but no better times, more % out of the hole but it goes slower......finally just put it on the trailer , oh yeah on top of all that the rear end is making some bad noises at the big end when i lift

You guys have me nervous about getting my car back out! lol. It's still down for a paint job and a new cam, i'm a lot slower than you guys, but hopefully it gets better for you. If racing was easy everyone would be doing it

If the plugs are black with that jetting, something isn't right. Do you still run power valves? I'm running 78/78 in my little 383, 800 cfm with no valves. I just bought a new 850 Holley, and have lots of troubles getting it tuned for my sons car. After I took it down to remove the power valves, I couldn't get it to seal around the power valve cavity. Had to file the body to get the gasket to seal without really cranking down on the bowl screws. Still don't have it tuned right. I may just put the 800 back on it, that belongs to my brother. The 96 bird made the maiden today. Car works real good, and drives good now. My son made 6 passes today before he broke the throttle cable. The motor needs a LOT more cam, just have an old blue racer cam in it now. The track wasn't too bad today for being so green. Took a couple of hours to get some rubber down, but it came in pretty good.

I run the front PV since i still street drive it, blocked the back one. I think of all the times this carb has been apart over the yrs changing/tweaking for this or that, it's entirely possible something is warped. Every engine i've had to this point (smaller all the way around) was in the low 80's jetwise, and now this one is in the 60's. I was told an effeicent motor will do this, use a smaller jet since it'll pull it's own fuel through as opposed to a less than effeicent one that needs the bigger jet/orifice to let more "fall through it"
I dunno, figure that's a cheap place to start and probably needed so Pat at PS is getting my business so we'll see what happens. I may siwtch this over to a crank trigger ignition, this will be my 3 msd pro billet distributor in 6 yrs if i have to get a new one...guts still look okay, end play does'nt seen excessive, but something is going on somewhere....just hoping i done have to drop thousands figuring it out

That sucks I think you will be happy with the Pro Systems carb. Are your valve springs ok?

Well, i'm cancelling my entries into the St Louis race next month and doing what is probably been the main problem since day one. After next weekend, carb is still being sent to Pro System, just cuz, heard too many good things about them, carb is old, been raced for yrs and is due for a true professional go through/carb tuning. At the same time i'm pulling the heads off and sending them to Spiere racing Heads in Hays Kansas and letting Chad go through them and tell me just how focked up they are.
Last yr he made the offer to eat the labor and i pay for parts due to all the troubles i kept having, so i called and talked with him today to find out his lead time since i dont want this to be a 1-2 month turn around. He says he'll make the time to get'em in and get'em out for me.
Lil refresher, second jackazz that built current version after first jackazz screwed up my version thought he could wringe out more power, since i had to get all new parts anyhow, i figured, well, what the heck, go ahead. so he did...he hogged these 100% cnc'd heads out, supposedly picked up and extra 30cfm...putting them right at the 335cfm@.700 mark and he said low lift #'s came up too, then ordered a comp POS cam.. should put my foot down when he said Comp Cam...but i kept an open mind......dyno, oh yeah, she made alot more on the pump than the first version...but in reality, this thing wont fall out of a tree for real life numbers where it counts. Alot of other racers and shop owners could'nt understand where/how this guy found enough material to eat in the heads to get the flow he said he got outta them since they've never been able to get that much and still have them work right.
Then when the shop dyck told me he kept having to have the heads welded, re welded since he was going through runners and water jackets, i thought, oh great, here we go....so i've know in the back of my head these were probably the main problem area, but have been looking elsewhere instead. time to take it head on and see WTF....but i told the guy that will make these heads right, call me with an estimate since at this point i will just buy a different seet of heads and send them to him to have gone through if it's going to cost alot more to fix these stupid things. i'm still debating if at the same time i want to get my other cam fixed and throw it in while it's apart, or try this POS comp cam to see what it'll do....just pizzes me off, but i know when i get'er all bolted back up, it should be the engine is used to be if not more...so it will hopefully be worth it...but if it keeps in line of going slower each time i get the car out, if i get a 12 second time slip...i'll drive this POS into a tree

sounds like that guy may have screwed up your heads.
this is why i only trust 2 places right now to do heads. I TRUST NO LOCAL SHOPS FOR HEAD WORK.
next place i would send them is to brian at TEA. you can rest assured he will let you in on the honest truth and if he can fix them or not.
but first....
i would get that carb worked (those guys are AWESOME) and see how she does. if its still all out of wack, i would look at the heads next.
i put a set of cnc heads on my LS1 car that looked great, but the car was down ~50rwhp from where it should have been. did not run good, either.

Everybody on another drag racing forum kept saying heads, heads, heads last yr when we got this put together the second time and it was having troubles due to the fact it sounds like this dyck just went hog wild with the diegrinder and carbide...he's got a flow bench, "says" he kept checking, yada yada...but after talking to several shops that use these basically same spec heads for the series motors they build, none of them could believe the flow numbers i was telling them the heads supposedly flowed..so that in itself speaks volumes, esspecially since most of these other shops do more than just the typical dirt tracking BS most machine shops do...they cater to a higher standard that we drag racers and higher series roundy round customers expect....i got burnt, learned an expensive lesson, luckily found a few people nationally known and bragged on to work with and they've offered some help in light of past issues...
i will say, in this day and age, last year i was extrememly flattered with the outpouring of support, offer of help as far as labor goes, and many many offers on parts and steeply discounted or sometimes free...blew me away and i guess this is why i love drag racing...burn eachother when your lined up, help each other out anyway possible outside the staging lanes. I've got no problem spending money, i just hate when i get the smoke and mirror show from focking hacks...next engine, I'll wait the 2-3 months it will take since in the big picture, it'll still cost as much initally, but will save many thousands later. I was just trying to get out at the tail end of last season to tune the car so i could hit this season running, kinda worked since it's won one already first outting, but here we are, basically breaking it completely apart again...only nice thing...it's all on top of the engine...no more pulling engine/tranny like last yrs ridiculous pull fest

LOL!!Seriously though, i really cant blame anybody but me. Was in a hurry, shop i really wanted to get into is booked months out 90% of the time, and there's a reason for it, just wish i woulda settled down, waited for them and i would'nt be having these issues. The fact every problem i had with this combo being a turd dispite dyno garbage numbers, it all basically lead back to the heads, i just had spent sooo much focking money last yr trying to right all the wrongs people were screwing me on i did'nt want to admit, maybe not admit, but i was searching for faster, easier, and cheaper remedies to the problem, but the word HEADS was always the main topic of conversation, so now that the season is young, i have the means i'm going to get these things sorted out and hopefully get back to square one again...if it only wants to run 10.60's, fine, i can live with that...not happy one bit, but at least it'll get me near the mph i'm looking for so stripe driving is easier.
On the bright side, we're still heading to Gateway for the world street challenge, only now the trip will be cheaper, we reserved a hotel with room service, will have zero stress except praying they dont run out of beer LOL!! so it'll all work out in the end...plus it'll buy me some time to finish my trailer at a slower pace since work is just stupid nutz right now...sunday...SUNDAY i got 33 calls for estimates, then followed that up with 12 today...obviously my crew wont be able to get to them all, so going to start bringing in subs...rather get a small piece of the pie, than no piece at all.
gotta pay for this junk somehow LOL!!! but we're gonna put a BBC in the works and hopefully in the next yr or so, this migrain enducing sbc will be reserved for a back up, or we'll juice the snot out of it and see how she frags so i get the last laugh...unless she walls me and totals the car LOL!!Supreme Member

ultimately nozzzz was the plan, but when a guy has to keep back pedaling just to get it to run half way decent and then find out ya gotta go backwards to fix a problem, then find out you have to go a few steps even further back, it tends to blow through all the toy/frivalous money pretty quickly
car-fixer, dont think for a second i wont do that. I have plenty of buddies with baby bottles and plate systems laying around, BIL has a fogger intake ready to go and just needs the 500 jets put in....i'll blow this beeotch sky high and not give it a second thought..kinda force my hand into building the pig block...i promise, once all this crap i'm having done does'nt produce mid 10's...we're gonna do whatever it takes to surpass the mid 10's and i will give two hoots about what happens getting there. i already said i want this thing to wheelie like an outlaw, and if i can get it on tape or pics, and then car comes down, blasts the wall and get totaled...i honestly would'nt be upset for a second. it would be a fun story to tell, and it would make me stop vesting in this junk and go straight to a digger to make my job easier on race day
mark my words, clip this post...if my junk is'nt running mid 10's when i put it back together, i will be sure to get a vid clip of trying to blow it up intentially on juice and/or wrecking the car; that my freinds is a promise you can take to the bank

rotflmao......I know that fealing, i dont think you will need the 500 hp jets, just put some 225 or 275 jets in and hold the hell on, it will probably skip right over the 9's
However when you decide to spray it like that make sure the belts are tight, we dont want you hurt, the engine and car, thats just money but people are not replaceable

that's a wicked looking set up
S/C will take too much $$ and fab time to blown this up, jucie baby, juice LOL!! one day i'd like to get a digger, throw this in the back corner, put some larger meats and then build a really cool door car out of it...one day...but when i have soemthing that does'nt run right it bugs me, i kinda forgot about it this winter, and now it's in my face again first weekend out. Worst part, and just about every car nut/racer is typically the same way, when confronted with a problem you know is fixable...money becomes no object and parts are thrown at it quicker than a auto store clerk can give you wrong parts for your daily driver LOL!!
i may be suprised with having the heads worked over by a true professional head guy, it may run better than it did the first time, i dunno. we'll see, i just wanna get back in the saddle and race dang it, not racing my junk last yr killed me, ran other peep's stuff all yr, but it's just not the same, and i've never done well in other's cars either so then you get the emotional beat down on race day too LOL!!

I've only been 10.00 so your stuff will probably make me wet my pants
then you'd snap a picture and put it on the web for all to see, i'd turn to a life of a bum/alcohol...all because my junk did'nt run right and i ran somebody elses faster 3rd gen

faster thirdgen....psssh it's all 14.2 at 92mph every pass, it's like a bracket car
I do hope you get it sorted out, my buddy was just burned on his blown sbc powered ford notch by a shop and now I'm finishing the build for him, so I know all too well about getting promised one thing and actually receiving something completely different.

I'll probably be out that ways in a month or so, have to see when I'll get put to work at the house out there. PM me out your cell and I'll give you a week or two notice for sure.

man you guys are rough, that 69 belongs to a friend of mine, he was running e85 in it at the track, intake temps before, over 300, with e85, 95 degrees, on an 80 degree day! he ran mid 10's but is having trans problems.....again
I had to run him in the second round of quals....I had a bad pass for me but spanked by over a second, that beast weighs 4000 pounds too, and if the e85 works out, the a/c will work too, its not hooked up yet
