New Wheels!

got these in the mail today! Billet Specialties "Street Lite" 15x10 with 6.5" backspacing. makes it sit in the fender like a 15x8 with a 4.5" backspacing but is actually a 10" wide wheel...very nice pieces! these will be wrapped in a 275/60/15 Mickey Thompson ET Street Radial. the fronts will be ordered after payday

the pictures just don't do these justice...these things are amazing. the only possible problem with clearance for these is around the bumpstop area...that may need to be "massage", though there is clearance...like 1/4-1/2" or so...we'll see after i get them wrapped up with the new tires.

Re: New Wheels!

currently i'm running an aerospace components rear drag brakes with a 4 piston caliper, but they're not meant for the street. i haven't decided what i'm gonna do since i'm thinking about driving this thing around some...anyone think it'd be too much for these brakes if i drove, say 60 miles a week? if not, then i guess i'll be doing something different...maybe stock iron calipers on a stock rotor...

the fronts are still stockers, but i'm considering a c4 upgrade. i don't need much more, just a little.

Re: New Wheels!

Do the rims clear the lower control arms ok, and do you have tubular ones or boxed? I have been thinking of going to the same rear rim from my current 1x8 set up, please post finished pictures and what needed adjustments were made to make them fit.

Thanks

Re: New Wheels!

i'm mounting up a set of these as we speak for a mustang guy, i really wasn't a big fan of how they looked on his notch, but it was the owners choice. I've been running 6.5bs with a much larger tire without too much issue, really debating just mini-tubbing the car this year anyways since I'm 30% there already.

Re: New Wheels!

i think these will end up being the f-body wheel of choice. radialtireking is running them on his car and they look amazing.

as far as the rear brakes are concerned...what ya'll think about this type of setup?

I have a set on my car and also have Aerospace brakes on the back and there is about .050 clearance from the rim to the caliper. Did you fit the rim yet?

Re: New Wheels!

also these will fit like a 15x8 with 5.5bs not 4.5 just fyi

you're going to add 1" of rim width to both the outside and the inside to make it 6.5bs, etc

Re: New Wheels!

hmmm...8" wide wheel has 4.5" backspacing, that's 3.5" of "front spacing"
8" - 4.5" = 3.5"
10"wide wheel has 6.5" backspacing, that's 3.5" of "front spacing"
10" - 6.5"= 3.5"

6.5" - 4.5" = 2
10" - 8" = 2

seems to me, the extra 2" is on the inside of the wheel, and that a 15x10 with 5.5" backspacing would be like adding 1" on each side of a 15x8 with 4.5" backspacing, moving the outside lip 1" outward, which is what we're all trying to avoid (obviously)

if they fit like 15x8 with 5.5" backcpacing, it'd be a 15x10 with 7.5" backspacing...there ain't no inch more of space to play with back there, lol!

steve, can you post up any pictures of your inner fender mods for me? i know the bumpstop mounts are going to have to be cut out...

lol! just noticed that... you need to handle that immediately!
my 15x10 5.5 bs welds and 28x10.5 hoosiers took extensive work to fit- i cant imagine how much work would be involved in scooting them in another inch!

Re: New Wheels!

i ran a set of 295/50/16's on a stock iroc wheel years ago, and i had to make a lot of room for that combo...so i'm thinking the only real area that'll need attention now is the area around the bumpstop...that'll need to go otherwise it'll hit the inside of the wheel if the suspension articulates too much, lol...

yeah, i got some bigger jackstands to put under it, i was just being lazy...i'll fix it before the grinder/bfh comes out, don't you worry!

hehe, heck yeah! they're a little heavier, which i expected since they're designed to be a "dual purpose" wheel. these are ~ 5lbs heavier each than my 15x8 m/t's

Re: New Wheels!

i did, and i am putting it towards getting married, but i'm making more money off the car then what we need and i'm working on alot of deals to get more stuff for the car. i'm also trading work for parts. the parts i don't need, i sell, etc. i bought her the ring a couple of weeks ago and we're budgeting for the wedding and stuff too, but i'm also trying to get this thing done too. i also sold my firebird, which is paying for the upgrades on the white car as well.

you didn't think i was getting out of cars did you? haha...i just had a strict deadline for when i wanted to get the ring to her, so i started selling stuff to help expodite the purchase...but it would have all been for sale sooner or later anyhow cause i'm going ls1.

Re: New Wheels!

You are right about the 8" rim with 4.5 bs having the same front spacing as a 10" with 6.5 bs. But your forgeting the tire. Using a 10" tire you will have 1" overhang on each side of the rim making the 8" rim act like a 10" rim with 5.5 bs.

Thats why he said that the rims act the same.

Re: New Wheels!

oh...either way i'm gonna beat the crap outta the inner fender and i'll make 'em fit, lol!

what i was talking about initially was the relation of the outer wheel lip to the inside of the fender lip.

Re: New Wheels!

I made a post up in the drag forum I believe of ALL the hammering/cutting/etc I did, asked to have that and my "how to assemble a moser 9" both stickied, but unfortunately neither was, YET these questions pop up all the time. I believe the thread title was how to tuck 28x12.50 slicks with 6.5bs or similar. I plan on running 10.5W tires next season possibly, so I'll be cutting/moving even more

billet specialties street lites
greg welds new street star
centerline has their new line of competition street/strip wheels (and has FINALLY come back down on the Telstar if anyone is looking for a good looking wheel on a budget, $119 for 15x4 and $139ish or so for a 15x8!)

Re: New Wheels!

why is running the aerospace brakes on the street a problem? i cant imagine any trouble with the calipers, so i would have to assume pads are the concern? Either way, do like i do and punish them, no way to know what the weak link is or what will need to be beefed up until you ruin something, and then you know what needs to be addressed. Playing it safe is for sissies, find the weak link and help future hot rodders out

the fronts aren't strong enough to handle street abuse and the car is going back to a dual purpose car instead of a strip only car...and i wanted to go back to a 10" wide rear wheel, i love the way it spreads the tread out and really looks awesome.

you know, i guess i just always though that since it wasn't a vented rotor it'd have problems, but now that i think about it, i'm not really sure why i shouldn't run them. i probably oughtta get new pads and possibly rotors though...does areospeed sell those? the rotors are two piece though, and i don't need the hat part...

Does their website say anything, i would have to assume they offer them if they sell the assembled components, one thing you could do though to save money down the road, once you have direct replacement brand new rotor, look into some mud packing catalogs and get some dimensions, i'd be willing to bet dollar for dollar they will also have a direct replacment rotor at a much cheaper price.

Re: New Wheels!

Those rims look great, I'm considering getting a set of those for my car. The other rim I'm thinking about is Holeshot Sunflares.

Re: New Wheels!

those sunflares look great too! this wheel selection actually took longer than any other wheel selection i've made. and my fiance had a lot of say cause i wanted her to like the wheels. she loves 'em and i love 'em and i can't wait to get them on so i can see how they look on the car.

THIS is just one of the first example i pulled up, but you get the idea, you dont HAVE to go directly to the manufacturer you bought the original parts from, alot of times these guys use a standard size/bolt pattern so multiple vendors make/sell the same parts for a much lower price than the original manufacturer you bought the parts from sell's their "direct replacement" parts for. And dont let them tell you the stuff they make is the only thing that will work, most of the time it's just a line to keep you brand loyal.

[quote=mw66nova;3949640]the fronts aren't strong enough to handle street abuse and the car is going back to a dual purpose car instead of a strip only car...and i wanted to go back to a 10" wide rear wheel, i love the way it spreads the tread out and really looks awesome.

umm...well jeff moyer drives on the street with them and runs 8.40's in the 1/4.

Re: New Wheels!

looks like you are gonna be hacking some more off to get the tires to spin.

i wouldnt run the solid rotors on the street.
i had a set and the car would always smell hot after hard braking and at times you could hear the rotors cooling. "tink, tink" sound.
never ate pads, or warped a rotor. always stopped fine. i eventually sold them and upgraded to a vented rotor. its only an extra pound per corner according to aerospace. i went for piece of mind.

Re: New Wheels!

Re: New Wheels!

Do you have enough room for when the car is on odd angles. For instance does the driver rear tire have room when the passenger front tire is 4" off the ground.
