Drag Mufflers???
Got the new 406 in, w/ Hooker 1 3/4" headers. Looking to run "bullets" of some sort. Any rec's???
I'm just looking to keep it short & sweet, (quiet enough to pass tech).

borla xr1's are quiter but are 3x the cost of dynomax. moroso spiralflows are like $52/ea and make horsepower and give a deeper tone. id go with the morosos. just my $.02

Re: Drag Mufflers???
I run Magnaflow race mufflers. I run the bigger oval ones because I wanted it a bit more quiet. These are not a street muffler.
The mufflers are stainless so they'll cost a little more than other ones. The are a straight flow through design. There are no baffles or louvers inside the tube. The center tube has holes in it which allow the exhaust pulses to travel through to the outer core where the sound is deadened.
Before I had the mufflers, I was running open exhaust and needed to put ear plugs in just to fire the engine up. Now I don't even need ear plugs going down the track and I can hear every little noise the car and engine make.
I run 2 of these

There are links on my web pages to videos on Streetfire. Most of my videos are in car so you can hear what I hear.

Re: Drag Mufflers???
yea a good idea...my friend runs 3.5" ones on his 94 z. they are a great sounding muffler, but much quieter than a bullet by comparison.

Half a second is alot depending on how fast you are going. I have seen 16 sec cars gain/lose half a second the same night with no changes. I dont think the mufflers are the only thing that helped you that night.

Re: Drag Mufflers???

The mufflers now have turnouts on them and I now have a hanger at the front to help support the weight. You can just see the rubber hanger behind the outlet in the second picture. The mufflers are pushed right up to the floorboards and have no problems with ground clearance. The first elbow coming off the collectors has scrapped coming out of the garage but has never made contact loading the car on the trailer. It did have some clearance problems getting onto an alignment rack.
This exhaust system adds roughly 45 pounds to the car (not counting the headers). Those headers are 2-1/4" primary tubes into 4" slip on collectors. The rest of the piping is 4" and the muffler is 4" in/out.

This is probably the best picture showing the car at rest and the turnouts on the exhaust

i was at the track on a wednsday night and the best time i had was a 13.0 at 104, 2 days later i went back only changing the exhaust and right off the trailer i went a 12.627 at 109 and i ended up making 5 12.5 passes, if it wasnt the mufflers then i dont know what it was

Re: Drag Mufflers???
All the flowmaster hater will laugh, but i've run these 40 series dumping in front of rear axle for years, and with every engine, i've NEVER seen any gain anywhere on the track by pulling the exhause off the car...so i dont, the open header thing is about as played out as double hump heads

Re: Drag Mufflers???
With a good race muffler, the only gain you may see by removing the exhaust is gained from the weight saving. There are still restrictive mufflers that will see big gains if removed. Race mufflers have come a long way in 20 years. Open exhaust isn't required any more for performance.
I have noticed that some of the noisiest cars at the track are the slower ones running open headers.

Re: Drag Mufflers???
haha couldnt agree more ^^^
ive run 40 series mufflers on 12.00 and 10.50 motor cars. bullets are waste of space and weight...dynomax ultraflows are sweet too. IMO

Re: Drag Mufflers???
My only gripe with bullet mufflers is the 3 freinds at the track that bought and used them, I actually though their cars were quieter open headered....seriously, seemed like alot of money and time wasted for zero sound muffling

Re: Drag Mufflers???
yea i ran a pair of 3 inchers and it was rediculous. i liked the sound itself, but the volume was stupid. open headers has the purpose of less weight.
running mufflers that do something let you hear your valvetrain, etc way better to tune and what not.
flowmaster 1 chambers do it pretty well too.

I run 3.5 inch Borla XR-1's. I ran the bullets for years and was tired of the packing falling out everytime I removed the exhaust. The Borlas are expensive but I will never need another set of them.
The sound is identical beween the Borlas and Bullets.
