350 with good compression, upwards around 11 to 1 if you can with aluminum heads. 10-10.3 with Iron.. Good hydraulic roller would be nice but flat tappet could get it done.
195-200cc heads, single plane should do it. Look to turn 6600 rpm or so. Good suspension with matching converter for the combo it should do 11's.
If you can do a stroker 383, i'd build it for the extra torque to help get off the line. Cast cranks are cheap enough and will hold. Just need good light pistons, good rod bolts and good rods.
I forget his user name, but there is a guy with a solid flat tappet cammed, canfield 195cc headed 350 running deep 11's on here. Great combination of parts.

Re: motor ideas for a 11 sec et
I had a 355 with 10.72:1 compression and was almost there with a 12.09 and a lousy 3500 density altitude. With better air I would have been there. My heads were an older set Dart Pro One 200cc heads.
With my new motor I will blow right through the 12 second mark and be deep into the 11's. AFR 195 heads, 11.1:1 compression. You do not need big heads but good flowing heads such as AFR.

First off, how heavy is the car? Whats the typical air quality and elevation at the track you are running at?

never really weighed it but is all stock im doing some gutting this winter and idk elevation but i race in Cincinnati at edgewater and so your saying the 221 would not be worth it?

Re: motor ideas for a 11 sec et
I think 221's would likely be a good canidate for a retrofit solid roller and possible high 10's. Cinci is lower elevation than my hometown pittsburgh track and I ran well into the 11.4's without much effort on a 383 AFR 195 cc head motor with a fairly aggressive but very streetable hydraulic roller.
Same setup on a 355 would easily have done 11's with abit more gear and converter due to less torque than the 383.
If you can get the 221's for a good deal, i'd go solid flat tappet and let it eat. May end up well into the lower 11's so thats good.

i could get a set of 221 that have been ported more for about 1000 and i was gonna run about 305 advertised duration and about 670 lift with about a 4000 to 4500 stall so you feel that could get the job done?

No reason that setup wouldnt run 10's with a cam of that size and those heads if ported well, and a matching intake thats been ported to match the flow of the heads.
I'd go 4500-5000 stall on a setup that large. Definately overkill for 11's but a strong combo nonetheless.
Like I said, you can get there with 195cc heads and a cam closer to .550 lift and advertised duration around 280-286.

Orr89ocZ do you mind sharing cam specs from you old 383? Also were the AFR's the eliminators or older version? what was the compression? Thanks for the info.

Re: motor ideas for a 11 sec et
my cam was a hydraulic roller. 286/306 adv. 230/245 at .050" .603/.613" lift with 1.6 rockers. Basically these are comp magnum high lift lobes. 109 lsa installed on a 108 intake centerline. I think its a very nice cam. I'd be tempted to run abit less exhaust duration split but keep lift about the same to see if that helps build more low-mid range torque but it may cap off rpm range abit. I peaked at 6200 or so rpm but it was fairly flat from 6000 to 6600 rpm. Wide duration split helps that rev range.
Ported stealth ram intake on top of AFR 195 eliminator heads. valve springs setup to match the cam, 165lbs on the seat. 11 to 1 compression. It was a healthy setup.
3450lb car with me in it on drag rims/slicks which are 75lbs lighter overall than stock 16" Iroc wheels.
Easy 11.47 at 118.x my best ET. 60 foots were always around 1.55 to sometimes 1.60 or so. 3600 stall 3.42 gear so definately had more in it with more stall and gear but I sprayed a 150 hit so 3.42s and 3600 worked well.
Other guys here that have gotten into the mid higher 11's on less cam than I did with same or similar heads. A good mid 500's lift cam and 230 deg duration on intake should get it done in a 3400 lb ride.
I like the roller cams for valvetrain reliability with todays oils, and smooth operation. no break in, and better lobe profiles for todays good heads. Most heads flow well in the mid high .500's range so use it to your advantage. Heavier cost up front but worth it in my opinion.

Re: motor ideas for a 11 sec et
Is this a track only car, or will it be a driver as well?
Reason I ask, my very mild 350 goes 12.2's, but then again it is super light. I am hoping for mid 11's after dumping the 416 heads, and going to some 195 AFR's.

I went 11.79 @ 118 this summer with a 1.53 60ft. Shortblock is all stock 1970 LT1. 10.5 compression. Dart pro1 215 heads with some bowl work. Sollid Roller 267int./273exh.Dur, 0.566 in./0.578 in Lift. Converter was suppose to be 4000rpm, but is flashing @5400 on the Transbrake.
