Battery relocation questions
So I did some searching and did not find the answer i was looking for...
I am in the process of relocating the batt and would like to know what people did for a power source in the front of the of the car. Did you guys purchase some sort of disribution block. Also where did you mount it? I already have a ground strap that goes from the head to the firewall. Is that enough or do i need another strap.
Also what did people do for batt disconnect in the rear of the car. Has anybody used or made any removeable keys for the batt in street strip cars?

Re: Battery relocation questions
When a battery is relocated from the OEM location in any vehicle.
It must have a master disconnect switch mounted at the rear.
Off must be clearly marked.
If mounted as a push/pull, push has to be off. (for street use it's common to mount the switch inside the car like this then have a removable rod going out the back)
Switch can not be plastic and can not be keyed.
Switch must be wired into the positive battery cable
When turned off, it must disconnect all power from the car and kill the engine. (If incorrectly wired, the alternator will backfeed the system and keep the engine running)
Battery must be isolated from the drivers compartment. In our third gens, that means installing it in an approved battery box or installing it behind a firewall. Simply stuffing it into the spare tire compartment will fail tech inspection. Marine battery boxes will also fail.
I run a ford type start solenoid and take any battery source I require off the solenoid. My battery source then feeds a master circuit panel for all the electrics. I run a simple relay to the alternator field wire to kill the alternator when the power is turned off.

Re: Battery relocation questions
Can anyone recommend the best specification and source for cable to run the the battery in the boot to the starter solenoid?

I plan on getting a cable kit from jegs.com and a push pull rod for the kill switch.

Re: Battery relocation questions
I like welding wire (like that used for a welder's ground strap), it's a higher grade copper, more, thinner strands so it's more flexible then normal battery cable and tends to have a lower resistance/carries the current better.

Re: Battery relocation questions
its good wire, but also keep in mind it generally has a low temp insulation, so it will melt/burn if its close to the engine/exhaust heat

I was thinking ths one sounds good:
25 FT 1/0 ga GAUGE SGX copper battery power wire cable

Re: Battery relocation questions
Stephen, In the case of a one wire alternator, whats the best method to address this...if hooked up with a separate wire to the "on" side of the cut-off switch, it will continue to run the car when switched off. Hooked up to the battery side or "off" side of the switch will allow the car to die when switched off but leaves that power wire to the alternator "live" running thru the chassis up to the alternator. This is how mines wired right now and I know its not right and want to make it compliant, constant duty solenoid??

I actually left the factory battery cables in place and ran the positive from the battery to the original cable, just bolted them together. I did it this way because it was the easiest/neatest way I could think of. The stock cables already had the appropriate lugs on them and i didn't have to worry about fitment issues. Ran the factory ground cable from the block to the front frame rail. I have a moroso on/off switch mounted directly to the bumper and used the power cable for a car stereo system as the alternator wire and ran it back to the switch. Used a kit from jacobs for the wiring and sealed box.

Re: Battery relocation questions
I was thinking of using one of those on/off switched that are built into the battery connector.
Then I would just run the cable forward and splice it to the original positive battery terminal connector.
My plan is to run the positive wire from the battery, under the carpet, thru the firewall to the engine compartment.
I have ordered a BMR Fabrication mount the relocates the battery to the boot where the spare tyre is usually located.
