It really depends on engine modifications. When I still had a 700R4 in my car I ran out of track before hitting OD manually or leaving it in drive. Leaving it in drive may help consistancy since the car should shift at the same RPM every time but usually won't get the best ET. I now have a TH350 and manually shift every gear at 6400 rpm. No early or late shifts.

87 IROC-Z Pro ET Bracket Race Car and knocking on the SuperPro ET class
383 stroker (carbed) with double hump cast iron heads and pump gas
Best ET on a time slip: 11.857
Best corrected ET: 11.163
Best MPH on a time slip: 117.87
Best corrected MPH: 126.10
Best 60 foot: 1.662

Racing at 3500 feet elevation but most race days it's over 5000 feet density altitude!

When I used to race my truck I always raced in "D". I won more races with the truck than I do with the IROC.

When you are racing go ahead and pull it into regular (D). I you are always getting on it and racing in OD then you will wear out the overdrive sprag. I would only tap it up if you want to hold the gear a little bit longer otherwise just the tranny it shift itself. I use mine to tap it up if I am really racing because my tranny won't shift at redline it shifts about 4500 or so rpm and I want to shift out of first about 5200 then go to second at about 4700 or so.

With the 700R4 there is a huge gap between 1st and 2nd gear. 1st gear is 3.08:1 and 2nd is 1.90:1. Because of this, your RPM's will drop drastically shifting from 1st to 2nd.... so much that you need to shift at like 5500 or even 5750 if your car can handle it. That way, when you hit 2nd, your RPM's will drop, but you will still be inyour power band. This is definetly the downfall of the 700R4.... it dies out in 2nd so much.

When I'm racing someone I like to have it in D. Half the time I forget, though. Doesn't really matter though, since I loose most the time anyways.

I've come to realize that I'm gonna have this car till it pukes for good, b/c I'll never be able to bring myself to sell it.

How do you make it shift or not shift when you want it to?

I used a G-Tech one night and alway got my best times off it leaving it in drive and leaving off idle and then mashing the gas. Letting the car shift itself if it shifts where you want, it will be alot more consistent than shifting yourself. Holding the brake and bringing the revs up ony creates tire spin and lost time. My auto shifts at 5200.
