Taking the T/A to the track for the first time

I'm taking my 85 T/A to the strip for the first time tonight. 3.27 posi, all free mods done, cold air kit, gutted convertors, and Hooker cat-back. Might put on the drag radials too. I've been racing for 10 years. Any guesses on what kind of times I'll run? I'll post the time slip tomorrow. I hope it will beat my old Mustang, best time 14.17 @ 99 mph... If not, well more mods next month.

I had an 83 TA with a 305 TBI, auto trans, stock gears, no other mods and it ran 15.67 best in good weather with my shinny son driving it. I would run 2 tens slower due to weight disadvantage. Normally it would run around 16 flat at 86 MPH.

Well I'm back, I didn't think it was such a bad night considering.

time slip follows:

reaction:0.6013
60 ft: 2.1766
330 ft: 6.2880
1/8 et: 9.6951
1/8 mph: 72.10
1/4 et: 15.2481
1/4 mph: 87.27

1st run was a 15.2508, so I know the car is consistant. Any advice on what to do next?

Hey, not to bad! DO you have a LG4 or LB9 engine? Also by your 60' time it seems your spinning a little bit so I would recommend some LCA's and/or panhard bar. Then headers would be a good idea. Or if you want to tear into the engine cam and 1.6 RR's. But if you beef up the suspension you should either get close or in the 14's.
If you have a LB9 engine you will be able to get where you "old Mustang" was with a little hwlp from your friends.
Good Luck!

Try some headers and a y-pipe. i have a stock 84 t/a with the L69. It has edelbrock headers and y pipe, no cat and a dynomax cvx. No a/c or emissions crap either. 3.73 and the 700r4, and it runs 14.80's. The exhaust system picked me up from a 15.31 to 14.80s.

I'm new to drags and my 83 Berl w/ LG4 pulled 1/4 87.4 mph at 16.1. How come there is such a difference in the et's given my car was slighlty quicker? There are no other details on the timeslips.

nemisis, it's possible you have a problem on the bottom end of the track. MAYBE you have the only berlinetta ever made that has traction problems?

LOL I don't think it is the only one. Based on the calculators it seems to be running at around 180 - 190 hp. The only noticeable mods are no/cat or ac and twin mufflers. It seems to be pushing into HO territory The locals at the track reckoned that given the track conditions it should have been pulling around 15.8. Am giving it another shot this weekend with a 14" open element installed, will be interested to see what effect that has, definitely some sotp improvement.

I have the lb9, and I'm probably going to do headers and y-pipe next, and the slow 60ft is probably because I have an open rear, and didn't want the tire spin, so I was launching at about 1800 rpm on street radials. No tire spin, but not a whole lot of get up and go out the hole either. Has anyone seen the complete cam/lifter/spring package from Summit for the old non-roller 305 TPI cars? They say they got 40 HP out of one with a cat-back and stage 2 chip. Sounds pretty shaky to me, since SLP only says 30 with their roller cam.

It's an Automatic, one question for everyone, I've seen most TA's that will only stall up to 1300 with the footbrake, and I was getting mine to go to about 1900. I just bought the car, and wouldn't think it had a stall in it, since the car was 100% stock when I bought it. Also, It will yank 2nd gear with considerable rubber every time. Is this normal for the 700r4? I have a Monte Carlo with the same tranny, and it just slides into 2nd.

Maybe the tranny in your T/A is in better shape than the one in the Monte. About the stall i am not sure, but i can bring mine up just over 1500 rpm and it is stock. When you launch do you have to ease in to the gas or can you just nail it?
