I had a 87 GTA with 215 HP and it ran 14.80's all the time, stock. They must be using a pro driver, NOT.

The track conditions it was tested at had to have something to do with that too.

I'm not sure, but I think Motor Trend usually tests cars on bad roads (i.e., poor traction). This was brought up earlier when the LS1 F-bodies came out. Most mags were getting 12's out of them, but Motor Trend could only get low 13's. They use pro drivers, just do the testing on a bad road. Probably to simulate 'real' street performance.

Oh, Motor Trend, the most pro-Ford magazine in the industry.

I've seen some tests where MT or C&D took a 5spd stang vs 350 TPI and got mid/high 15s out of both. That is pathetic. It's the roads they test on. They run on the street w/ 5th wheel type equipment, not on the track. They only got like a 13.9 out of a 6spd LS1 Z28 and that was heck alot more recent (I think they've improved their test conditions since the 80s), that should tell you something... BTW, HotRod ran a 13.3 w/ the exact same 98Z that MT tested...

LOL, I was in the doctors office reading a motor trend and they were testing a regular V8 Camaro, a Firebird Formula, and a mustang SVT cobra and the two F-Bodies wrecked the dapooter stang in performance even though its not even in the same price range as the F-bodies. They should have been put against a mustang gt. And it was a while back so i dont know if they were LT1's or LS1's. And they were saying its because the mustang has so much less cubes than the F-bodies. All i have to say to that is it aint our fault.

Oh yeah in case i didnt make it clear im talkin about 4th gen F-Bodies. LOL, i dont want anyone to think i think LT1's or LS1's came in 3rd gens.
Member
yea just until recently did the cobras actually start beating regular Z28s and TAs. especially considering the whole problem with the 99 cobras. the LT1 equipt f bodies were walking on the cobras but they still had the 5.0 until what 96?
back to subject i hate motor trend but i think it is a better idea to run a car with a good driver on a regular road and post those times instead of running at a track. it does make it more real world. which i like better than someone saying their car runs this at a track with slicks. well we are on a road and you have radials so no you dont run that here. Motor Trend likes to run tests in the desert. Why, I don't know. A lot of their tests they run in 100 degree heat and that definitely takes some power from the engine. For some reason Motor Trend can get a 7.3 0-60 time out of a 1999 160hp Honda Civic Si, but they can only get a 7.5 to 7.0 out of the 240hp IROCs and Firebirds.
