Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

I picked the wrong Moroso Pan. They make 2 types of aluminum pans..1 with a kick out along the pan rail. to keep oil from climbing the wall (the 1 I Have)
and one without the Fat Rail..like a reg pan rail..(the 1 I should have orderd to fit a reg small starter)
my pan below. see the cut out for the starter.. that Fat rail makes it so a reg small starter will not fit. I have 2 small starters..that do not fit into the cut out..sucks.

as for the clocking with the power master starter.. you can use lock tight. Like they say to in the Instructions ..they call for Blue... or like I will drill the face for a drift pin/solid roll pin/button head bolt. installed into the seam on the face. seen below drill for a 3/8"pin and tap it onto place..make sure its on/into the seam.. after you get it clocked the way ya want..

mine is clocked the way I want..now to set it up for the Pin install... or you can drill and tap and install a button head bolt..its one way to go.. to make sure it will Never come out of clocking..must be installed at the seem of the outer ring..

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

Those headers are very impressive. I'm excited to see how they fit in the car.

I made my own but I would have loved to buy a pair like that. The only way to do it I think is to have each header flange come off sepretly with the tube. Just like what you have, is the same thing I made for my bbc headers. All the tubes and flanges are separate and then go into a slip on collector.

nice headers very nice

My Ed Quay headers. All the tubes are separate. I can almost install the LH header without taking it apart. 2-1/4" primaries and 4" slip on collectors.

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

yes... Ea tube has It's own Flange. would Love not to cut the holes..but wanted the room and easy install or removal.. I have never installed a BBC in a 3rd gen.. it hit me one day last year..why do another small block...and did not even think of a LS..has everybody and there dog is doing that...with or without Turbos..theres just this thing..about a BIGBLOCK! cubes..power..and a lot of guys have done it..and So. I started looking into it..and after about 2 hrs of reading and looking at photos..I put all the small block stuff aside.. and Made the Decision to go big Block..

The headers..yes they are expensive (works of art) when set next to out of the Box Hooker headers with the same finish...but the cutting thing.. makes me Gag!! all in the name of Power! ya see I Looked at and watched dyno test of diff engines. and different sets of headers and you do make and lose power with tube size and RPM.. so now at this point do I want to go out under the car..or.. out of the front fender.. well .. Power and RPM with this eng I could do Either. so under the car it was..( I would have had to buy 2 new fenders to cut on) as I would not cut on OEM parts on My Car. that the world could see.. Just Me..

Back the the cutting... "Dry Heaves".. cut to seen from Ace Ventura..(Shes a man seen)
I did a mini tub.. so I can do this.. right? RIGHT..! its only small hole...removing LBS from the car thing..ya ya..thats the ticket..lol

and

after doing the cut to the engine bay..the bay is getting a total repaint in body color with gross amounts of Chrome and Billet.. Did I mention Gross amounts of chrome...

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

things in the Future.. fighting with the tranny install..Or.. HOW WE PLAN on fitting before the install...
will it be tight?? will I struggle to fit it between the collector's..stay tuned. Dan Lemon Tells me they fit / follow the frame under the car.. and fit TH400's so it should fit most GM trans...we are going to see... collector's are 3 1/2". going to cut outs..then back to what ever I Can get to fit. Single chamber mufflers..Or?

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

No cutting but not an exact fit in my car.

Second picture. RH header. Modifications to get them to fit in my car.
#2 cylinder is the upper inside tube to the collector. There's a dimple hammered in it to clear a starter bolt.
#4 cylinder, bottom outside into the collector. It has a big loop to go around suspension but the loop isn't big enough. There's a very large dent positioned to clear a suspension tube. From what I've see in a youtube video doing dyno testing, these types of dents do not affect performance.

The LH header is almost straight forward however I had to relocate the steering column on the firewall outward and upward slightly to clear the #5 primary tube.

All the tubes have EGT bungs welded into them but you would need 8 sensors for data logging. I installed an O2 bung on the top of #6 tube for monitoring O2 from a single cylinder. Mounting it in the collector would be better but with slip on collectors, you don't get a 100% seal around the tube. They could suck in air and throw the O2 reading off. Might not be bad enough but mounting the O2 on top of the tube also gives much better access to it for calibration.

The header evac tubes are capped off because I use a vacuum pump to keep the crankcase in a vacuum.

Merge collectors would be nice but they're not cheap.

Your headers/collectors taper inwards at the rear to follow the frame rails. That will make installation a lot easier.

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

when I Talk of the dyno testing and headers,, its tube size that makes the difference.. 1 7/8 hooker to a 2 1/8 when making power.. but yes a 2"+ tube with a dimple in it to clear a bolt or what have you is not going to hurt anything.. its the over all flow of a tube.. making over 850hp you will need a larger tube header..under 600 ya might get away with 1 7/8".. was not even looking at smaller tube headers..= the look of power..just no power..lol

as for the trans fitting..man I hope I don't have to fight anything..and it can all be done with a $60.000 tube bending mechine.. (buddys shop)

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

4:10AM just doing some starter motor set up.. did the paper clip teeth thing.. and set the billet flexplate on the engine.

set every thing up to the specs they wanted. only 1 shim needed.. the O ring shim on the body of the starter..pulling it back from the flexplate.. (0.059) used blue lock tight on the 2 clocking screws.. with red lock tight on the ring.. will do the drill and tap pin in the after noon..its late..

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

well going to see what tranny Dan recommends ..TH400 ? I don't think its even going to fit..with out 2 big rosebuds and a chunk of pipe. to get the collector moved over...lol dose the TH400 have more room on the pass side??

as above I don't think its going to give anymore room..
test in above pics are with a 700R4..
as I made the Decision to jump to a big block..and have close to $4000 in this this one below. they tell me it will hold up...but now it don't fit..lol. so.. ill order on Monday as long as Dan tells me it will fit..

looks like I can add another $4000 to another tranny..just need to know what one...shopping is fun!
could just order this unit.from summit...Just need to be sure of fitment...$2700 add another $1000 for converter

well if its going to be a th400
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/fti-th400-45
Or
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/tci-212506
will have to add about $500 to ea unit some with shipping charges../ parts needed.. then add a converter $1200 ball park
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/ati-401603/overview/
will chat with Dan..
fright charges on the units that have them run $119.. so its not to bad..the TCI unit is free shipping..

Since your going from the 700r4 to a th400. You will need a speed sensor to keep the stock speedometer. You also need a Dakota digital sgi-5e .

No..just know how to shop..and just started getting help from a few Manufacturers..
in the last few weeks have sold off a lot of parts I had for the small block.. and a lot of the other stuff I picked up over the last few years...just started opening boxes and getting set for the Big Block install..(could have built 2 Camaros)

My shop was getting full of boxes of parts..no room to do anything..picked up more shelving. and started filling them..

its a inexpensive this to do..and makes it rust proof.. and when done right/even like on some oil pans. looks fantastic.. on a black Camaro would look good.. cost is low enough you can do a eng block for $40 the have it machined after...lol

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

well Monday was a good day!

the new TH400 was Delivered. it was built and shipped so fast..I did not have time to upgrade to the SFI bellhousing.. have one on the way..ill install the bellhousing my self

had to check out the fitment and install my other upgrade parts..some just for looks (TCI governor cover)looks better then the stock cover.

making sure the headers all fit the Trans came with a deep cast pan..and the Collector flang was a snug fit.. but I was going to install a Moroso pan anyway..and the fit was a bit better..

this shot shows the room on the starter..no need for a Heat Shield..

room for the shift linkage on the driver side.. I did this TH400 with a Clean Neutral.. so I can shift into Neutral on the shut down side. with the revers pattern Valve body

to install the collecter on the passenger side.. ya have to remove the transbrake. first..(slips out and back in)
..
using the outlaw shifter in black out..with the 700R4 sift plate to work with the Th400. and the clean Neutral P/RN/1/2/3/N

Going to refinish the case..a lot of casting flash/bumps..I like a better / smoother finish on the trans body..this one might get a black Hammer tone finish.
takes about 3 hrs to get a trans case set up for a nice finish
700R4 case in a hammer tone..note the Gloss.. and finish

by the way this one is for sale...comes with converter trans brake billet parts to take 1000HP.and it does not use a Kickdown. BILLET kickdown block off is in place best of every part made for the 700R4 even has close ratio gearing..
.
full manual valve body revers patter. trans brake.. with 3800 to 4000 stall.. Pm for info..

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

took some time to sell off all the small block stuff I had/427..700R4s (2 of them)and a host of other small block parts.. crated stuff up and shipped..and in all made about $11.000 just from the small block stuff.. took a small loss but its not in my way any more..

got side tracked with a diff hobby for a few weeks..(black guns) gearing up for the 2020 elections..and stocked up on AR 15s for resale..picked up 10 of them at $450 to $500 ea. new factory guns... when the fever hits the buyers market..they fly out the door for $900 to $1000 ea dressed up with goody's..(have a lot of eotechs and stuff left over from my USMC days...(I do this every 4 years)

getting set to get the hood painted (local shop) and the eng bay also painted (my shop)

You have anymore info on that trans and how it doesn't use a kickdown cable? Never knew you could set them up like that.

Ah, racecar stuff. I see. I also was not aware 700's could be equipped with a T/B, but then again I haven't really been keeping up with the parts available for them.

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

Been side tracked for the last year..want to get this thing going.. so tonight ordered (summit) the mock up block and trans ($869) to get this thing test fit and set up..so I can order the drive shaft (carbon fiber)..its just me doing the work so wanted to get things Measured out will be checking it Twice..(after all $1400) for a drive shaft is crazy! might order a aluminum unit first..just to make sure..and the carbon unit after all the real eng is in...hate to drop that sorta cash and have a goof...would suck!!

I can check the K Member on the real eng. and bolt the tranny back to it to check Measurements. from point to point...just don't want to be putting in and taking out the real eng..2 or 3 times if I don't have to... less stress..

hoping to get the holes cut for the headers about the same time..any body use these?

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

if you intend to street drive this thing, skip the carbon shaft. the bonding agent used for the carbon tube to the aluminum yokes does not like heat cycles that it sees on the street and it will separate over time.

no worries..checked all this out .. with the cost of things and a aluminum back up drive line for the first fit will always be on hand..carbon drive shaft like slicks. on the car when wanted..

i doubt you would see any benefits from a carbon shaft on this car for the first few years. thats the kinda stuff you do when chasing hundredths.

i agree. seems silly to buy a mockup trans when you own the real thing too, but i definitely don't have the same resources you do, lol.

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

im on board with the mockup engine/trans hahaha. i put motor plates in a car a few years back and after pulling the engine/trans what seemed like a dozen times, i swore i would never do it again without the mockup foam versions. once im done with my car i will probably sell them. soooooo much easier to deal with. no cherry picker, just use your hands.

ya its nice to have the right tools for the job..dont like the pain in the a$$ stuff..and I don't have to worry about dinging up Expensive Parts.. or the car...
AS for chasing small amounts of times..wanted to start as low as I can.. and go from there..as I still have not cut the car up..(bump stops only) at this point..its should be a fun car to drive.its more about what I wanted to do with bolt on parts..and still have fun..
this car still has
Full Interior with.
Power 4 wheel disk Brakes
power windows
power rear hatch
tilt wheel
and Factory CD player & speakers
Dome Light
full carpet
back seat (folded down) back bar/cross bar keeps it that way..

but I did make a new years Resolution..To get the car running!! did order a R2C Air cleaner set up..as I don't think the unit I have will flow the CFM needed to feed my Tribute ZL1..

but they did not do exactly what I wanted.. they put this hump in the top and bottom of the base and lid. making it I think to tall. will have a lid and base Machined out of 1" aluminum plate. to drop it down..if I have to..

if they would have/or could have made the lid and base the way I wanted..it would be 2" inch's lower..(with out the humps)..lid and base flipped in this pic.dropping it by 2".

slow going but the plan is to get it running this summer1

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

Ok. It's been a fast year...life got in the way. and..ANOTHER HOBBY..with the way the fire arms Market has been going might start selling ammo Iv stocked up on for the last few years..lol 10 year stock pile!!

anyway started removing the wire harness having Scooter build me a new one just for the big block and Fitech system. keeping the body harness..(small side of the C100 Plug)
had to remove the steering wheel today. for more room to work on/remove the brake booster.. I got stuck under the steering wheel..(shoulder) had to have the wife pull me out..lol..even with it up all the way UP (tilt)..cars in the air 2 feet..and me on my back..no seat.. rocker panel removed knife edge of body cutting into my hip...lol so she pulled me out...lol..

stripping out the eng bay to get it reshot in body color.back to new.. just setting for 10 years its dusty in there. snake skin pulled off and back
back a few years ago when I moved the car to its new home. I had all the Spohn Front end parts on the car ...for like 4 hrs..found wheel set back..tie rod close to K member..and the Fact..they cut the main tube to make room for the tie rod ends...it was All Sphon parts..off they came..and UMI K member and Viking coil overs..and others.. better fitment in the end...Glad I got to see first Hand....

note: the shape/condition of the carpet and Floor Matt..still like new. note the red wire coming out of the ECM..runs to the nos set up back in the 90's
had the fogger set up on a suprer ram..ran like a champ..its all coming out! sending it off to another member..
the red wire is part of the custom chip. that the Factory Chip rides on..(piggy back)

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

Ok removed steering wheel to give me more room..(ya I know) but I Could not roll over.. with the wheel in place..so set it up with my Grant Wheel part #(not made any more)
NOTE: let me say alot of guys Are installing Grant wheels (look at YouTube) AND ALL i SEE IS guys cutting the end Cap (dust cover) what ever you want to call it.. so I talked to Grant wheels. and this is what I found out.. we know they dont like anybody removing Air bags..ya ya WE Know... so The end caps come in Diff size and Depths.. yep..so ya have to get the right one.. mine takes a #11.. the kit for most of the 3rd Gen Camaros comes with part #27..(needs to be cut) below photos shows the wheel base installed with the #11 cap cover. see the fit Cant get any better..
Note this is in a 1992 Z28.

now trying to get a end cap larger in diameter (say 4.1/2") to cover. slide over the outside if you will. so you don't see any gap.. but you dont have to cut the damn things...but getting the right cover..well..I had to ask a favor at Grant..

Re: headers $2000 GOING Big Block!

Test fit of new Steering wheel & trans Brake button.. all of the auto meter gauges you see in this shot. are getting swapped out.. to ProComp.. all this set up will be up for sale..no nicks dings or marks..all work and will be priced right..even the B&M trans temp is going..at the time in 92 when I did the Gauges. I wanted one with color. what was I thinking..

also swapping out the polished SS horn Buttons For Black..to keep with the GM tone... (this Steering Wheel dropped another 6lbs off the car)

with whats in the car now..and whats in the parts bin..Crazzy! (and no its not all of the Auto Meter Kit in the parts bin)

not so washed out with the flash.
