New 3rd gen owner in Tukwila
Hey guys! I just became the extremely proud owner of an 85 Trans Am yesterday, and I'm SUPER EXCITED. All caps excited, yes that much.
I've never been much of a car guy, but I'm trying to learn with a lot of help from friends who are and doing my own research, but I'm really happy with the car as its the first time I've ever gotten to buy the car I WANT, not the car I Need.
I'll post up some more pics soon, but I just had to show it off

Thanks! Tan interior, needs some minor work so I'm gonna clean it up and its my daily driver. Gonna keep it mostly stock, but get an alarm installed, upgrade the stereo, and maybe augment the red dash panel lights with some new led's. The red lights are cool but kind of dim.
Side note, this is my first V8, is it supposed to idle so low? Sitting around 500 RPM at idle, but she gets up goes fast.

After warmed up, and it died on me once while I was trying to do a 3 point turn out of my apartment, but that was while it was still kind of cold. Just feels like its always on the verge of dying, but I've never had a V8 so I don't know how normal that is.

If I recall it was in 400-500 range. I'll snap some pics on my way home tonight at idle so I can get better info and post them up.
Re: New 3rd gen owner in Tukwila
Oh, yikes, that is way too low... first bet would be Idle Air Controller, but I'll make a better educated guess once you get some more exact RPMs.

Any tips and instructions once I get'em up will be appreciated. I'm woefully under qualified lol. I fix computers, not cars. But I'm trying to learn!

Idle air control valve needs adjustment most likely, I recommend getting a Haynes Manual for your car, most auto parts stores have them. If you fix computers you will get the hang of your third gen in no time, nice car btw.

Ok, snagged some pics:
Here's a cold idle this afternoon

A Warm idle this evening after driving around for awhile, including some freeway:

And here I snapped some video of it idling at a stop light:

Hope this gives some insight. It died on me again tonight when I shifted into reverse to back into my carport.

Yeah, IAC would be the place to start. Cold idle is too low, warm idle is a little low, but the fact it is dying shows it isn't running right.

Thanks! I've seen a few other thirdgen's around this area now that I've been paying attention, and I'm always wondering...are they on the forum??!! :P I really love this car to death, I've never cared about my car so much before

I always wonder that myself. In fact, there is a maroon t/a right up the road from me I have thought about if the owner is a member here. by the way Genesyn, did you get the idle issue straightened out?
Cheers!

Looks good man, that idle is pretty low like others have said, another thing to be cautious of is the accuracy of the tech, I have never had any dead accurate gauges with my car after 6 years and both styles 80s&90s dash in my camaro they were all off slightly, never noticed until I started using a datalogfer the see what the ecm is seeing.
There are way too many thirdgens up here for me to track honestly, back in Arizona there was only a handful of us up here I see them daily. Some people use cascadecrew.org I use that one mainly because its mostly local people, a few of them pop over here every once in a while.
All in all its a beautiful car man
ArmorgetRS what do you mean by grass roots flyers?

His tach is accurate, or at least read the same value as TunerPro RT
By grass roots flyers I mean creating something that isn't official TGO to hand out to bring people to TGO. Basically a grass roots campaign to bring Thirdgen owners here.

Ah ok I get what you mean, I used to have a vinyl on my windshield in Arizona, now I just write it down for people I meet
its good that that's been verified, I installed a glowshift tact in mine after seeing it was 250 off at idle and got incrementally worse as rpms went up, I had no clue until I started with the moates setup good old 90s circuit cards.... I even did the fix using a variable resistor and dialed it in for a temp fix but I knew it was still off a bit
