Drift Session June 12th 2004

Just a FYI, Drift Session is this upcomming weekend Saturday, Its $10 to watch, $20 to drive. Event runs from 9am to 3pm at HRP. I will be down there in my green IROC, if you guys wanna come for ride alongs let me know. I had planned to swap in a working 700R4 before the event, but decided to give up on the 700R4 and go for a TH350 swap with manual valve body instead. No sense destroying another 700R4, might as well get a better tranny. So this weekend I'll be using the broken 700R4 transmission in 1st gear again. We'll see if it blows up!!

Hey Shawn, what happened. Kell told me it looked like something caught on fire when you were in the skid pad cause he saw somebody with a fire extinguisher. Also, who flipped their car. I always leave right before something crazy happens lol! Last time I went I just missed the car that caught on fire in the bushes at the top.

Dude, Xtreme Karnage at the LOKAL Drift Track, YO! We had a guy run off the course in the lat auto-x session, busted his suspension pretty good and he was stuck in the car until they could pull him out. Anyone got pictures of the drifting mishaps?

Dude, that sucks. I hope no one was seriously hurt...?

Yeah my car overheated pretty bad because I was having too much fun in the skid pad trying to blow up my tires and I didnt pay attention to my temp guage. Then when I pulled off to check it out a small fire started on the pass side spark plug wires, so someone helped me put it out with the Fire Extinguisher. I messed up the car ptetty bad, the cooling system pressurized so fast it blew out the drain plug (and 1/2 the housing) and the radiator seals blew. So I'm replacing the radiator and spark plug wires this week (parts from my 89 RS) but still cant determine if the engine was damaged. I have a feeling it was considering the mileage and abuse, but wont be able to tell until I can get the cooling system to hold water so I can test it out. But its OK, I'm not all mad or anything. Even if the motor is blown, I'm already looking forward to tearing it apart and attempting my first rebuild. The Valve Seals were gone ever since I bought the car, this caused oil to leak down into the plugs and foul them up. This was killing my throttle response which is very important for drifting, so it needed a rebuild anyway. But if parts (heads, etc) are cracked or something, then yeah I'll probably get salty. But its OK, car needs a lot of other stuff too so I'm glad I'm downing it to do some extended service. I'm going to replace the front struts with some new Tokiko HP's I got cheap off E-bay, swap in some leftover Eibach springs that used to be in my orange Z, replace the broken 700R4 with that $300 TH350 for sale in the paper right now, and fix the front steering linkage ($20 Coleman adjusters) and lower ball joints (having a shop press the bushings for me). So I already pulled the insurance and car will be down for a while. Guarantee I'll miss the next Drift Session if the motor does need a rebuild. If not, then maybe I might be out there next month .... maybe ...

So next month you gotta make sure you represent Chris!!

The guy that flipped was Shane-O in the blue 240. He was comming out of the sweeper at like 80mph (drifting around the staging lights for the 1/4) and got too close to the tire barriers on the outside wall. Car was totalled but he was OK. This happened like 20 minutes after someone else crashed on the same turn (though damage was not as severe). Sorry no pics.

Shawn, I'd like to hook up with you while you're doing your rebuild, just so I can see what the heck it entails - I'm planning on doing one myself in a few years, might as know a little bit before I do it...

Aww that's too bad. Your engine is probably fine, but if not, there's no excuse not to rebuild it and build it the way you want it!

How fast do you guys go (relative to the road...) while you're drifting? I was under the impression that you guys weren't in second gear all that much.

Keep us updated.

Laters,
Scott

Yeah he did drive that 240 home. Crazy! Tracy got her own car now so the green machine can stay down for as long as I need (but hopefully I dont take too long to fix it hehe). Yeah any of you guys can come check it out if you want. I want to make sure I do the rebuild correctly so I will be referencing a DIY type of video training thing. I've only been using 1st gear lately to drift because my 700R4 is toast, but the max speed I've ever drifted was around 70mph in 3rd gear in my old 89 RS with L03! Revlimit did long slides at 85mph with his L03! Probably going to go even faster now with that built 350. But that one time Komatsu came down in 2002, wow he was crazy like 100+ mph. For both Revlimits and my speeds, thats what we see on the speedo (which may or may not be accurate, the tires are spinning). But when I saw Komatsu I was standing on the side and saw the guy with the speed gun! Insane!

Hey I heard Komatsu isn't with Signal Auto anymore. Any truth in that. Also, it really is too bad that I didn't meet you a couple of years ago Shawn. I had sooooo many L98 & IROC parts & stuff that I sold for really cheap. Good luck on your rebuild though if it's needed

Yea its true that Komatsu no longer drives for signal auto. They didn't consider him to be good enough (in japan he's actually not that great) so they cut him from the signal team. From what I hear though he might be driving for HPI. Man I need to make it back to the drift sessions. I'll be there in July with my new C5 brake system and hopefully I'll have my body kit on there.

Hey Shawn check your PM on drifting.com I PM'd you about the C5 brake adapters and hubs.

But damn Shawn don't do to much donuts. Haha...those donuts will kill cars! Hopefully your car isn't as damaged as mines was. I burnt the valves on my 7th cylinder in my car. Car never ran good after that happened and I lost a whole lotta power.

I'm going down to the tracks tommorow, not sure what time though, my GF's dad is gonna run drags later in the afternoon, 69 SS Chevelle and 383 stroker S10. I'll bring the RS though, maybe squeeze a run in if I can borrow a helmet. Hope to see you guys there, maybe one of you can help me with a minor problem, (strange squeaking from rear drivers wheel, I'm thinking it's either the rear shock bushing or the breaks but am not sure). I'll try to go early to see you guys drift hehe.

My son and I went, watched and were awed by the drifters who have polished this skill to a much higher level than we saw a couple years ago. Very entertaining!

RevLimit's Camaro definately kicks butt on the road race course and I envy his six-speed manual trans coupled to a 13-sec quarter which puts his thirdgen out front. It will be a fearsome beast when the front-rear weight distribution moves closer to 50-50. I'll send a couple magazine tech articles on a successful thirdgen road race car you might find interesting.

Cheers,
Ed

Yea I thought my friend had tightened hte lugs on the drivers side of my car. Turns out he didnt O_o I was going aroudn the sweeper turn probably at around 65mph or so and HEY my wheel flew off haha. The only thign damaged was the studs were gone and the area where I mounted my battery. That rear section where you put a blown tire. That part got dimpled in...solved that by pushing it back out. haha.

If you guys wanna check out the next Drift Session its on August 21st. Guarantee we'll have both Camaros out there for some tandem action. I never ended up getting my trans installed in time for the last drift session, ran into problems with the torque arm conversion bracket (had to drill for like 3 hours hahaha) and one of the exhaust manifold bolts (y-pipe connection) broke @ 8pm the night prior so it needed to be swapped out. I just gave up hahaha.

See you guys on the 21st!!

I'll be in Florida the next two weekends, (no door grabbing action DOH!) but I'll see if the wife wouldn't mind going to see some drifting. She's more excited over autocross, though, to be honest. I only wish they did more stuff on Saturdays... Is it bad during a drift session if the guy just wants to race through the course as fast as he can WITHOUT drifting? I want practice behind the wheel and refuse to do it on the street.

This sucks ... my car wont be ready in time for the Aug 21 Drift Session. Ordered the correct tranny crossmember from Spohn a long time ago and just got word it will be done on the 19th and shipped on the 20th. Very unhappy with both Spohn and Hurst. They are ruining my fun (thats 2 Drift Sessions I'm gonna miss now). Well hopefully Chris will be there. Sorry Scott!!

I went down to drift session to watch my brother drift his "hatchi", was kinda fun, although boring since everyother car was either a AE86 or a 240SX. Not a single american car in sight!

I was there too, but my car is still broken so I just watched (and recorded). Well I got the part I needed today so guarantee I'll be out there for the Sept drift sessions. But I think I'm only gonna drive on the 5's (the night event).

I'll hopefully also be there at the night time drift event. Hopefully I'll have the cash to make it out though I don't know.
