Sorry no E-Tec or Fastburn heads here. I've got stock Vortec heads. And yeah Rob, I know it's suicide to run dual quads with the way gas prices are right now but I figured what the hell!

Thanks man! I'm kinda limited on the lift for the cam due to the nature of the Vortec heads but I've got some secret stuff I'm working on yet. I can tell you that the entire valvetrain will be from Comp Cams. Don't wanna give away too much yet. hehe.

lol anthony, dual quads wow.. freaking monster motor there. As long as it aint a daily driver you'll be fine.. then again gas prices and my L98 are hurting me pretty hard right now...

At least its more than a step up from the good ol LO3.

That deal kinda fell through & after pricing out everything that I wanted to go that route, it got too expensive. Funny how things change so quickly huh lol!

Wow that's awesome. I sure would hate to be the guy that has to do the computer tuning on it. I don't even know how to tune just one! lol!

good to see the bottom end coming together man! Which internals did you go with? how long did the block stay at the machine shop? I keep hearing horror stories with Ted's.

Thanks guys!! Yeah, I keep hearing things about Ted's too now. hmmm...guess they're not the same as before now. Last time I used them was when I built the 289 for my Mustang(sorry Chevy people ) back in '95. I did all the assembly & just had them clean up my block, bore it out, & do misc. machine work needed on small things. They were good back then but I don't know about now!

Nothing fancy for the internals since this is only a street motor with ocassional track time.

Eagle cast crank
4130 steel con rods
Speed Pro hypereutectic dished pistons (pump gas friendly )
ARP bolts everywhere

All the machine work, clearancing, balancing of the rotating assembly, & actual assembly was done at Smeding Performance in Cali. Yeah, I got lazy with the assembly of the bottom half......but I'm still gonna check all my clearances & dial in the torque on all the bolts. Then we'll see how good of a job they did. But overall, I'm very impressed so far with their staff, knowledge, help, & assembly.

What mode of shipping was used to transport the block and what was the cost?

Also, I'm guessing about 450 rear wheel horses ... will twist a stock tranny into pretzels. Anything new there?

It was shipped through a company called Royal Hawaiian Express. So shipped by boat. They are based in Santa Fe Springs, CA. Shipping time was short & price was awesome. I highly recommend them if you ever ship big items from Cali to here! When the motor hit Oahu it's taken over by RPM Transportation. They are based in the Pearl City Industrial Park area.

The total shipping cost from Smeding Performance to my door was $225!!!! Including lift gate service......meaning I didn't have to unload it myself. (Yes they actually do charge extra for unloading stuff out of their truck!)

Total shipping time was only 8 days. Smeding Performance actually took longer to get it sent out to Royal Hawaiian Express just to ship!

The trans I have on the side for this motor has some upgrades. I don't know them all offhand, but I might go through the upgrade list again & see if additional things are needed for this 383! I originally wasn't planning on a "torque monster" 383 at first......It just sort of happened haha! The trans is a 700R4 so I'll still enjoy cruising speeds at a decent RPM with a lockup converter!

who's building the tranny then? I was kinda shocked by how many HD parts there are for the 700R4 in the aftermarket.
When are we gettin the 411 on the valvetrain? I'm curious

Ok here's the 411 on the valvetrain
Everything valvetrain wise is from Comp Cams. Originally I was thinking of going with a "small base circle" grind on the cam so I wouldn't have rod to cam clearance issues. But I had a long talk with one of the main guys from Comp (Introduced to him through a friend) & he convinced me otherwise from the "small base circle" cam setup. He said to try & avoid that setup if possible because the cam is weaker due to the smaller base circle. Then there's problems with lifters, etc. etc. With the cam that I chose I "shouldn't" have any clearance issues.....but it's still safe to check just to be sure.

He picked out a grind that I originally was going to choose so I feel pretty good about it. Also happy that I really don't need a custom grind since this is only a street motor & don't need every last bit of power I can get out of it. This cam is pretty popular & I know many people have used this grind with success. Here's the list.

Camshaft
Part# 08-432-8

Grind # XR282HR
Duration @ .050" 230 IN. / 236 EX.
Valve Lift 1.5 Rocker .510 IN. / .520 EX.
LSA 110 degrees

Lifters
Part# 850-16

Oem style roller lifters

Timing Set
Part# 3136

Hi-Tech Roller Race Set

Rocker Arms
Part# 1412-16

Non Self-Aligning Magnum Roller Rockers
3/8" Stud
1.52 Ratio

Valve Springs
Part# 986

1.430 Dual Spring

Using regular Steel Retainers & 10 degree Valve Locks.

I finally got some work done on the motor! I've been so busy with other things that it's not funny! I put the cam in straight up & put on the timing chain just so I could spin the motor to check for cam clearance. Bearing in mind that this is a 383 & I didn't get a small base circle cam I was kinda worried. Well, after spinning the motor over very slowly & checking everything out guess what............Everything clears!! woohoo! I'm so relieved. I'm still a little hesistant to say that all is good though because I'm still gonna degree the cam in & then we'll see if everything still clears!

Stay tuned!

It's a two piece timing cover & from Comp Cams. But, I think the company "BoLaws" is the manufacturer of these covers & they just sell a line to Comp Cams to sell.
