Question About 6e Timing

I ventured to quaker city raceway yesterday about 2.5 hr drive
3 people in car and track stuff-i love hwy mode..
now to my question another prom tuner and my self got into a disagreement about 6E timing table TIMING vs LV8 vs LOAD.
He insisted that table shows you want your actual timing is or should be (meaning your initial is already added in) and I thought
that table showes the amount to be advanced over initial.
(initial not included)

so right now i have my dist @ 6 degrees adv. and in TIMING VS LV8 VS LOAD i have 28.5 full adv. so my wot timing should be
34.5 correct? or is it 28.5?

AFAIK, the timing you write in the prom already has the base timing considered so you are running 28.5*. However, someone posted a table the other day that showed that timing increases at the crank although it isn't increasing in the prom. Since the module does have some self advance set into it, I wonder if it isn't the one doing the extra timing?

hmmm,I really don't know?
but that would be very helpful to find out.
And if i am only running 28.5* total than i should have some
horsepower to gain.
I guess the only way to find out is w/a timing light.
Thanks for the reply hect.
(AFAIK)?

On the 165, the "base" is built into the Main Spark Table. On the 730, the "base" needs to be added to the Main Spark Table.

Hmmm, OK, Now I've got to go check mine with a timing light and diacom at the same time!
I'm a 165 and under diacom it does show "spark advance relative to tdc" and "spark advance relative to reference".
OK, at lv8 of 65 and 800rpm my main spark table shows 25 deg.
On diacom at filtered load variable of 65 and 800rpm it shows spark rel to tdc of 25.4 deg. and spark rel to ref. of 19.4 deg.......So yup, Glenn nails it again as usual!
Hectorsn-You're referring to the ignition module maybe adding timing-yes? Then since I'm running an MSD 6A (multiple spark below 3000rpm and "longer spark" above 3000rpm)- any ideas on the effect on timing with that factored in? Thanks.

This is the thread I was referring to but I see now that is for a GN which is DIS. Don't know if it is different for a dist. engine but I wonder if the module doesn't somehow add timing at higher rpm's. The module does have advance in it when the ecm doesn't have control of it through the EST, but if it does I would figure the timing should be the same as what's in the prom.

As far as the MSD goes, it should get triggered by the module and should do what it says but you never know. I think I read in the instructions that you should recheck timing when installing one of their boxes so maybe they do some kind of calculation instead of just firing off the module. Not much of an answer but that's all I know.

And thanks Glenn for giving an answer as I thought the 730 already had the base timing added to the main table. Does it also have to be added to what the scanner says or is it factored into the data stream?

Yeah I had to ask that question myself (twice I think) just to settle my mind cause I got myself confused thinking about it.

But don't forget about the WOT spark adder.... That is not included in the figures in the main spark table.

And since you mentioned Highway Mode, keep in mind that there is a HM spark adder too.

Laterzzzzz,
Matt
