Super charger for a stock 85 tpi
I have a stock 1985 iroc with the tpi 305, i was wonder if i can get a super charger for it or is the computer to slow. Also what company would be best to get the charger from and what is all needed to run it.
P.S How much horsepower and torque will i be gaining from this.
THANK YOU
MIKE

i have the 85-87 paxton kit which is not made anymore. Every so often you'll see a kit used floating around tho.
You can however convert to the serpentine belt system and accessories, and there are several offerings from vortec and ati that will bolt right on.

it all depends what type of boost you're gonna run. With a stock engine, you can run up to around 8 lbs. of boost, which in theory adds on 50% in the hp and torque departments, so I'd look somewhere like 300hp, 400ft-lbs or the like.
If you build an engine specifically for boost with forged internals, low compression, etc, you can run more boost and make more power.

If you're stock, your compression ratio is somewhere in the 9.0-9.5 range i'm guessing. I don't know specifics of an 85 305tpi, but for that 6-8 lbs. of boost is reasonably safe, provided you tune the car correctly and provide the fuel needed, etc.
if your engine is old and already on it's way out, the supercharger will help it into an early grave. It does put more stress on the internals no doubt, so it will shorten the life of a stock engine no doubt. how much it shortens it depends on boost levels and whether or not everything is properly tuned

Definately no more than 8 psi on a stock engine. Any more than that and you will be putting a serious challenge to your pistons and rings. Once you put some good pistons and rings in that baby you will be fine for about 15 psi of boost.
i would suggest doing a full exhaust, free mods and a full tuneup first...
just thought I'd chime in with that since it seems like you're a little new to the board and all.
Glad to see you wanna boost the car, but it'll only make peak power if it can breath well.
Good luck

then among other problems i had with another 700r4, the 2500 stall converter I bought was stalling at more like 3100 because of all the torque the blown engine is making.
So I said screw it. The T56 is gonna be in in a few short hours' time.
