header ?s

planning on going turbo this winter and I had a ? about the headers. Ideally I want to use stainless right? is there anything else thats good to use? I'm just trying to figure out what I need. Oh, and just out of curiousity...is there anyway that the stock manifold or a set of shortys could just be turned around and/or slightly modified...that'd cost a hella lot less? thanks

I'm using mild steel for mine. I just paid $192 for 2 weld flanges and 8 U-bends from TurboTech. Stainless would have been 3 times that.

You can also use weld "L's". These are schedule 40 steel with the ends tapered. I read on a twin turbo 72 Nova site that the bends were $4-$5 each. He used 1.5" stuff, which actually measured 1.6" inside, and like 1.9" outside diameter. Foot lenghts of this is a lot cheaper than the bends. Welded properly, it would be very strong, but not near as corrosvie resistant as stainless would be. I am planning on starting my turbo project sometime later next year, and I havent decided if I will use the L's, or a set of S-10 headers. The S-10 headers are only 1.5" though. I might try and fabricate some.

It's what I think of every time I say "hmm maybe I should build a turbo system."

I've almost finished building a set that looks just like that.... They should flow awsome.

Maybe it's just me but does anyone see a resemblance between those and equal length mustang shorties?

Just as "loopy," but Stang header primaries are spaced evenly, like a BBC is

that is exactly what I had in mind when I drew them. I have to tell you that according to our dyno the HP diff between equal and un-equal length is so small I would definitely go with the unequal shorties and keep my plug boots from frying.

I think equal lenght headers are just a bragging right issue. Kind of like how a ***** can make 80hp per liter, but they still only have 160hp.

Buddy of mine has BBK equal lenths on his mustang. Plug access is very very tight and he pretty much has to fun the wires underneath.

youve seen my post, actually I love turbo cars for the reason that they are different. but only people who have the resources, capability to build one, would be the kind of person that wouldnt even bother asking "do they make a kit?" they would just commence building.

just throw a supercharger on there...same principle but much less money and fab work. Turbos are cool as hell and IMO better than a supercharger but how many people can actually build headers and what not...but I know i could throw a vortec kit on my car.

its just that so many people think turbos would be cheaper, or have more power or would be easier to install. there are just alot of myths surrounding third gen turbos. I feel that the average guy that doesnt have the resources to build/fabricate is better served calling up ASSC and telling them, hey dude I have this all forged lower compression 434 small block chevy with o-ringed 235cc Pro-1's and I need a kit or partial kit that will fit my 3rd gen with an intercooler, a cam, but I want to go 8's. what do you sell? its not like it wouldnt still have your personality you would still have to build the intake (probably without fabication) and fuel sytem and some ducting. BAM! If your talking about a 305 or 350 or even a well warmed 355, 383, or 406 then procharger has what you need in a standard kit for the most part.

B4Ctom1, I couldn't agree more. It seems like there is a feeling with 3rd gen guys that if someone supplied them with a manifold/header that everything else woule be simple. From working on my own setup I can tell you that could be the absolute simplest part of the whole thing.

To make everything else fit is a PITA. To make it so that everything else fits and you can get to things, that's harder. You have to sit down and make your decisions. What is the most important to you, and you'll quicky find that the stuff that doesn't make the top of that list has to be compramized. Getting rid of the AC, power brakes, power steering... all make it easier to fit things, but also make the car less driveable.

Of course, I'm betting that even reading this most will still sit and think how easy it should be, why no one offers a cheap kit...

I know a guy that is selling one of those old banks kits with the little turbos for making a 305 go like 12's or something, they might be t3's, he knows better than I do what size they are. he bought it and now is selling it to partially cover his purchase of a F1R and sheetmetal intercooler from its previous owner in his home town. any interested parties could contact him at Nickg124@aol.com
