Just Getting Started

I've been reading posts on this board for some time now and I decided to jump in. I recently sold my Nissan 300ZX, because I needed a 4X4 when I left for shcool in Colorado (the RWD didn't do too well on the ice). Now I've got a lifted 4Runner and I plan to pick up a '91 or '92 Firebird in the summer of '04 after I graduate and move back to San Diego, CA. The Bird will pull cuising duty and drag strip time, but the truck will be the daily driver. I'm not new to the track (15.1 @ 91mph in the NA 300ZX) or to the garage (swapped the motor in the truck this summer) so I don't think I'll ask too many stupid questions (posted on ZCar.com for years). Introductions aside, here's my plan:

I'm going to start with a '91 or '92 5-speed TPI. I hope to swap in a roller cammed 383 or 406 w/ all fordged internals, a high flow induction system (Stealth Ram or Super Ram) with injectors to match, a 150HP wet NO2 system, aluminum flywheel and driveshaft, and hopefuly a T-56. The full high flow exhaust and K&N intake are a given. I also plan to burn my own PROM. For the exterior, I'd like 'Stang owners to think it's just another 305 w/exhaust, so I'll keep it as stock as possible, but I'm going to need some meats out back as my goal is 450HP at the rear wheels.

Well, what do you think, please post pictures and descriptions of your similar rides, along with any advise you have for me.

Thank you for your help, I figure if I plan this project for the next year and a half, there won't be as many suprises.

P.S.: I'd like to keep this car smogged in CA if at all possible

Sounds like a pretty good setup, and with the NO2 I think 450 RWHP is very possible. Personally I would go w/ the 383 b/c it should be cheaper to build and you will still reach your 450 RWHP goal. You should check out the TPI forum, and see what cam and head combo the 383 guys are running to make some serious power. As for intake you should also look into the LT1 intake conversion by John Millican, it's a pretty cool setup. Maybe you can pass emissions w/out it, but I know that the Stealth Ram and LT1 intake do not have an EGR Valve.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the input. I have also been leaning toward the 383, I heard that the 400 block is missing two water jackets, is that true? Also, on the intake, I'm thinking more and more that the Super Ram is the way to go in CA, I mean w/o the EGR I can't see that it could pass CA smog very easily. Plus the $750 or so savings on the Stealth Ram would go right out the window if I got caught riding around with an unregistered car. The Super Ram will pass smog right?

Glad to help out! I know that 400 has to have some sort "steam" holes drilled, and maybe some other mods. in order to work. I don't know alot about the Super Ram and emissions, but do a search. There should be a ton of info. on emissions and all the different intakes.

Good luck trying to find a 91 92 trans am, if you try to find one here in cali be prepaired to wait a long time unless you don't care about t tops. Ive been searching and searching for a 92 trans am with a 305 TPI and t tops and 5 speed is even harder to find. I dout you will find a 5 speed trans am around anymore. I have found 2 350 hard top 92's around here. In other states Ive found what Im looking for but I don't want to have to go out of state at the moment. So I might just buy this 92 bird I found that has a 305 TBI and 5 speed, with t tops of course!

I used to drag race my daily driver, but I realized that I wanted more and more power, and if I got it, it would become more unrealistic to drive it half way across the country back and forth to college in CO. So with that in mind, plus the icy roads here, I sold my 300ZX and bought a 4Runner. Now when I get back to CA for good next year after graduation, I can do it right. I'll drive my 4Runner to and from work, so I will have no time constraints on my project car. Of course that means I'll have to keep my 4Runner daily driveable until I get a third car. That might be hard consitering that I've had it for about eight months now and it already has a 3" suspension lift (of my own radical design), 1" of body lift, no sway bars, 4.56 gears and 31" tires. Once I'm free to make it wild, it will have a solid front axle conversion, 38" inch tires, lockers front and rear, a rediculous custom suspension and the 305 from my firebird.

I know this isn't a truck board, but I just thought there might be some crossover adrenaline junkies like myself out there. (Drag racing, road racing, four wheeling, whatever gets you going!)

ROFL no thats the car I went and saw tuesday that Im buying. It needs new paint and a new windshield, your not in SD right now are you? Im afraid some one is going to steal it under my nose before I have the cash in order. Its been keeping me up at night because of that thought.

really want to know?
I would say about $13000 went into it.
My dad just got a 1969 SS350 camaro. we are considering taking everything out of my 89 and putting it into that old camaro. only problem would be it wouldnt be my daily driver anymore.

but it would be cool to have a blown, fuel injected, overdrive, 1969 SS350 camaro dontchathink?
