Need a cam! Which one?

I am building a 406. Here is what it'll have.

406
afr 190's
10.5 compression
victor jr.
3000 stall
3.73's
700r4
125-200 shot of juice.

I drive this car quite a bit on the highway and just cruising around. I put this in the power adder forum because of the nitrous that I'll be using. I plan on hitting high 10's with this car. I had a solid roller picked out before. Now I'm thinking that I want to use a hydraulic flat tappet or hydraulic roller. I want to make about 500 hp or more with this cam. I also think that the duration should stay between 230-240 because I only have a 3000 stall.

Any suggestions?

If you haven't purchased heads yet, AFR 195's have bigger ports designed for intake manifolds like victor jr's, so I would invest in some 195's if you still can. Nitrous like LSA's around 112*, i have no idea why this is.

I agree with this.

I think the 226/240 TPIS hydraulic roller would be a good choice, they make 500+ hp out of a 383 with the same parts - although a 406 will peak a few hundred rpm lower.

Two additional things you should get: AFR rev kit and an AFR stud girdle - keeps the valvetrain from flaoting with a hydraulic cam and low(ish) svalvespring pressures.

I called Lunati and Isky they recommended a custom grind. Both recommend solid cams. I'll just have to check valve lash on occasion. Here are the specs for the Lunati.

solid flat tappet
.532 .552 lift
283 293 duration advertised
244 254 @ .050
110 lsa

Now the Isky.

solid flat tappet
.547 .560
292 302 advertised duration
259 268 @ .050
110 lsa

I put both into Dyno 2000 and the Isky is slightly better.

Sleepybu: I have looked at the XE 284 pretty hard.

I probably will go with the afr 195's after looking at them. Thanks guys for the replies.

Man is that a big cam... is it for the '83? I take it that it's not a street car?

It is a street car. I told Isky and Lunati that I like to drive it alot. I told them that with the current setup I could drive 3 hours to the track and race and then drive back home and that I would still like to do that with the 406. He said that I would still be able to. I have seen way bigger cams on the street. To me those arent that huge.

Bigger cams in larger engines seem less radical. If I were to put either of those cams in a 283 or 327 they would be too radical to drive for any distance. I think that in a 406 they will work fine. I'm really leaning toward the Isky.

I don't have a problem with bigger cams, but it just seems like it doesn't match the rest of your combination. With a cam that size I'd be thinking AFR 220's or 227's, 12:1 or higher compression (which with a cam that size will run on 92 octane), stall somewhere north of 4000 (which could still be street driven if it's a good design), 1-7/8" headers...
