Be Cool and 12 rib

I am running a Be Cool rad and 12 rib procharger in my 87 camaro and am looking for some people who have completed this combo to shoot me some advise on the fitment problems I am having.
First off I have trimmed the top radiator hose as far as it will go but there are still interference problems. The only solution I can see is to cut at least half of the hose fitting off the rad, but obviously I am hesitant and would like to see if this is necessary before butchering such an expensive piece.
Second, I am running a dual fan system and it is a hell of a struggle to make the drivers side fan fit in between the pulleys and the rad. The passenger side has no clearence issues at all. What are your opinions on running the passenger side fan only? I was thinking with the huge capacity of the rad that it might be enough, especially since at low rpm it is basically just an 8:0-1 engine that won't produce much heat.
Thanks in advance for any advice or help you guys can throw at me.

What makes you think it won't produce much heat? Are living in a mild climate (i.e. annual temps lower than 90*). My ATI TA gets hot with both electric fans running and a BeCool radiator. Though some of it can be explained by the intercooler blocking airflow up front, but still on a 90* day temps usually around 210*-230*. I would suggest running both fans if temps are occasionally above 90*. Besides, unevenly cooling the radiator with one small fan on the passenger-side is highly inefficient.

Gausy,

There are two things you can do:

1)
Remove the top radiator support and hinge the radiator back an inch or two to gain access to two rubber "isolators". These rubber pieces (one each side) are sandwiched between the A/C condenser and radiator. Literally hacksaw off about 1/4-inch of the rubber away. This will allow the top of the radiator to be located forward an additional 1/4-inch. Then you'll have to modify the two rubber upper radiator retainers located in the upper radiator support. They will have to be moved forward 1/4-inch. I did this by removing the pull-through retainer and hacksawing off the front portion.

You can also change your upper hose to a NAPA hose P/N 8389. It has an extremely tight radius at the radiator inlet. Although I bought the hose, I did not need it because of:

Then you can fab up a radiator hose support bracket (pic shown below). Not only is it a neat way to keep the hose away from the belt, but it also protects the hose in case of blower belt breakage.

2)
Although I run a cog setup and it is impossible to retain the primary fan motor, I know on the 12-rib (which I used to run) that clearance is tight. To solve this problem, I replaced both factory fans with a dual fan (and shroud) unit from Flex-a-lite. It's a very thin design that's only a total of 2-1/4" thick. It's slick!

Willie,

Thank you very much for your input! I have the hose trimmed down to the point where it is so close to the belt that I would imagine the flex alone in the blower bracket would make contact.

The hose bracket that you are describing would be perfect for my application. It looks like a very simple fab job, but is the whole reason why I posted this question, for " been there, done that" experience.

I will place an order for a flex-a-lite system on Monday, you have been an excellent help.

Thank you,

Martin

Martin,

My fabbed bracket is made from 1/16" thick sheet metal I bought at a local hardware store. It took me a couple of attempts to get it right...

I've attached a pic of what the fans look like. I took this before I fabbed my upper hose bracket. I know it looks like there are no fans there -- look closely, they are there -- that's how thin they are! BTW, the shroud fits perfectly against the radiator core!!

I was afraid my belt might lunch the hose and strand me, So I got a chromed brass sink drain pipe extension

Yeah Tom, and you've got an 8-rib setup too. The 12-rib (and cog) setups definitely place the belt closer to the hose.... yikes!!

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!1

ME TOO GIVMEGIVME. Slipping belts are a PITHA. Maybe some decent folks out there will start producing COG kits for our setups at reasonable prices (i.e. less than $600). By the way, WIllie is just sick!!! Wish I worked at a missle silo--LOL!!!!!!!!

Slight tangent here, but I suppose I started it. Not only did it eliminate belt slippage, but it has a cool whine all its own! There's no doubt, stealth mode is impossible for me nowadays!

Yep, I'm one sick puppy. Always want to try something new and different. Hopefully, it's in good taste. So far, everything I've done seems to be. I won't take the time or space to mention the unique things I've come up with.

Kendol, a missile silo??

Rocket ship.........................

Just an observation.................................
You own a rocket for daily transportation..........................
You have a friend at Raytheon Missile Systems........................
And a cockpit with enough gauges to rival an APACHE Helicoptor...

Just having fun..........................LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, everything you said is true, but there's one more thing. I also work at Raytheon as an engineer on the RAM program. And on weekends (not during the summer though), my "rocketmobile" takes a back seat to my convertible!! My red ride is still my #1 car!! But I still have "some" fun with my #2 car!

I'm currently working on my next project, aside my engine that is. Sorry but until it's complete (and successful), it's classified!! Hint: I performed a search on this topic to see if anyone has been successful and it does not appear this is the case. I am determined that I can figure it out. Once I get it working, I'll be posting results and pics on the Body & Interior Board sometime after I get my engine back in my car and running.

Sorry about that. Heck, I need to start another topic and call it, "Weird Willie's Unique Projects, Past, Present & Future".

Willie

Im wondering if I will have to have my CNC machinist friend whack me out a set of cogs for the ratio to make the P-1sc rev to around 60,000 rpm (62,000 is the max), considering the internal ratio and the 7000 rpm redline of the engine. you see any probs with doing this willie or do you think we should open a new thread on this one? maybe "what cogs, pullies, RPM, boost level are you running your procharger?"

I'm game!!!!!!!!!!!

B4C,

If you find someone willing to do the machine work and think they are a pretty reputable shop, I'll be more than happy to join in with a group purchase----assuming there is a price break to be had. BTW, I'll be willing to bet even more people will chip in because slipping belts are a PITHA. Let me know!!!!!! Email me or something!!!!!!!!!!

Tom, I'd start a new topic. I'll share my thoughts on it there. BTW, it's not the cogs themselves that are "expensive". It's the other parts that have to be fabbed. If you guys can generate enough interest in a GP, I'll be happy to coordinate it through the source where I got all my parts. I'll elaborate on the "new" post.

There's nothing wrong when we skew from the original post, except that other guys who might be interested in the "tangential" topic will never know it's here!
