Shade Tree Turbo Install
OK I have my ElCamino with the Turbocharged 350. But the issue is that I have is that at 5000 RPM's I have about 20 psi of boost (way too much for a stock SBC). So I need to reduce boost. My question is can I get a BOV that will be able to blow off the excess boost down to 8 psi?
The turbo I have is off a Diesel Semi (Junkyard) and has no wastegate. So will a BOV suffice or do I need an aftermarket wastegate?
Thanks, Garrett

Going to need a waste gate.
Do you have any specs on your turbo? Make and model semi would be cool.

You might think of adding a restriction pre or post turbo in the exhaust, to reduce it's ability to spool the turbo. Remembering it'll have to deal with ALOT of heat.

What kind of deisel semi did you get that turbo off of? I have access to some big deisel turbos but I did'nt know how they would work on Gas engines. The turbos I'm talking about are massive. They are on 500 hp CAT powered Freigtliners.

Well to tell you the truth the 20#'s is an estimate. (But at about 4000 RPM's the bottom end is about ready to come through the oil pan).
The turbo is a Garrett, off an international truck. Were can I look on the turbo to find out specifics?
I'm putting a new boost gauge on the car today and then I'll let you know exactly what kind of boost we are talking about.
Thanks, Garrett

Well the boost gauge that I bought at a swap meet was junk so no boost numbers. But I can tell you that I'm not a turbo expert, but the turbo will blow the bonnet of the carb. and you can't hold your hand over the turbo when the car is idling.
Here's a pic of the turbo. Any input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Garrett

it has no waste gate in the above picture I would say thats what it needs. here is a picture of the deltagate external wastegate installed and a beautiful example of a awsome way to employit done by smitty and then ruined with my red paint. With the red paint though you can see how the wastergate when actuated via boost/vacuum line can bypass exhaust gasses around the turbo to reduce the boost. Deltagates are adjustable. I saw a used deltagate sell for $150 on ebay a day ago and it came with a spring for 4-6 pounds of boost adjustment and one for 8 to 12 pounds of boost adjustment (both estimated). I hope this is helpful.

Depending on how low you want to set your boost, you will need a bigger wastegate than a delta. You might want to invent in a racegate. They also pop up on ebay, but not as often. I would suggest going with the racegate anyway. You will probably never out grow that thing.

Second, that’s definitely not a powerstroke. They have specific center section flanges that incorporate the oil inlet and outlet on one flange, where that one has a separate inlet and outlet

I have looked at that thing over and over and I think its a regular large A/R T4 look at the exhaust plange and twin inlets.
