Couple questions about centrifugal supercharger
Hey, I just had a few questions. First off, this woudln't be soon really, but I've been thinking of supercharging my 350 down the road. And I believe its a centrifugal supercharger that I'd want. Those are the belt-driven type that bolt on like an accessory, correct? As in, not an intake type (which I think are roots type blowers where the carb sits atop it, right?)
Second, are there any vehicles which came from the factory with that type of supercharger, that may be found at a junkyard for cheap, maybe in need of a rebuild? I want to stay cheap here, you know, do the work myself and learn, not just bolt on some $3K setup.
Third, supposing they did come factory on some vehicles and I could find one, would it flow enough to support a mild 350? I'm not worried about PSI, even if it gave me a small boost would be ideal if I could do the setup for cheap.
My fourth question is, I'm running a V-belt setup and I thought it would be pretty simple to make a bracket for it and run it with a longer belt with one of the accessories somehow. Has anyone done this and fab'ed their own bracket and everything, and what do you have in the project money-wise?
Oh, and I guess I have a fifth question, sorry. I've heard its not hard to setup a carb for blow-through. Is this true? Do you need a boost-based fuel regulation system, or would a carb be able to be tuned to account for the increased air (by richening it up?)

hum, I am really suprised no one wrote any thing yet! well I will tell you what I know. (not much but, its what I know) you are thinking right the centrifical SC is the side mounted one you are describing which looks very similar to the intake side of a turbo housing.

Thanks man, I appreciate the response! Ya, I'm was wondering why no one was replying too.
I wonder why they had low boost quality. Was it the design itself, or slow speeds for some reason pertaining to the V-belt system? Hmm. I'll check around and see what I find, thanks again for the info!

ive been waiting for someone to reply since i have no first hand experiance with them, but noone has, and its been awhile so here i go....
yes... they bolt onto the front of the motor...
athough a positive displacement rootsblower like the eatons can sit the same way, its just not common and there is no kit.(for 3rdgens). also roots dont have to have a carb, they can be FI too.
as far as i know, no. there arnt any. there are several with the eaton superchargers on them. examples are the GTP, thunderbird, lightning, cobra and harley davidson F150... but thoes are all positive displacement blowers... there is no production centrifugal that i know of.
as far as doing it yourself "cheap" thats the way to go.. be aware though, its still going to cost $$$
doubtful... like i said, i dont know of ANY, and if there were, they were probly on imports... and import motors are alot smaller.
a V belt would slip. you need a belt with a good amount of surface area... most that i know of use a 8 rib belt (stock 3rdgen surp belts are 6 rib)
a good number of people running higher boost even step up to cogged belts.
im trying my own eaton M112 setup and im going to have around 1200 invested not counting adding EFI.
ive always heard that this was the hardest type of setup to have for a carb.. and it probly wont be the easiest to drive on the street.
you would have to increase fuel pressure 1:1 so that the fuel doesnt get blown back out of the carb...
nitrous is a cheaper option.. but for some of us, it just isnt the same as being able to stop on the gas anytime, anywhere and have power... plus being the power junkie i am, im sure id eventually push too far with nitroush and melt my mill... id start with a 50... but then add a lil more, and a lil more, till im running a 250-300 shot on my motor and justifying it.. lol.
i shy away from nitrous for that reason.. if you have more self control then me, and dont mind refilling the bottle, go for it.

Thanks MrDude_1 for the great reply, that helps out quite a bit. I was thinking a lot about doing this down the road for a learning project. More than likely, if I do anything I'll throw a 75 shot of NO on it for now, seeing that it would be the cheapest and easiest thing to add right now. I cant afford to not have my car for a period of time to set up something like a SC setup right now anyhow.

I can't think of any other factory setups that weren't either positive displacement blowers or turbos, and for that matter most were V6's or smaller (for something that will move more air you'll have to look into the industrial engines). The exception as some have stated is the Eaton line used on a few different cars, like the M112 used on the cobra, lightning, Austin martin…
My brother is running a modified M90 off of a t-bird super coupe on a 302…, running 11's @ 120 in a 4 door…

2) You won't find a useful blower in a junkyard. Trust me..
3) Expect to spend 3k. No way out of it, unless you find a used setup on ebay, even then, they seem to be going for a lot.
You can do some crazy M90 stuff, but I recommend you just get a kit for your car (after you goto a serpentine setup). Not all of us are as gifted as Saturn.

As far as the M90, check out the compressor map. As far as I knew, that was a lil blower.. Might not give you the CFM at a reasonable efficiency to be worth it..

I know its a pretty small blower, I figured id see probly 3-5 psi, somewhere in there, going by what others are getting from them. Then again, I have a high compression engine (for blower) at about 9.6:1, so I wouldnt want a lot of boost. Oh well, I'm just tossing this idea around, getting thoughts and info. I really just wanted to do this for a fun, rewarding, cheap project.

Since it seems that you guys are too special to do a search yourself, I'll give you a link, check out my post and the attached pics most of the way down the page.

BTW, making power is all about airflow, and airflow will always be proportionate the power your combination makes. Do some approximating and figure out about what it would take to move that car to 120mph in the Ľ and you'll have a pretty good guess what it could do on your firebird.
FWIW, I think that combination still has about 10% more in it (didn't get a chance to prove it last year since the car was hit by a snow plow and spent most of last season in the body shop…), and will top out in the mid 120mph range before we start looking for more blower (actually, maybe more on a fresh engine, the shortblock in that thing is wasted).

Not too special, I've been doing a LOT of searches. I actually just came across that thread today that you linked to. Since reading about your brothers and Saturn5's setups, I've ruled out the idea of centrifugal, and decided if I ever do anything, it will be how you and Saturn have done with an m90. Thanks man.

100s of M90s going 12s and 13s...... the 11second M90 is the exception.. not the rule.
83 Crossfire TA ported his M90 out and has a well tuned setup... most dont.
rooster may only be in the 12s (without traction i might add) but he also has a dead stock LT1, and from what im reading, is happy with it as it stands right now..
whos the other GM with the M112?

100s of M90s going 12s and 13s...... the 11second M90 is the exception.. not the rule.
83 Crossfire TA ported his M90 out and has a well tuned setup... most dont.

Really, sometimes I can't figure out how a lot of people manage to go so slow with nice parts (not really talking about anyone mentioned in this thread, just in general).
If you want to see what can be done with 2 m90's search the net for mike sitar's twin M90 T-bird setup (toohighpsi). That setup ran in the 9's in the 130's before he got bored with it and sold it.
Heh, at some point my brother will upgrade his blower… there's a small chance if he does that I'll slap it on my full size, TBI (L05) truck. Anyone wanna see an almost 6000#, TBI 4x4 run 13's?
