most out of a 305
what kinda of ratings has anybody gotten out of a 305 with a supercharger or a turbo...just curious. Although i doubt anyone has tried it because it would make more since to just swap it with a more powerful engine...but if anyone has i would love to know how it turned out

i had no supercharger or turbo on my 305 but used a 150 shot of nitrous and ran 11.40's all day long.

but isn't preston's motor a 4.020" bore motor? impressive non the less.
oh, and i am running a traditional 305, running mid/upper 13's on pump gas with no power adders. check sig for specs.

anyone got a dyno chart on that motor? what type of low end power does it make, what kind of rpm's does he spin...isn't this car cruised on the roads a certain amount each year with superb gas mileage too?

FWIW, I’ve been running 275 60 15 BFG DR’s on the street for about a month now on a car that’s lowered about as much as you would with some eibach pro springs. They actually measure a little over 28” and are 11.2” wide on a set of stock, firebird wheels (they’re supposed to be 15x7 with a ½” offset, they measure closer to 15x7.5 with a 5/8” offset), and they fit just about perfect, they just tuck into the wheel wells and don’t hit anywhere even during some fairly hard driving. The one time that I did find that they rub is coming out of my driveway (steep, big dip and have to make a turn in reverse), the driver’s side rubs the inner fender a little on the inside, but not enough to really make me do something about it). I _think_ that spacing them out about ¼” would prevent that and still clear the outer lip OK, but I haven’t tried it. I don’t think it would work as well with a wider rim since that would increase section width, at least not without some sheetmetal work

For good small CID engines, look at TransAm. They're limited to 310 CID (not a 305, but close!) and 8200 rpm, and put out about 725 NA this year. I had the dyno chart of a 2001 vintage 14 degree engine, and it was pretty linear torque & hp from 4500-8200, with it just dropping off a little there...

again, another small stroke/big bore motor, i don't think putting that info out will help this guy.
her is my setup:
1985 chevy 305 block bored .030" over
stock cast crank
OHIO Crankshaft forged rods
l69 hyper replacements (9.5:1 comp ratio)
crane blue racer cam .442"/.465" 214*/224*
crane energizer aluminum roller rockers
edlebrock torker II (would run quicker with a good dual plane like a holley street dominator or edlebrock performer rpm)
holley dual feed 600cfm V.S.
standard HEI ignition with accel super coil
700r4 tranny
headman longtube headers with true dual moroso spiral muffs
3.73:1 disc rear
currently the car runs high 13's which is totally respectable coming out of a regularly driven car that is very streetable. i am switching to hooker 2460's and flowmaster force II catback and may see a small decrease in power, but with a better intake, i hope to gain it back. the 305's are solid motors if built right. however, i am planning a hossed-out 355 in the not-so-far future.
hope i helped
oh, and if you want to go faster, just add boost!

Andris, I’d love to see that dyno graph (and any more details if you have them).
As far as the rest of this discussion, I’ve run a 13.8 at right around 96mph in my ’83 crossfire 305, and a 13.43@101 in a friend’s GF’s ’87 formula 305/5speed car. Both had stock long blocks, headers, exhaust and some other tweaking, but nothing special, just high mile stock 305’s with bolt ons, really. I fail to see what the problem is with making a 305 run, the problem is that you have to build it to take advantage of it’s geometry, instead of building it like you wish you had a 350. Breathing is a little more challenging on a 305 (not that much so, last summer I got some vortec heads to flow 234/213 at .500” on a 3.75” bore, pretty close to a 3.736” stock 305 bore, and smaller then a .030” over 305, that’s plenty to support close to 500hp NA), but detonation control is much easier.

I had the heads flowed on the small bore because I wanted to see how well they would work on a 305 (for future reference). They were for a friend’s 350 that went in a full size dually (also the reason that they were so exhaust biased, he intended to supercharge the engine, but sold it before that happened), which dyno’ed in the low/mid 400hp range at the wheels (not bad considering the massive drivetrain and tires to soak up power).
As far as using them on a 305, they are a bit excessive… to _really_ get the most out of them you’d have to build a 305 built up for a hp peak at around 7500rpm. At some point I do intend to do a milder set + 305 + small turbo to replace the 350 in my full size truck, but that will wait till I kill the 350, which as of now is going strong.

A 334 is a .030” over 305 with a 3.75” stroke (like a 400 or a 383), a 343 would be the same bore with a 3.85” stroke (like a 396 stroker).
