Turbo plumbing

I have a few questions about the plumbing of a single turbo setup.

-I know mandrel bends are a necessity but how big 2 1/2 inch or 2 and 1/4 inch?
-the exhaust from both headers are joined by a crossover pipe?
-Is there a lot of clearence issues present when using a 327 sbc and turbo?

Engine: carb'ed 305 in the 87, yuck...
Transmission: 700R4, for now....
1. I would go with at least 2 1/2" piping

2. Yes, both headers need to be connected with a crossover pipe before the turbo

3. All depends on what you have for options, what you want to keep for options, and, where you decide to mount the turbo...

Good luck

I don't think that I am going to have air conditioning as an option if that is what you are inquiring prolly alternator and other necessities and the turbo will probably be located on the left front of the engine bay when looking from the front of the car. Also I will be replacing the stock 305 tbi to a possible 327 cid with tpi intake or something of similar origin.

more questions:
-Another question will I have a lot of clearance issues?
-Can a complete system be built without the car present for measure engine bay specs.?

To answer the new questions:

1. Which side is your battery currently on? and, will it be staying there if it's in the way? Also, do you plan to keep the washer fluid bottle? We have no clearance issues in our car but the battery is in the hatch, no washer fluid, relocated the overflow, and there's no ac. It's really all in how you set it up, and, of course, in what size turbo you use...

2. This can be answered with a solid "No way in hell"

Why? For what most people end up doing crush bent is fine.

but how big 2 1/2 inch or 2 and 1/4 inch?

it depends on what you’re talking about, hot side or cold side, twin or single, what size, engine package…

For the most part they can be significantly smaller then what you’d make them NA, and if I was using crush bent pipe I’d probably choose a size ¼” bigger then I would with mandrel bent, but it’s not a necessity.

single- yes, most of the time, twins- not necessary but woudn’t hurt.

-Is there a lot of clearence issues present when using a 327 sbc and turbo?
between what and what?

-Another question will I have a lot of clearance issues?

that depends on your design, what you’re willing to deal with…generally, yes if you’re make any attempt at optimizing things.

by someone very familiar with them, yes. I’ve built a few that were 90% done on an engine on a test stand and only left things like the final turbo flange angle on the header done on the car to get it just right.

OTOH, for 99% of the monkeys out there with a welder, good luck

err, these require removing the smog pump right? If not, I can easily just weld in AIR tubes to make the system functional.
