general turbo question

Ok, me and my dad got into a discussion I said using a muffler with a turbo helps because if it's a properly designed muffler it'll help scavenge exhaust more and help the turbo draw more air. He said that not having a muffler after a turbo helps reduce back pressure.

You want the least restriction possible after the turbo, hell turbos work great as mufflers if you're worried about noise

the only current production car in the US not to come with a muffler is turbo

I believe I read about a muffler scavenging helping a turbo on this board or at least a board. I don't pay much attention to any advertising for anything.

Heh, and you believe everything everyone says?

Even assuming that you design something that does do scavenging, that implies that you have some sort of pulses to work off of, which you don’t have at all after a turbo. Since what you basically have is smooth flow after the turbo anything added into that path basically becomes a restriction.

in other words, turbos change the rules you play by there anyway

I believe the general consensus is to run a straight pipe from the turbo out to the rear of the car and only muffle it as little as required to quiet the exhaust to "reasonable" levels for the environment.
