I am thinking of putting a super charger on my 350 IROC next summer. I will probably go with the Procharger or maybe Vortech. How much do either of these affect gas mileage? I have read all that I can find, but can't seem to find the answer anywhere. Thanks

can't tell u from presonal experience, but i have an uncle w/an Ati procharger LT-1 putting out 698 rwhp, and he has showed me the numbers from his onboard laptop that as long as he keeps the tach under about 3,000 he doesn't burn alot more gas and that around 2,000 rpm he get better gas mileage, so keep off the gas unless u got a race and u should be fine, and to give info my uncle is running 14 psi, and he get about 20 mpg on the highway and he got a T-56. hope it helps

I have a Vortech on my car and numerous other mods. The car runs mid 12's at 111mph. It is totally streetable. A weekend driver. To think that you will put a supercharger on your car and get good gas mileage is a unreasonable expectation in my opinion. Trust me when I say you WILL NOT be able to keep your foot out of the go pedal!! On long trips with the cruise control on I get 19 mpg. Around town, forget it. The power, the rush is to much. If you are worrying about gas mileage, a blower is not for you. Just my thoughts.

I figured that putting a blower on would reduce gas mileage, but I wondered how much. Basically, my IROC is my daily driver and if I was only getting **** poor mpg then it wouldn't be worth it. My car is plenty fast already, and I know what you mean by always wanting to tromp on the go pedal. It is way to much fun for a while, but then you learn to control that anxiety after awhile. How about torque and stuff. I live in an area that gets some snow, maybe 10-20 inches over 3-4 months. How do you think that would work out? I know that sounds stupid to ask, but I have no experience around superchargers. Thanks

From the sounds of things you should get nitrous. It has no effect on gas milage and sence it is not "always on" like a blower you would not have any drivability problems other than what you already have and you will get the same performance gains you would get with the blower.

putting on a super/turbo charger doesnt necessarily mean worse gas mileage. all it is doing is stuffing more air in. yea, you can run richer, but its not required. after all, why are so many cars comming from the factory now w/turbo chargers if they produce bad gas mileage? ive read about plenty of blown engines that get 20mpg

I appreciate the answers. I don't want nitrous because I have heard too many horror stories about it. If it is not used exactly right, you can screw too much up. The blower just seems like an easier route to go.

What is torque like from a blower? Does it increase dramatically? Thanks

Your torque & horsepower will only increase if there is boost. Boost is a product of rpm and load. If you don't have high load conditions (read this as standing on the throttle) you won't get boost from the supercharger. You don't get boost off idle at moderate throttle. If you drive it like you would normally drive in snow you don't need to worry. Part throttle drivabillity is about the same with a supercharger as it is without. If you can keep off the heavy throttle acceleration you will see no difference in your milage. When you are heavy on the throttle and have manifold boost you will be flowing more air and with it more fuel.

It sounds like no one can (or willing) to give you a quantitative answer. Here it is. I lost approximately one mpg after installing my SC in every day city commuting. Keep in mind that most of your driving is not under boost, and that the loss in mpg comes from the parasitic loss of having to turn the SC. It's similar to running an A/C compressor continuously. It would suffice to say if you retain your driving habits, your approximate loss in mpg would be similar to mine. However, be warned that it is difficult to keep your foot off it simply because it's exhilarating to "feel the power"!!! Hope this helps.
