Comparative cost of custom professionally installed intercooled twin turbo system
I have an estimate for having a custom, intercooled twin turbo system made and installed in my car. The headers, downpipe and exhaust will be stainless steel. The headers are .069" 321 stainless steel with 7/16" CNC-cut stainless steel flanges. Custom intercoolers with Spearco cores, stainless steel exhaust with stainless steel mufflers. Everything except for the turbo's, wastegates.
If you have similar estimate or idea of cost, please let me know so I can give my estimate a 'sanity check'.

Well I got a price for a single turbo, that is 2 new headers, down pipe, all the tubing,I supply my own turbo, intercooler, wastgate. He designe it to dump down to my factory location(emmisons legal)Also tubing to connect to my intercooler,Im using my old ati 3 core.He wants $3000.I have a pic on my website of the car he did,Guido also has craploads of pics too,of the same car..Basically you will be paying most for materials,321 over 304 is what you most likly will want to use.It is essentially more in the long run.I think the best advice I will give to you and Im also taking that advice is wait, just until the spring.CAS I was told by the owner is comming up with a kit for our year.Im going to wait it out.He told me it will be 321 ss also.Wait until the last moment to show your hand.Ive learned from experience by jumping the gun,I shot my foot off.Im going to weigh all my options,If I could weld I would be doing this myself.

Procharged,
That sounds like a pretty fair price. I have an estimate from TRZ Motorsports, which is one of the top chassis shops with the NMCA/NSCA/NMRA crowd. I don't have the written estimate yet, but over the phone they said custom systems normally cost between $12,000-$14,000, not including the turbo's or wastegates. That's for the custom headers from .069" 321 stainless steel, CNC 7/16" header flanges, custom air/air intercooler using Spearco cores, aluminum cold air induction, 321 stainless steel downpipes and exhaust, plus stainless steel mufflers, probably Borla's.
That seems like alot of money to me. I figure the materials are probably going to run $3000, and the intercooler $2000. Maybe $600 for the mufflers, so I', thinking he's charging $6000+ in labor. I asked the guys at Fast Times if they thought that was a fair price, they said it seems a little high, but not ridiculously high. TRZ does beuatiful, show quality work, but that's still alot of money. They have alot of experience building custom turbo systems, so I know it would be done right.
A local chassis shop that does mostly 4-links, roll cages, custom headers, etc. said he thought that was really high. He said he could do it much cheaper, but he doens't have as much experience. He say's he's done 7-8 turbo setups but I've never seen them. Even if I went with him, the custom setup would still be $$$, but not as much. I want to make sure it's done right, it looks good, but I don't want to waste my money.
Buckeye, thanks for the compliments.
P.S. I called Rad Rods by Troy, who did John Meaney's 1300hp twin turbo C4 int his months Popular Hot Rodding, and he said that $12,000-$14,000 was a pretty fair price, using those materials. He said alot of the cost is the extra farbrication that is required to make the job really work. He said they build alot of extra heat shields, brackets, etc, and do alot to minimize heat and the effects of heat on the other components under the hood. He said it's alot more work than just making headers and pipes.

Monty,I just got off the phone with Tony at CAS.He told me the 3rd gen kit is a go for late winter this year/next year.Price will be around $3500-4000 depending on twin or single.Expect a post by him here in the near future. It will include the turbo, and intercooler too.

Procharged,
That's crazy cheap! You can't beat that price, it's hard to beleive it includes the turbo and intercooler. If he really sells it for that price, and it's a good kit and people get good results from it, he ought to be able to sell a bunch.

Monty, here is what I have in my setup so far:
assorted 304ss u-bends: $450
304ss hooker header collectors: $80 (pair)
PT88 4 bolt turbocharger: $1800
still to purchase:
air/liquid intercooler: $1200 (est.)
HKS GT wastegate: $630
Racing Bypass Valve: $300
Tubing to plumb turbo to intercooler and intercooler to throttle body: $100-$200 est.
Total: $4660(est)
I talked a friend of mine into TIG welding the headers together for me, but I have been hard at it cutting the tubes and using 200mph tape to put them together where I need them. Its not turning out too bad so far. I have avoided the large cost of the headers by doing them myself.
I dont know how these shops can justify $12000 for a turbo system. I dont care what anyone says, that is BOGUS. A well built system can be had MUCH MUCH MUCH (did I mention MUCH?) cheaper.
My setup will prove that it is possible.

Guido,
I agree it's alot of money, but I've talked to 3 well known chassis/fabrication shops and that's what they seem to go for.
Obviously, that's why most guys do what you're doing and build it themselves. I would try, but I don't know jack about welding.
Since you are doing it yourself, I'm sure you know first hand how long it takes to test fit, adjust, test fit, etc. It's a time consuming job, and when a shop is charging $40 an hour, it adds up quickly.
I admire you for tackling the project yourself. It's obvious you've done your homework. I'm anxious to hear how it turns out, and what your performance results are.
What size downpipe and exhaust are you going with? What size primaries?
Why did you decide to go with a single larger turbo, rather than two smaller one's. If you've seen John Meaney's twin turbo C4 in this months Popular Hot Rodding, he's amking 1300+hp with two Precision PT52's. That's what I went with also, along with two HKS wastegates.
I see you are going with an air/water intercooler. Obviously they are more efficient that air/air, but I'm interested in hearing your thoughts about it.

well, my thoughts were that it would be less tubing and pipes to put one turbo under the hood instead of two. the one turbo costs a lot but it will make the power I want and then some.
On the liquid to air cooler. I race my car primarily. I drive it on the street when it is nice out. I will accept the compromise of no ice in the cooler when cruising. it doesnt bother me much.
Im using 1 3/4" primary tubes. I still have standard header pattern on my heads. small port AFR190's at this point in time. spread port sure would make more space for things though. maybe down the road.
I will be using a 4" downpipe. it will be 3 1/2" out of the turbo since any bigger and it wont bolt to the turbine housing.
Im also going to be using an HKS GT wastegate. One single one should do the job.
Im aiming for the high 9 second range at the strip this season. I hope I can get it there!
Im geting ready toget a Dart Little M built so that should be able to hold a lot of boost.
Good luck monty.
