If they are close enough to know that, that particular gauge is a boost gauge then they will see it whatever you put it. If they cant see your boost gauge how will you?

not like that, im talking like somewhere where it's not 100% obvious, i.e. the a-pillar. i was thinking somewhere next to the ac controls or something.

a boost gauge is never obvious unless you were sitting inside the car.... alot of people use apillars.... no one expects a boosted muscle car

I agree that gauges on the a-pillar may raise concers, aftermarket gauges can mean anything from you're too cheap to fix the stock ones to needing the extra room for more gauges. The coolest thing I've seen was someone removed the ashtray lid, got smoked plexiglas and glued it in its place, then had a digital boost gauge. Descreet and very cool.

alright, fine, how about this, i don't want to make my car look gay like every other lame civic/wrx/evo on the road that DOES mount their gauges on the a pillar. by now i can obviously see where this is going with you, so please dont respond unless you have something to say that might benefit me.

yeah, i originally wanted to do the ashtray, but i couldn't really figure out how to mount them at the angle i need. do they make a pod or something.

u can mount them in the cener heat.ac vents,if u remove the vent things, autometer makes a pod that fits in there for the mustangs,so they may make one also for the 3rdgen camaros though im not sure,if they dont u can have a piece made that will mount there that ur gauges can be put into.the only other place ive seen somone to qauges ina 3rdgen other then the pillar or dash pod,is in the place of the radio

If you dont want a gay car then why do you have to put a gauge in an ashtray? I am constructing an acdelete panel for gauges. however there are alot of threads about gauges, and alot of very creative people here on the forums... search is only a click away and so is your gateway to a discrete gauge...

you can hang gauges under the vents in the dash.... build them into the dash, really, theres alot of options besides the usual ***** racer crap.. its just that doing that stuff is easier.

i tried searching (its a hell of a lot easier then making a thread) but the search function must have sand in it's vagina or something. it never has worked well for me.

if you stuck a gauge BEHIND an air vent, do you think it would be visable whe litten up.

do not stick a gauge behind the vent you kidding me?
Take the vent out and make a plate out of plastic or aluminium and drill mini holes around the side so you can still get some use out of it

hey! at least someone's thinking ^^^

i just had the idea of putting it behind because a friend of mine has his shift light behind the vent in his mustang, and it gives it a really clean look.

I don't know about you, but our dash isnt what I would call high strength
Those bolts would rip out of that dash in a heart beat... I am probably going to mount my 5 incher on the corner... I understand the risk

My 2 1/16 boost guage is mounted by the drivers side heater vent closest to the door....I wanted it to be hidden from plain view(as in from the seat of another car the T/A looks COMPLETELY stock).....If I could find my digi I'd post pics. it does look good there. I used a black aluminum single guage holder and mounted it to the underside overhang of the dash right in front of the vent....the wires and the line run into the vent so they cannot be seen as well.

well then we're really screwed. i mean, if the heavy gauge sheetmetal that forms the base of the dash pad isnt strong enough to hold a tach with two bolts thru it.... what about our cars? i mean, the entire unibody is made of a thinner gauge sheetmetal.. and i donno about you, but im now scared about my seat too.. i mean, if two of thoes bolts cant hold down a tach, how can i expect studs the same size to hold down both the seat and my 200lb ***?!

seriously though, as long as he bolted it thru correctly and didnt just screw into the vinyl on top, hes fine.

You have a heavy gauge attached to a dash, which is secured by these riniky dink screws... I have seen a huge chunk come out of these dashes by accidently dropping a ratchet.... im afraid to see a 2g's of impact.
i am guilty of mounting my stuff there...as well.

The tach is held on with velcro and zip ties. No seriously though, the dash was removed when all this stuff was installed by the previous owner(s). I didnt install it but I removed the dash pad myself to see what was going on when I was re-wiring the car (removed the phone charger since it was improperly installed). The tach mounting seems secure enough to me, but if I do get hit in the face with it I'll let you know. I figgure if I get rearended then the tach is the least of my worries. I know alot of people here don't like the guages on the A-pillar but when I install the new dash (4th gen firebird dash) I'm gonna be moving the boost guage to the A-pillar and adding a A/F ratio guage for the WB02 setup. I'm not really concerned what other people do with their cars (be it domestic, european, or japanese) I want those two guages there because they're in the field of view while driving.

There is a simple reason for putting the boost gauge in the field of view.......I know the last thing I would ever do is look down at WOT and 6k RPM to see what my boost gauge was reading.

Mount the gauge between your legs in the chair. That way when you scratch your nuts you can check your boost reading too.

Both of my modded cars have triple gauge pillars, here's my take.
They aren't import-like to me, I see an equal number of them on both sides.

The gauges are close to your view which is nice, but if you are road-racing or even acting like it, when you take hard and fast lefts they end up IN your view and it quickly becomes annoying and dangerous. They are great for drag racing, though. Drag racers: 1 ... Road racers: 0. However, in reality there's only one non-dash gauge that's *usually* needed while at WOT, and that's a boost gauge. A carefully located single pod would cut down on this problem a lot and the other gauges could move somewhere less intrusive.
I wish someone made some pillar replacements that kept the gauges in an even line of sight with the A-pillar, but of course they'd have to protrude further into the cabin that way, though that wouldn't bother me. It may be a fun fiberglass project, I dunno.

Just some (sleepy) thoughts.

If you mount them on your a-pillar how do you run your cage?
