IS THIS BAD...

ok so i have a 91 t/a, l98 with a paxton sn-89 blower on it. the way the breather system works is the left and right valvecover tie together then circulate into the front of the air cleaner.

anyways, so last night i was romping on it quite a bit, and noticed that it was smoking out of the hood a little bit... no big deal, just some oil on the valvecover (my driverside breather doesn't seal too good) so we drive home and all the sudden it starts running REALLY rough at idle, kinda like it has a cam or something, so this morning i take a look at it and don't find any vacume leaks, and i thought i might have fouled a plug, but i still have plenty of power, so i was stumped...

so i pulled of the air cleaner to find a trail where oil had been going through the intake system, supercharger and everything.

so my question is: have i found my problem, could oil going into the intake make my car run rough, am i going to have to tear my motor apart and clean it out or can it just burn off.

please help guys, i don't know what the hell im supposed to do here, so any input would be appreciated. THANKS,

mike

ya it probably just blow-by. around here a few of the turbo guys are running a oil seperator in the line to keep most of the oil out of the intake. you could do the same thing to keep the oil out of the blower.

I'm over at SVT Performance quite a bit and there's really good info on making your own oil separator in this thread:

Make your own Oil Seperator for $21 - SVTPerformance

ok, so im guessing i should put that on the side with the pcv valve and keep an open air breather on my drivers side... right. lol im sure you guys have been in my shoes, i mean, this is the power adder board right.

I haven't seen a whole lot of discussion on this here but a ton with factory supercharged Fords. I plan on doing this on my driver's side PCV on my TT IROC-Z very soon!

I cannot run a breather on my passenger side as this changes a closed system into a partially open system which is illegal on AZ. I run my passenger side valve cover breather to the inlet of my passenger side turbo to keep the smog police happy. I will be installing a second oil separator on this line at the same time I add one to the driver's side.

First, if this just started and it started with it running rough I would suspect that you hurt some thing causing the blowby. First thing I’d do is the choo choo test, pull the oil filler or breather from the valve cover and see if you get any smoke coming from it while the car is idling. If it looks like a steam locomotive then you probably hurt a piston/ring which is causing your blowby.

Well, if you’re doing the choo choo thing then the next thing to do is to run a leakdown test to find exactly where and what you hurt…
