Junkyarding Turbos or superchargers
Im (very) interested in supercharging.. less so in turbos but want some kind of power adder other than nitrous. Im in the process of rebuilding a 350 bored 40 over and want to build it to handle 7 to 11 psi of boost. Im wondering if its possible to find a turbo in a junkyard or even better a supercharger that would give me a good boost.
How hard would it be to make it work?
What kind of turbos should I look for Diesel turbos or others like off tuner cars?
I want something that will fit under the stock hood and im not worried about running it through an intercooler I can add that later if I need.
Would I be better off just getting a supercharger kit that I can run up through my carb.
I have an edelbrock rpm intake and a 1406 600 cfm carb that I will be using. Im going to get the hooker 2055's if I go supercharger and dont know anything aobut turbo exhaust so im more likey to do the super than turbo.
I just dont know where to start. Im not wanting to make 600 hp at the wheels . I have a 700R thats had a few upgrades when it was built and stock rearend.
I have a 2004 grand prix with the supercharger and its awesome when the boost goes up and it takes off. It only has like 4 or 5 psi of boost and its pretty nice.
Just something simple that will give me good power and most importantly reliability I want something that I wont have to mess with just put it together get it tuned and set up and drive.. 100,000 miles or longer with out doing anything but regular stuff.. oil / filter and plugs things like that.
I want something thats fun to drive and easy to take care of. A daily driver with some grunt. I know I could make good power naturally aspirated but I just love that boost putting you in your seat when it kicks in.
So whats the best thing to do for extra grunt and reliability. Cost is an issue. I can order a 383 with 400 hp for 3000 bucks that has a 3 year warranty so I dont want to spend thousands of bucks for something that isnt going to do much. You guys have done millions of different combos so what works for what Im planning on doing?

Anything over 1 year warrenty is overrated IMO. Mainly because anything you change to the engine voids the warrenty. I thought a 3 year 36k mile warrenty for my 350 was awesome. Till I found out all the loopholes in it.

Well a purpose built motor is going to be more reliable than some blower parts fabed together from a junk yard. As far as the turbo goes, Unless you have alot of time and money then don't bother. You will need custom exhaust work like down pipes and dump valves, a blowoff valve, more fuel preasure, custom intake plumbing, custom intercooler, custom cut oil lines, weld fittings into your oil pan, re-jet the carb. Not to mention the endless hours of tuning to eliminate most of that annoying turbo lag!
And for the Supercharger. The best thing for your case is a roots type blower like a 6-71, but now you have hood clearance issues and still need more fuel and re-jet the carb.
I think I would just go for the stroker if it were me in this case. Reliable power and a butt load of torque! 400 hp and I assume the torque is in the 4 neighborhood, thats alot of power for stock suspention and drivetrain. You may also want to think about subframe conectors.

Im doing subframe connectors before its on the road again. I will also be putting on new shocks/springs with some of the thicker 4th gen spring rubbers. Im wanting it taller instead of lower. I dont want to have to worry with what I go over in the road because I want it to look cool and low. I would rather have room under the car. Like I said this is going to be a daily driver. Im interested in something that rides and drives good and not going for an awesome stance.
The warranty on the performance motors is 18 months unlimited miles. Since its a complete motor I wont have to do anything. This is the company and the engine that Im planning on getting. Its a 383 with 400hp like I said and its 2899$. High Performance Engines by Recon - HP Signature Series Recon engines are pretty good I have sold quite a few of them and all the people who have bought them are very happy. Even 2 years later they are still plugging away with no problems even in cars that guys take to the dragstrip every month.
I have a 3 inch fiberglass cowl hood on there now and I guess I could stay with that. I was just really wanting to put the factory hood back on with a supercharger. The cheapest Ive found complete sets that would be in the area of power that im looking for are around 2500-4000 depending on the company. I have the intake and carb and will be putting on 2055 headers with a high flow cat and running 2.75 or 3 inch to the back with some kind of muffler that will sound good.
I will probably in the end go with the 383 I just dont want to pour a ton into a motor I would rather take a good chunk of change and upgrade the suspension and have a machine that can track around the corners like it was on rails.
I just wish I had more money and more time. About 10,000 and I could turn it into the ultimate 3rd gen. Im pretty good with body work and have played around with fiberglass made a few speaker enclosures for my friends that have turned out excellent. I will probably make a custom radio pod and center console for it since my originals are falling apart like many are.
Would love to have a vortech supercharger at about 7 or 8 psi on a 8.1 compression engine. If anyone has one laying around PM and ill give you my addy and you can send it to me... I would pay shipping of course. heh.

ive had an idea in the back of my head. i have a t3 turbo sitting in my garage that i got at a yard for 25$. no slop in it at all and spins nice. but i was thinking of doing a remote turbo set up. i wouldnt have to deal with all of those costly under the hood clearance and exaust manifold issues. but i really know nothing about turbo set ups. i think its got an internal wastgate so i would need a blow off valve. then some sort of fuel ajusting.then putting oil to the turbo issues. then run the boosted air tube back to the engine. check out Squires Turbo Systems - Squires Turbo Systems(tm) - Performance made easy! to see how they do their kits.

Yeah that turbo system is awesome. I will have my truck paid off in january and ill have an extra 500 a month to play with. Im getting a Hayabusa or one of the new suzuki boulevards and working on my T/A.
Im really glad this site is here. Theres tons of people who have tried different things. Someone always knows a better way of doing things that can save those of us less experienced a lot of time and money.
And my actual dream combo is a LS7 Crate motor with a supercharger and about 10 psi... One of the new 6L60E six speed auto trannys (dont have anything against manual trans just like the new autos) with a custom alluminum driveshaft going into a moser 12 bolt with the same gears I have now 3.23 or maybe a little bigger like maybe 3.40 or somewhere around there.
Maybe Ill find a supercharger or turbo kit sitting on my steps one morning from the power fairy... but I aint holdin my breath.
Thx for all the answers guys.

ive been buying parts up to put my remote turbo on. probably gunna get rid of the yard turbo i got and buy the proper sized one....... BUT my dad comes along creates quite the intresting idea. actualy it started when i told him i was gunna put a turbo in my car and he said "why not a supercharger" i told him turbos a bit efficient........ and i cant afford a supercharger. he said hed get me one today.... i thought he was joking. he came home with a good sized box and wam! i saw this supercharger! its not a normal supercharger ether ive never seen one like this its made by mercury and intended for a outboard motor by the looks of it. he was just kinda joking around with this when he brough it home.its small and fits into very small areas ( and i mean small!) and he said it works. im sure it wouldnt work in my car but the thought of it kinda made me laugh. but now i wanna put this thing on somthing!
found a CAD of it on the net. its kinda differnt but thats basicly it.

Sounds like one of those Mercury Verado units. Those Outboard motors are bad @ss. Some of the larger motors in the V-6 catagory that have that supercharger on them would be cool to use on like a V-6 F-body somehow. Talk about having something diffrent then a regular setup LOL
